The Running Thread - 2016

Watched and enjoyed. Interesting that in both races, the winner didn't really celebrate until the finish. 2nd place was celebrating the whole way during the home stretch. 3rd were both in great pain and struggling.

Just one so far... the small ~100 person race I did for my long run that I mentioned in a previous post where I felt bad that the volunteers were all still out there waiting for me (and I guess the other 4 people behind me) was managed by them, but not one of their main events... the Cochecho Challenge. Most of their other races are are not in the Seacoast and I haven't really gone west or north for races. Maybe this year though! The NH 10 Miler or the New England Half Marathon are possibilities. :)

I have to admit I haven't heard of the Cochecho Challenge. I'll check it out. I'm eying the New Englang Half later this year. Not very far from me, great swag, good price, and.....it has a net loss for elevation!

I loved watching this live. Not too many times you can watch races live! I hope they continue this trend. I was so happy Meb is heading to Rio, but sad Kara isn't (although her 4th place finish leaves her as an alternate).

We watched the Olympic trials from start to finish.
Thought everyone performed well despite the heat.
Great that two women leaders stuck together as long as possible, great teamwork.
It's amazing how fast they run the entire time.

If anyone watched the very beginning, the mayor of LA is really young!!!

Did not watch the trials - too busy with my family today. Went to a great murder mystery dinner with friends tonight.

I don't know if they're doing it this year. The website hasn't been updated since before last year's race. It was an ok race, nothing super special... the only reason I did it was that it was in my town and running a big portion of the route I was going to already be doing my long run. :)

I'll definitely have to look more into the New England Half, though... I like net elevation loss! :)

I was too busy to watch the trials yesterday. I'm bummed for Dathan Ritzenhein, he's from my hometown of Rockford. I've actually seen him running around town a couple of times and thought how cool that an elite marathoner is training on the same paved trail as me!

QOTD: What are you doing to celebrate Valentine's Day?

ATTQOTD: Not a whole bunch, but cooked a pork tinder loin stuffed with bacon and local strawberries. Made a strawberry glaze for it as well. Dessert was a Port Hudson pie. Making breakfast this morning. So a lot of time hanging out and cooking.
Hope everyone enjoys the remainder of the weekend.

How did you like the Honey Stinger Waffle? That was one of the first fuels I tried. Liked the taste but really disliked the dryness and chewiness as I was running. I love the Honey Stinger gummies, though, especially cherry cola and limeade.

I'm on the same page as you on the texture. I don't think these will work for me mid-run, but I like them enough for a pre-run or post -run snack. I'm still a baby about anything non-liquid during a run. But those gummies sound good.

Hubby and I went to the Lil Goat Diner and then the Chicago Blackhawks game. That's our kind of romance.

…and it would have been his fourth Olympics. I was rooting for him.

10 mile run and skiing in northern Michigan. Well, snowboarding for me and skiing for the rest of my family.

QOTD: What are you doing to celebrate Valentine's Day?

My family was at a dance competition until pretty late last night so my wife and I agreed to a mellow day today. We went out to brunch and will spend some time this afternoon planning games with the girls. I have a 12 mile run this evening. Not very romantic I suppose, but a good day.

To yesterday's QOTD: I am embarrassed to say I did not even know the trials were happening. I completely missed that. However, cheering on my girl's at their competition was awesome and the studio's major routine won best performance of the competition. It was a great day!

Yesterday's QOTD: Did not watch the Trials but was keeping an eye on the results.

Today's QOTD: Not doing anything special for Valentine's... it was -9F this morning when we got up with windchill of -35F (even colder overnight!). But SO and I went to walk dogs at the animal shelter at 11:30 when it was all the way up to 5F (but still with windchill), and then I am going to yoga later this afternoon. :)

ATTQOTD: Not much planned with the family. Race this morning:

Race Report: Houston Rhythm and Blues Qtr marathon.

This is a little bit of a different race for Houston. The 5k actually starts about 30 minutes before the Qtr and half marathon and start a little further down the course from the start of the other two. Most races in Houston that start downtown all seem to use Allen Parkway and Memorial, and this one is no different. A nice out and back (2 laps for the half). Since I had the Katy half last weekend, I signed up for the Qtr this year (last year I did half for both, and payed the price the 2nd lap). It was a pleasant warmish 60 degrees at the start.

I ended up having a great race and my pace ended up being better then planned.

1 - 7:21
2 - 7:13
3 - 7:12
4 - 7:07
5 - 7:12
6 - 7:22
.6 - 7:18

Finished at 47:52, and shocked myself with a 1st in my age group and 10th overall for the Qtr marathon. Also, since it was the first Qtr for me, a nice PR.

Congrats on the 1st place! That's very exciting!!

Checking in to update my race today, didn't hit my goal of a sub 2 hour half, but I PR'ed again,2:06:49 so I'm happy. My cold never got bad over the week so I was healthy for the race but a lot of things weren't ideal, got little sleep last night, that definitely slowed down my pace at the end of the race. Also running next to the beach between miles 3-7 we were getting some strong headwinds along with starting near the back of the pack I had a lot of dodging in and out the first couple of miles which were pretty crowded.overall very positive race,PR with knowing theres room for improvement and a great post race with burgers, beer, tacos, muscle milk, chocolate mill and the usual fruits, bagels and muffins,Nice medal too!!

Thanks! My only other 1st in age group was a tiny 10k where there were 11 others in my group. There were at least 43 in the group today, so I am still pretty stoked! There were just over 1000 in the Qtr, and just under 900 in the half, and around 800 for the 5k.
