More people driving due to low fuel prices?

I am wondering if we are the only ones that have decided to drive due to really low fuel prices. We could save over $1000 if we drive compared to flying. We always rent a car when we are at WDW also, so we won't have to do that. Anyone else driving just to save some $$$?

Out of curiosity, how far a drive is this for you? Does driving result in fewer days at the parks for a particular vacation?

My husband and I are both government workers and get a lot of vacation time, so no it won't take away from vacation time. We will just leave earlier then we would have. We are coming from NJ, so its around 17 hour drive. We are taking our time and stopping along the way to sightsee. So far our destinations are Richmond, VA, Savannah, GA and maybe Cape Canaveral before we arrive for a 10 day WDW vacation. We will be gone for a total of 18 days.

$ 1000 in your pocket is better than in someone else 's pocket.

Your own car is a suitcase ......... Bring your own food .... bring home Florida goodies .

We are driving from Canada and it's close 18 hr driving time for us. With our dollar being so low it's way cheaper for us to fly and with the car we have it will be around 100/150 for us to drive in gas. Airmiles for a hotel one night down and paying for one hotel on the way home and packin food to eat..it will cost us very little. American gas Is so much cheaper then canadian gas so it's a no brained for us.

I am assuming i's 28 hours to drive? We are in NJ and it takes 17 hours for us to drive and I know we are further then 1hr. from Canada:rotfl:

Windsor, Ontario is about 16-1/2 hours (non-stop) from Orlando. It pretty close to the same distance as it is to drive from Newark to Orlando.

Yes, that is the case for us. We drove to Cape Canaveral for our Disney cruise two months ago and we saved a ton! It is about a 16 hour drive for us (from PA) and I was dreading it, but it really wasn't that bad. We are driving to Disney this summer again. We decided if we could get cheap airfare we'd fly, but I can't find anything for under $1000 for four people. Again, we'll save a ton driving.

I will look on a map because I cannot even fathom that. It's so much north, how could it take around the same time? Very weird. Will go get my son's globe. lol

Better yet, use Google maps. The PPs are correct. Some Southern Ontario cities are actually further south than most of NY state. And the interstates that we use bypass all of the larger cities along I 95, resulting in much faster travel times.

I'm sure a lot of people who live within a reasonable distance may opt to drive instead of fly. But many people don't have the luxury of adding 2 or more extra days onto their vacation time just for travel. Or conversely, don't want to shorten their time on site by the extra time that driving would require. Since we are retired, we look on the drive more as a road trip rather than just a point to point transit, and can afford the extra time easily. But DD and her family have much more stringent time constraints. For them, the time they save is worth the cost of flying.

Quel surprise! Although the map site I checked shows it at 17:25 - and about even with New Jersey!

Nope, we are still flying. I don't want to use more vacation days to drive down. Plus, it is over 19 hours to drive from where I am in Michigan. No thanks!

We're considering driving this year instead of flying because of our dollar. We're from Toronto, and when I plug in our coordinates, it's supposed to take us 18 hours and 34 minutes and we're about an hour and a half away from the US border.

I've been trying to convince the husband to drive. With gas at $2 a gallon and even cheap airfares costing upwards of $1000 round-trip for our family, it seems like a no-brainer. Only problem is, neither one of us is crazy about extended car trips. We take one every summer, but it's a much shorter drive to the beach than to Disney. We're talking 5 hours to the beach vs 17 hours to disney world. We'd have to split it into two days of driving because neither of us wants to drive at night, so that adds at least 4 days to the vacation. The savings is tempting though...

We are driving its 15 hours plus stops. Tickets for us to fly were around 1700. Yep we will drive to save that much.

We have decided to drive this year ... 14 hours from PA. I just can't seem to pay over $1500 for the six of us to fly. DH is OK driving overnight Friday but we'll make the drive home over two days. The savings is too good to pass up and the kids are actually looking forward to the drive.

Orlando is about 13.5 hours if you look on Google Maps from where we are in Ohio. Though realistically, with stopping to eat, pee and all the other stuff that slows you down, it is more like a 16 hour drive. Stopping just once at an interstate rest area can easily kill 20 minutes. One should be stopping at least once every four hours to get up an move around anyway.

We are driving from RI which is about 19 driving hours in August. We always fly but gas prices are so low we decided to save some money. We have a Chrysler Town & Country with about 28,000 miles so that should be reliable. Estimated gas round trip is $190.00 compared to a $1,000 in flights for 4. We also always rent a car while at WDW so we save there also.
