13 Days of Disney – Shh-it’s a Surprise! - June 2016 PTR - Update 6/4

Day 6: Friday, June 10th – Resort Day/Disney Springs

Welcome to our first sleep in day. As you may remember, I am naturally a night owl, but drag myself out of bed for rope drop at WDW because it’s worth it! I have a feeling the break will be needed by this day because, in addition to the 3 previous park days, we will also have gotten up and around early the previous 2 days for travel. And knowing me, I will have barely slept the last few nights at home due to ridiculous excitement. I expect to be running on fumes at this point.

DH and the kids are typically earlier risers, but I figure they can head down to the pool or walk around the resort area some until I get up. I will most likely be up and dressed by 10:00 or so, at which point we will head to Disney Springs. Advice needed here: should we drive or take the bus? We drove on our first trip, but that was before all of the major construction started. Last year we spent the first night of our trip at Port Orleans Riverside, so we were able to take the boat back and forth (LOVED it!). I’m a bit nervous about driving there due to some of the horror stories I’ve heard, though I’m under the impression it’s better now. I’ve also heard horror stories about incredibly long waits for a bus back and forth. We won’t be in a big hurry, but I don’t relish the thought of waiting an hour for a bus. Still we’ve never ridden on a Disney bus before, so it might be nice to at least say we’ve done it. We always have a car, so we’ve always driven everywhere (except the walk to MK from BLT and the boat to DTD).

One thing is for certain – we will be eating here:

earl-of-sandwich-00.jpg

So yummy! Is it bad that I can get excited about a fast food sandwich when I’m like 1,100 miles and two months away from eating it? Maybe I need to get out more.

We have spent evenings at DTD on both of our previous trips. I love the atmosphere of DTD at night, so I am a little sad about only being there in the daytime, but I’ll get over it. I’m hoping that it will be less crowded in the middle of the day than what we’ve experienced in the evenings. Regardless, we will hit our favorite Marketplace stores - basically all the ones that scream Disney and/or feature candy and toys.

We have a bit of a tradition in our family (if twice counts as a tradition). We like to hit DTD on our first night and pick out ear hats for the trip. I'm torn between getting our new ear hats earlier in the trip, but not getting them from World of Disney, or getting them at WoD, but having to wait this long into the trip to get them. We thought about trying to go to DTD on our first night, but we would be kind of rushed and I know the kids will likely want to hang around the resort. Going on this day makes much more sense.

Anyway, we will probably stay there until mid-afternoon or just whenever we decide we’ve had it. At that point, we’ll head back to BCV and spend the rest of the afternoon/evening enjoying Stormalong Bay and the Beach Club activities. Maybe s’mores on the beach? For any that have done them, how are the beach activities? We have a dinner reservation for Beaches and Cream, but I’m not sure if we’ll keep it. This may be a night we take advantage of having the kitchenette and just grab dinner in the room.

We will ideally get to bed early this night in order to be ready for another RD the next day. Any guesses as to which park we’ll be hitting? ;)

I would drive. Since you are going in the morning, it shouldn't be bad. We went on Monday and Wednesday nights during our Spring Break trip. We found parking in the orange garage easily. It wasn't empty, but the signs indicating which aisles had spots worked well. The orange garage is a bit of a walk from the Marketplace, but it's not bad. Plus, you get to see a lot walking over.

I wish I could throw in a rest day...but I just can't. I can't be that close and NOT go to a park. Maybe if we had a longer trip or maybe if we went more often. Of course, I may be forced into one once I see how my 2 under 5 react! In any case, enjoy it!

I'm not much help. Haven't been since 2012. And we are at SSR so we will boat it over, I'm sure. I am reading a TR from someone who went in October and she said it was a mess. However, its probably different by now??

We ate here last trip. I really enjoyed it. We are doing T-Rex this time, for the boys.

I want to say we did daytime maybe on arrival day last trip bc I think we had lunch at EoS but then I know we were there one night too. So, I'm probably not remembering correctly. We are doing evening this trip but I'm sure it will be fine either way!

We have a bit of a tradition in our family (if twice counts as a tradition). We like to hit DTD on our first night and pick out ear hats for the trip. Hmmm...I'm not sure. I'd probably just wait til this day to get the ears. Since MK is our first (arrival) day park, we'll probably just get some there.

No idea on beach activities but if you participate, I'll be paying attention. Research purposes.... :)

Well, since you haven't gone yet and I'm pretty sure you'll be ready by this point...Magic Kingdom!! Captain Obvious here, right? ;)

Just finding and reading through your PTR tonight. Looks like a fun trip, and your kids are such cuties!!! We will be in the World at the same time as you, though not for as long. Our trip is June 4th-13th. I also figured out we live nearby! Not sure what part of the Metroplex you are in, but we live up in Frisco.

Do you guys ever make it up here to Dallas for the State Fair? Up until a couple of years ago, we had a Birds of the World show as an annual part of the fair. The show is no longer being done, but a smaller scale version has been installed at the Dallas Zoo. I'm pretty sure these shows are put on by the same company as the group who does Flights of Wonder. We love seeing these shows and, from what I've read, the AK one is very similar in structure to our fair show. It would be nice to be able to see it again and feel like it was a piece of home in WDW (even though the company that does the shows is actually based in Orlando!).

DH and I grew up in Plano and Dallas, respectively, so we have been to the fair, but not lately. I don't remember seeing it at the fair though. It's similar to a show that I have seen at Scarborough Faire in Waxahachie, but FOW is longer and better and has more birds.

^^^This!!! We've only been to AK on 2 out of our 4 family trips and have never done FoW. This is exactly what I was figuring it to be like. I've gone to the State Fair every year of my life, and we used to see that bird show all the time. And then when it opened at the Dallas Zoo, we saw it there. We may have to make time to see it, as it would be just like you said, a little piece of home.

Thanks for the info! It's nice to hear from someone who has actually experienced the garage. I looks as if they've just now installed one of the bus time monitors at Beach Club, so we may just peek at it to see when the next bus is expected and then head to the car if there is much of a wait.

I have felt the same way every time in the past! We are forced to take rest days this time because the trip is so long and we can't get a pass with more than 10 days without an AP. I'm still filling the down days up with activities, so I don't know how restful they'll be beyond sleeping in a bit. I may end up kicking myself if we burn out.

No idea on beach activities but if you participate, I'll be paying attention. Research purposes.... :)

I will definitely report back if we do! I imagine we will at some point.

Hello neighbor! We're actually in Richardson, so just down the highway. It always surprises me how many people around here don't make it to the fair. It's an annual tradition for us. I need my Fletcher's Corny Dog! We saw the bird show every time too, and during the last year I remember the main guy saying that we would still be able to see their bird shows were we ever to go to AK at WDW. I think I am now planning to drop the Kali River Rapids fast pass in favor of one for Rivers of Light if it happens to be open during our trip. If I did that, we could likely see FoW with the time slot I had originally reserved for Kali. Thanks for reading!

I really hope they have one at SSR when we go. How did you find out they had one at Beach Club?

I suppose I didn't really know that about the limit on passes. Interesting. But I can see the value in doing other activities if you have that long to spend.

Hmmm...now am I right?? 8-)

I found out about the Beach Club bus board by following the YC & BC info thread over on the Resorts board. Apparently it is a pretty new addition. Seems like it would be really helpful.

...and I'm not telling yet if you're right. ;) Wait, that's annoying isn't it? Ok, it's NOT MK! Crazy, eh? I'll explain in the next update.

AK is our least favorite park, too. It is so dang hot there! I'd keep the Tusker House ressie. We ate there once and loved it. I think your plan for the day looks great. I wish we knew more about ROL. It sure makes planning hard.

Personally, I'd drive to Disney Springs. I think taking the bus there is horrible. DS isn't an every trip visit for us because I seriously can't stand having to ride the bus to/from there. Yay for Earl of Sandwich! Love it there!

I asked on the SSR thread awhile back but they weren't really sure. I guess it had been awhile since those replying had been, and they did not have it then. I'll have to ask again closer to the trip.

Now I'm intrigued!

A (not-so) Minor Set-back

I am a klutz. Like, big time. Especially when it comes to my feet. I’ve sprained my ankles a bunch and broken more toes than I can count, but usually, my injuries are things that I can recover from independently and fairly quickly. Sometimes, however, I deal with more extensive damage. I have had 3rd degree burns over much of my foot due to boiling oil falling on it; I’ve broken my foot at the place where the tendon meets the bone (just by twisting it while walking up a ramp); I’ve been spiked with the toe pick of my daughter’s ice skates. And so on…

Well, I currently have another major issue. This time, I have the tip of a sewing needle stuck in the bone inside my big toe. The injury happened way back in February, but I just found out about the needle tip still being present last week. So now I have to have surgery next week in order to have it removed. My first thought? “How will this impact my Disney trip???” That is seriously the biggest concern I have had throughout this entire ordeal. Says a lot about my priorities, doesn’t it? Anyway, according to the doc I should be fully recovered within 2-3 weeks of the surgery, which gives me a couple week cushion before the trip, but I am slightly freaking out.

Oh man. I hope it doesn't affect your trip:goodvibes Can you postpone the surgery until after your trip?

I left a sewing needle with thread out once, and my cat, at the time, swallowed it. Poor guy had to have surgery to remove it, because it got to the end but he couldn't pass it:( I am so paranoid about leaving those out now.

Wow, you've really had bad luck with your lower extremities!!! I hope the surgery goes ok and your recovery time is fast!

I admit, this is definitely a big fear of mine, as our trip gets closer and closer, that someone will get sick or hurt. And when I say someone, I'm really thinking about my 3 kids here. We leave the day after school is out, so they will be exposed to all those fun school germs right until we leave. Yikes!!!

Oh no! Well I'm glad you found it now so you'll get that time cushion! The last 2 trips, we have needed an ECV! First for my mom (knees), then my dad (blood clot), and this time for my mom (knees again). Hopefully that's it for you guys...no more set backs!

Your poor cat! That sounds awful. I wish I could postpone until after the trip, but I won't be able to do the walking during the trip if the thing is still in there! Just terrible luck.

Sending good health vibes your way! The school germs terrify me.

Ouch!!! Hopefully you'll make a full recovery quickly and your trip will be unaffected.

Thank you!

I hope that as well! I desperately do not want to have to use an ECV, but will if it comes to that. If I do, I may consult you for tips on navigating the parks with one.

Plans are moving along. I bought some sand toys for the kids to play with at Stormalong Bay, some travel size toiletries, and Disney Kleenex, which has become a bit of a trip tradition. I'm still in limbo regarding my foot, but am trying to make the best of it. No matter what happens, we're going to Disney (can't cancel now!). It's possible for me to be back to normal by the time of the trip, but if not, we'll just take it more slowly. Fortunately we have lots of time, so we should be able to do a lot even if we take it in smaller/slower chunks, and we know we will always be back! Can you tell I'm trying to talk myself into optimism? I tend to be a go-go-go kind of tourer, so slowing down doesn't sound great. However, I know we will have a magical time regardless, and are lucky to be able to go in the first place, and I just keep trying to remind myself of that.

Day 7: Saturday, June 11th – Disney’s Hollywood Studios

That’s right, we’re going back to DHS! Likely the main thought at this moment is “where is MK on this schedule???” I promise there is a method to my madness. We decided to visit parks based on location, since we’ll be at BCV for the first half of our trip and BLT for the last half. That means that we’re planning to hit Epcot, AK, and DHS only during the first week, and have heavily loaded MK into the back half. I honestly don’t know how I will cope with this. DH and the kids all say they would be fine with this set-up, and actually prefer it. I don’t know how I will stand being in WDW for a week and not even seeing MK in that time. Then after not seeing it for the entire first week, we will spend 4 out of 5 park days there during the second week. I’m not so much worried about burning out on MK, as we can always find things to do there, but it just feels a little weird.

On the other hand, I’ve heard that doing an extended split stay can feel like beginning a second vacation when transferring resorts. When we come up World Drive and see the Contemporary, and later the castle, looming on the horizon, it takes my breath away. Like literally, every time we drove up for the entire week on our last trip I got goosebumps. I love that area so so much. It might be nice to be able to spend the first week enjoying the rest of WDW, then to completely immerse ourselves in the MK area for the second week. I will be interested in your feedback as you see what I’ve got planned over the course of that time.

Now for the DHS plans. I know many view this as a half-day park, but we are those weirdos who love it. We will show up early and get signed up for Jedi Training Academy. Oh my kids love this so much. DD has now done it twice and DS did it for the first time on our last trip. They are Star Wars nuts.

Going to see The Force Awakens at the first showing on opening night.

We are hoping to get an early afternoon show. If Jedi sign-ups don’t take too long, we plan to run over to RnRC to let DH ride and get a rider swap pass for me to use later. The rest of the day will be spent doing the following:

Tower of Terror (FP+)
Beauty and the Beast show
Toy Story Mania (FP+)
Star Tours (FP+)
Jedi Training
Launch Bay
Olaf character meet (assuming it’s open)
(maybe) Little Mermaid show

Evening plans are still up in the air. I’m hoping they will extend Club Villain into June. If they do, I’m thinking of booking it as a birthday/anniversary surprise for DH. We’d do one of the babysitting services for the kids, then head back to the park to do CV without them. Also, I could use my rider swap pass for RnRC at that time and DH would actually be able to ride with me! We have never gotten to ride anything alone before.

The last issue is that of Star Wars fireworks. Will they be happening at this time? Who knows, but rumors seem to be yes. If that’s the case, then we may try to catch them on 6/7 after Fantasmic! if we can make it back to the area in time. If not, we’ll see them this night. It would be annoying with the CV event though, because we’d have to go get the kids, then come back to the park and find a spot for the fireworks. If they’re not happening or if we got to see them on 6/7, we could just head back after CV and make it an earlier night. The other option is to scrap CV entirely and instead do the Star Wars Dessert party (assuming it’s extended) with the whole family. Decisions decisions, almost exclusively based on hypothetical and/or rumored information… Which would you go for, assuming CV and the dessert party both end up being viable options?

So a lot of what-if’s for this day! I don’t like the uncertainty, but I know it comes with the territory when planning a WDW trip. 46 days to go!

We tend to really mix days around. Since I like to do AM EMH, that's usually the park we go to. We spent a full day and half at DHS and still didn't get to do everything we wanted. We didn't do most of the shows either.

CV vs dessert party. That's a hard one. My gut says that the dessert party will be around, maybe not when you are there, but for the foreseeable future; whereas, I am not sure if Club Villain will stay. My gut is known to be finicky, picky, and sometimes downright honrey, so I don't know if I would trust it;) The dessert party is something that the whole family can enjoy. I know we liked it. I would like to do Club Villain though. The reason that I think the dessert party will stay is that it makes money for Disney. Star Wars is only going to expand in that park, and I think the new fireworks show will be a fairly permanent thing.

Have you had the surgery yet? I hope it heals quickly. Sometimes, taking it slow at Disney isn't necessarily bad. You get to see things that you normally wouldn't see.

Great plan! We are actually scheduled for a day and a half at DHS. Mostly because we like the shows so I had to throw two of them to another day and since we are there lets do TSMM, ToT, and ST again! LOL. If the Olaf M&G materializes, we'll probably add it to our short day and maybe take something off b/c our full DHS day is packed to the max!

I so want to do Club Villain. I'm hoping its there in June 2017. Because I'm planning a date night in Disney for the hubs and me. We'd do a kids' club as well.

Makes sense on the park plans but you have stronger resolve than me. Our Mk arrival day is a least recommended type day but we are doing it anyway. LOL

Good luck with the foot surgery!

Oh and I'm assuming you've heard about the AK extended hours. They have *some* late night FP loaded into the system but not all of them yet. FYI.

Good point on the dessert party! Greater likelihood that it will be around for us to do next year. I will have to think on it some more. I appreciate your gut. ;)

The actually couldn't fit me in for surgery until May 12th! Just got scheduled today. It was supposed to be next week. Now I am super worried, but the doctor assures me the recovery time should be about 2 weeks. I will be 3.5 weeks out from leaving, so fingers crossed all goes according to plan. That slow trip is sounding more likely though, at least for the first week.

We aren't doing hoppers, otherwise I would have mixed things around and done some half days. And we'll see how much resolve I end up having...you may find me at a ticket window adding hoppers and catching the monorail over some time during the first week. ;) Of course, my messed up foot may slow me down and keep me in place.

I saw the AK hours extension! Now I'm thinking about pushing our fastpasses back to later times and actually going back to the resort in the middle of the day so we can come back and catch the Jungle Book show.

I'm currently stalking for later night FP...so far only Dinosaur and Tough...Bug are available til close. I did get to change my EE from 7-8 to 7:30-8:30 but that was the latest showing. I want to change my daytime safari FP to the nighttime one and just the daytime one standby (we have it at rope drop so that should be fine).

People are posting on the Rumors of Light thread about the FP availability so check it out!
