The Genessee River flows south to north (there are only a few others in the world that do).
New York State was the first state to have license plates on cars.

Guess I learned wrong on the college tour many years ago then. There are more than a few, but they are definitely the minority.

That's only a short list. Heck - the San Joaquin River flows north.

Lots of things have been mentioned about NJ but one of my faves happens to be:

Pork roll.

A pork roll, egg and cheese on an everything bagel is pure heaven.

Taylor Ham gal here :)

Pork roll is popular in Delaware too. I know it's a New Jersey product, Trenton to be precise.

I don't think it can legally be called Taylor Ham, but in popular usage it's very common. It's even printed as such on diner menus.

Regional processed swine products:
Pork Roll :worship:

Scrapple :crazy2:

I don't touch scrapple.

And since we are the diner capital, especially 24 hours diners, 3 am stops to the local diner after a night at the bar/club for an omelete and homefries with some processed swine is the norm.

Michigan is second only to Florida in miles of coastland. Nearby Chelsea MI is the home of Jiffy Mix, run by former Indy Car driver Howdy Holmes.

Do you know how this was this determined? I assume it includes the Great Lakes in addition to the Pacific, Atlantic, Gulf of Mexico, and associated tidal inlets. Even so, Florida is actually always second to Alaska, which has WAY more coastline, and there are other states ahead of Michigan (according to NOAA measurements).

Forgot to sdd that it was for the contiguous states.

Lake of The Ozarks (Missouri) likes to brag about having more shoreline than California. My response is usually an eyeroll.

A couple more North Carolina ones:

NCSSM was the first public residential high school for gifted students. It's located in Durham in what used to be Watts Hospital.
North Carolina has a state folk dance (clogging) and a state popular dance (shagging).

That's a pretty common "enhancement" penalty in lots of states. In California there can be an add-on penalty for wearing a "body vest" in the commission of a felony, but the law doesn't go into effect until next year.

http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/cgi-bin/displaycode?section=pen&group=12001-13000&file=12001-12022.95

12022.2. (b) Any person who wears a body vest in the commission or
attempted commission of a violent offense, as defined in Section
29905, shall, upon conviction of that felony or attempted felony, in
addition and consecutive to the punishment prescribed for the felony
or attempted felony of which he or she has been convicted, be
punished by an additional term of one, two, or five years. The court
shall order the middle term unless there are circumstances in
aggravation or mitigation. The court shall state the reasons for its
enhancement choice on the record at the time of the sentence.
(c) As used in this section, "body vest" means any
bullet-resistant material intended to provide ballistic and trauma
protection for the wearer.
(d) This section shall become operative on January 1, 2017.
Virginia is funny about them too. Had to show credentials to get one.

We grew up in North Jersey and yes, it's Taylor Ham on the diner menus. Moved to South Jersey and ordered Taylor Ham and they looked at us like we had 2 heads but brought us ham steak! LOL. We didn't know what scrapple was and tried that....blech. No way in heck will that ever touch our lips again.

Mobile, Al is the birthplace Mardi Gras.

Plaquemines Parish claims that.

First Mardi Gras in the New World

Another interesting fact that many are unaware of is that Plaquemines Parish serves as the home to the very first Mardi Gras in the United States. In 1699, Pierre Le Moyne d’Iberville settled about sixty miles below what is now New Orleans. This was on March 3, the date of Mardi Gras in France, so Iberville named the spot Point du Mardi Gras and called the small tributary nearby Bayou Mardi Gras in honor of the holiday. This initial point of landing is located in what is now Plaquemines Parish.

Philadelphia is considered one of the most "haunted" cities in America and has one of the highest density of haunted houses
Just curious where the local favorite place is for a Philly Cheesesteak?

Generally we have a yearly trek to Geno's - last summer we passed through at 4am in the pouring rain, lol. We had to laugh about the number of taxi cabs pulling up with people jumping out to get a sandwich, then jumping back in with their food!

Would love to hear more about the favorite haunted houses too. To me, Philadelphia and Boston feel a lot alike.
