Hotel breakfast changes

]

I think the breakfast at DLH is lovely. We've stayed a good few times and always enjoyed it. But we've often done it at the end of EMH rather than early morning, I think that way it is great value and works well with the day. I would not, however, pay £23 pp for it. Perhaps if they added characters - but it certainly wouldn't be an every day occurrence!

I like the idea of Plaza Gardens too and was positive when it was first rumoured this would happen. They've wanted to move away from the Village for a while so that you need park entry to enjoy the priviledges. We've vetoed Cafe Mickey for a few years now - it's just awful!

I was talking earlier about our May trip - my initial gut feeling was to book now for the breakfast (we are still looking at the DLH). However, now I've had time to reflect I'm thinking differently. We have 4 mornings. We may pay for breakfast at DLH one morning (we'll see what reports say), we will probably do a Plaza Gardens breakfast too. I am a shareholder so can use Salon Mickey the other two mornings - so that's us done then! I'd be looking to do the DLH and PG breakfasts as late as possible though in order to treat them as more of a brunch! I need good value at those prices!

I think the thing that annoys me about it the most is the fact they are removing a major perk of the holiday, without removing any part of the associated cost!

Still think I'll hang on for a French/German etc offer before booking after all.... rather than booking on the current UK/Ireland booking.

PS - Dav I think you are spot on about the pricing. That is exactly how it will be - those staying at the higher category hotels pay more. Is it fair? Nope, just because someone saves to stay in the DLH/HNY does that mean they should pay more for the same thing - I think not! You could argue the bar drinks are like that already, more expensive in higher end hotels - however, you could also argue that's not 100% correct as when you buy a drink in Cafe Fantasia, you are paying more for the experience of being in there too. It's a bit different with the breakfast as everyone will be together, in the same place. Unless they are going to cordon off areas for different hotels lol!! That would be fun!

Fortunately the breakfast offerings are not the same depending on your hotel! Cheyenne and Santa Fe are the worst, poorer quality. Disneyland Hotel in the Castle Club is the best, though no match for a real French breakfast in a 5* (even 4*) hotel.

This explains the difference in the price structure, and give you choice and flexibility as you can go upscale and have your breakfast in the DLH even if you're not sleeping there, for a small additional fee.

When I would go in April 2017 (and i am thinking about that time) it would mean for us:

3 adults and 1 child = breakfast per day at the NBC = 75 GBP = 87,- Euro per day

We will stay 6 nights = 6 x 87,- € = 522,- € only for breakfast

I guess I will look after a Compass Club room now, because it would costs the same with better breakfast & specials.

:confused3

Would you not consider other options for breakfast? Such as going to the Coffee Grinder and enjoy a nice seating on Main Street? Or maybe a Starbucks one morning to change?

I may repeat myself but as far as I am concerned, paying breakfast means freedom and more choices, not the other way around.

So if someone booked already for next summer would that effect their reservation?
I believe you're safe if you already have a reservation. Regulations are strict regarding what an hotel can change after a reservation has been made, and DLP knows the rules.

The thing is, the coffee grinder and market Street deli are tiny. Even if say 50% of hotel guests decide not to have a hotel breakfast with the changes that would mean crazy queues at the other places. They really need to open up more places in the park for breakfast (cafe hyperion is huge so could be a good shout) and make sure McDonald's, Starbucks and Earl open earlier because at the moment they don't open til at least 9am.

At the end of the day the prices they're proposing are just a rip off. Even if they are bringing the policy into line with the US parks think about what you can get for $16, which is what they're charging for a basic continental breakfast at the Cheyenne and Santa fe.

Sorry, I don't understand your point. What I don't get is the difference in price structure when we are discussing the pricing of a comparable breakfast i.e. at Plaza Gardens. Why should those staying in the DLH or HNY pay more for the same thing than someone staying at say Santa Fe? The on-site breakfast is a different matter as it's a different offering. Surely the PG breakfast should be a certain price and every onsite hotel guest should pay that price?

That's disappointing! It's always been really beneficial price-wise that the breakfast is included. We probably would only stay club level now any way due to this but still...

Yes Petit_Rose but the problem seems to be that Club level (SQL and NPB) seem to be on 'deals' less and less these days. So in effect, they are very expensive - more than we've been used to paying in the past for Club level as we've been able to take advantage of offers before! I know Castle Club is never included in offers, I wonder if other Club levels are going this way too.

The whole situation is very disappointing, I feel like there should be a discount procedure since we can travel form the UK straight into DLP (kind of like a Florida resident discount), it irritates me that you can get better deals on the French and German sites (I'm not fluent enough to be confident to book though them). Some level of transparency is needed as prices have been going up exponentially the last few years.

It is disappointing - I just hope that the usual price rise we see on room rates doesn't sky rocket next year with it being the anniversary. Maybe this is their way of trying to encourage more people to purchase half board, assuming breakfast will be included with it.

Re booking using another site: The form is identical to the UK version and I use google translate or have two browsers open so i can see the UK version as i'm filling it in. It's actually pretty straightforward, so don't let that put you off :goodvibes

Thanks for that - might have to be brave and try that the next time we book, unfortunately we already have our trip for next year booked.

I'm finding the prices pretty steep Julie. But it's just come to me that it may be because I will be paying for both girls next year (unless I can get an under 12 offer where one of them will go free). So, that's perhaps why I am thinking it has gone up significantly. We were initially looking to get APs and go twice (once in May, and once in summer), but DH wasn't keen and then with the breakfast announcement, I don't think we'll do a second trip, so it's pointless getting APs!

I've read that a few people were saying they were paying around £100-£150 more next year than previous trips. And that's based on the current early booking 2 nights free offer.

I agree. Prices are higher for us too now that ds is 12, so it's 4 or 5 adults if eldest ds is coming. I noticed some good prices on Expedia for room only which is why I started to think about getting Ap's. Even if we don't go again (which we will) total cost of our upcoming trip is much cheaper than we've paid before on a package. AP gave is 55% discount on the room only rate and I know that will all change next year and is never guaranteed, but with the likes of expedia and other operators now doing room only I'm hopeful of getting a deal for next summer too.

Breakfast is a nice to have but not a deal breaker for us. DH eats very little at breakfast, usually cereal and toast and the kids vary. We'd all be just as happy with something from Salon Mickey or McD's if it came to it. You are right about DLH though, for the significant rise in room prices there I think breakfast should be included as standard.

Looking at it there may not be an option to choose to just do the breakfast for some of the days as if they sell breakfast as a meal plan the way the pricing suggests it will probably have to be bought for length of stay the same as other meal plans.

As for the character breakfast the price shown at the moment is only up to 27th March - there is nothing to indicate how it will be priced after that so may be just one price for all whether staying onsite or not. There maybe a surcharge for those who already have the breakfast meal plan in which case yes it will be a higher price for those in the higher end hotels but thats the same now if you have a breakfast at cafe mickey. The price you pay for the hotel room includes breakfast but when they have priced the rooms they will have included an amount to cover the breakfast which will be a higher amount for those hotels offering hot items

I had never contemplated CM for breakfast as I just saw it inferior to the DLH offering, and as stated above, it's in completely the wrong direction. But, I'm fairly sure you can't 'upgrade' to CM for breakfast if staying in the DLH? I know you couldn't have breakfast in the park when that was an option for some hotels.

Perhaps you are right SW, it may change when the breakfast thing comes into play after March. I may be missing something but I still don't get the point about the breakfast being more expensive for DLH visitors. Surely you'll be able to book breakfast in Plaza Gardens and pay outwith, rather than having to have a meal plan in your hotel? I guess it's a wait and see. But I think it's wrong that DLH/HNY etc visitors pay more for exactly the same thing. As I said earlier, it's not like a drink, where it's in different surroundings, so you opt to pay more (or not), it's directly comparable and the same, so it should be the same price for all guests. I wouldn't pay for breakfast at the DLH every day at those prices - £88 for breakfast for the 4 of us! Yikes - I'd want an egg from the golden goose for that lol!

You know Julie. I hadn't thought about the room only option. I am just someone who likes things tied up well in advance, where possible and I know sometimes room only isn't out until late on. Also, I do like the safety net of booking direct as they are so good at changing/amending if need be. I also forgot about Shareholder discount but tbh that never seems to equate to much does it!

I got room only (includes breakfast) with Disney direct and booked a few days ago for our trip in 3 weeks time. I'm a planner too but got the APs with the attitude that I'd go anywhere on site if it came to it. I fully expect the AP rate to rise next year however the fact that Disney now advertise that a room only rate is available on their website suggests that it might be wrapped in with their new pricing in future, so not as hard to find as it used to be.

I think we've saved a packet with shareholders discount over the years in terms of meals and purchases. So glad I'm still a member :) also got a reasonable quote for room only too.

I've never seen room only prices on their website? Where do I find those? I thought you had to call up for them. I think I might find the time this week to call up. It still looks like it's cheaper for us to do 1 adult in each room (we need 2 rooms) and then get an AP for 2 adults and a child. But there are only terrace rooms left on the current offer at DLH and I'm not keen on spending the extra for those. You've spurred me on to call up and ask about various rates. I am happy to do GF at SQL but Mum wants to stay at DLH!

I think APs will shoot up next price increase - is it November? Supertrips have reasonable prices for Fantasy AP atm but the problem is I can't buy yet - end December/early Jan before I can buy as I can't activate before end May!

I hadn't contemplated a half board discount package as I was planning to use my SH card. But just not sure now whether to hold out for that instead!

The prices aren't on the website, you do have to call - but the very fact that they even advertise that you can get room only is something new.

If you're going to always stay on site then you'd be better off getting Classic passes and ordering via post before you go - we've just done this and it was so easy (see AP by post thread) and much cheaper - if you get 5 you'll get 20% discount plus 15% shareholder discount. We got 5 passes for just under £400. Staying on site means you'll still get EMH and no block out days. To give you an idea of prices, 2 nights this October was £277 for HNY and £546 for DLH. Obviously this will change next year - but i'm going to risk it anyway as the package prices are just getting out of hand. At least I'll only have the room rate to try and secure nearer the time.
