Debt Dumpers - 2015

Thanks! I feel like I blew it but I was so nervous! It was 46 degrees and rainy and I couldn't wear a coat I was sweating so bad. I will know for sure in a couple of days but I'm trying to not get my hopes up. I'll just keep applying for jobs elsewhere. I cried on my way to work today, in addition to crying all day Sunday. I just need a new job!

Good luck fighting the urge! I get that urge and sometimes I just want to scream because my bank account is so low and I can't go lol.

Lol I feel you on the sweating! I don't ever visibly sweat, but I get crazy hot during interviews. You probably did not come off nearly as nervous as you think you were. I interview people often and for those that have been hired or I've interacted with later, they always say how nervous they were but it rarely shows. And I definitely cried on my way to work the other week too. Which I hate, because I LOVED my last job (also a one year position, unfortunately). I have always been very confident in my work product, and I feel like this job is destroying my confidence. I am wavering back and forth between anxiety and total apathy, so I'm trying to continue pushing myself towards apathy and continuing to look for better jobs.

Alright! Time for a savings update.

As of this moment in time, I have...

$2100 in the checking account and we are waiting on $530 worth of reimbursements from DH's work--that means we are $70 short of what my goal was for this month, but we had a couple of expenses go over budget, which explains the shortfall. I am happy with this progress and hope to make up the $70 somehow between December and January (if at all possible).

$600.02 in the savings account--yes, we earned a mere two cents in interest last month. :rotfl2: This is the emergency account. Goal was to get to $1000 ASAP, so this is pretty good for only a few months in.

$200.00 in the murphy money account--this is like an emergency account but more for expenses that I know will come up sooner or later, so therefore not REALLY emergencies in the strictest sense of the word (car repairs for example or replacing appliances and furniture). I wanted to separate this money from the actual emergency fund so that I can keep the emergency money for TRUE emergencies, like job loss or a medical emergency or whatnot. I just called it murphy money to keep things straight. It is NOT an invitation for him to come to my house for Christmas. Just sayin'! (We have some car repairs coming up which will likely wipe this out as well as some, maybe all :scared1: of the emergency account, so I may be back to square one come January.)

$165 in the vacation account--there isn't a single dollar from our budget actually going to this account. This is from doing surveys, collecting credit card rewards, the change jar, and any extra little bits I can scrounge up. I haven't yet cashed in all my sources, so I actually have more going towards our vacation savings, but this is the current balance in the bank account. This is quite disappointing. I had hoped to have accumulated twice as much as this by this point. I'm trying to step it up for December.

My Christmas shopping is nearly done!! I have to get the candy and chocolate part of the stocking stuffers as well as the gifts for the kids' teachers/bus driver/crossing guard. And that is IT!! And the money for that is set aside. And we stayed ON BUDGET this year! Woot!!

I am holding back some money to cover extra gasoline, extra groceries, and any miscellaneous expenses for the month. I'm hoping that I can stay within my regular budget and keep this money where it is...but it's nice to know it's here if I need it.

We also should have had to pay the landlord for our water usage for the last year. The housing corporation gets the bills, then they send them to the landlord and THEN they make their way to us. The bills are generated bi monthly, so I don't know why we only pay once a year. it's weird. We paid for a year's worth of water at the end of November last year. I was expecting the same for this year and put some money aside each month accordingly. But the bill hasn't come yet. So, that's steadily building. My plan was to zero out that line in the budget when the bill came (we should have saved a bit more than we need) and then start fresh for the next year with December's money. For now, it's all together but if/when the bill DOES come, I'll separate out December (more months if it comes more than a month from now) and follow my original plan.

I'm following the No Buy thread and the Eat at Home thread to help me maintain my savings goals and so far...so good! :thumbsup2

I have to admit it feels great to see a balance showing $0. It is very motivating and empowering.
Even if it doesnt make sense math-wise about ignoring the interest rates when deciding which to pay off, DR would say if we were all doing proper math, we wouldn't have spent more than we earned. Spending is often emotional, as is seeing those balances show $0.

Well - I just got aggravated at verizon for increasing my monthly bill and gave up my smart phone and went back to my basic phone. So that's a huge savings. I'm probably going to be the last person using the basic phone - don't know anyone else who has one

I have been on the fence on what bill to target next. Originally, I was targeting accounts that are higher than 10% interest. But I have three accounts less than 10% that are a quarter or half of what the higher interest accounts are. I think I have decided to move forward paying off the lowest balance.

The lowest balance (it's a credit card but only for AAFES - military exchange) will be paid by mid-December and is 10.24% interest. Then, a loan with 13.25% that I can pay off by the end of January (hopefully). Then, my car payment with 3.9% interest would be next.

After that, I will reassess what I want to do. I am leaning towards Dave Ramsey suggestion to pay off the smaller balances first regardless of interest rate just to have them gone and feel more accomplished. :)

I have been getting post 9/11 school money that I have been putting towards bills but will not be getting it anymore in 2016 since my last two classes are being paid by my employer. So, I will have to re-balance everything so I can also target the credit card debt.

Sounds like you have a great plan laid out! Just think - by the end of January that will be two bills that you no longer have and can snowball to your next!

You are on a roll!! I just have an emergency fund that Murphy hangs out at! Still have to finish my Christmas shopping - hoping to get that done this weekend. My homeowners insurance has to get paid this weekend too - I hate that bill

Speaking of Murphy. Grrrrrr. My roommate hit a deer on the way home from work yesterday morning. Probably totaled his car, still waiting to hear back from insurance. Just when he was starting to pay his share of bills, this happens.

Still not sure exactly how I feel about this and the oncoming problems it is going to create.

I hate the way the phone companies have barely any basic phones to choose from and everything is now geared towards smart phones. The only time I use my smart phone is at Target for the Cartwheel and to look at the radar on the weather app. I was in the store at Target and someone told me to use my IPad in the store. So I am thinking of getting rid of my Smart Phone-I don't need to pay an extra $40 month for internet on my phone. It used to be $10, then it jumped to $20 and now it is $40 just for internet services. We pay $237 for 3 phones on the Family Plan with U.S. Cellular.

If he has good insurance-maybe he can get a loaner vehicle till his is fixed.

That seems high for 3 phones. How many minutes do you have? Do you have unlimited data? We pay $187/month for 3 smart phones on a Family Plan with Sprint - 1500 any time minutes, unlimited texting, & unlimited data. (I don't think they offer any unlimited data plans any more though, we are grandfathered into it.) I would shop around for a new provider if you can. A lot of them will also buy out your contract with your current provider as an incentive to switch.

He's on my insurance policy - it was significantly cheaper to have his car listed as a second car for the multi-car discount than for each of us to pay individually. It is pretty good insurance, he got to call and talk to Flo yesterday when the incident happened. And we do have rental car coverage, so he can get one - if he can get to where the car rental agencies are. I enjoy living in the middle of nowhere, but it does have it's drawbacks on occasion.

My biggest complaint/fear/wondering what the heck is going to happen is the fact that he barely makes enough money to pay his bills now. There is no way that he can pay his bills if he tries to add a car payment to the mix. And I'm at my wits end with it. Pretty for sure I'm going to tell him that he can get any car he can find a way to pay for, but his rent and house utilities come first or he can live in his car.

Ouch! So now his accident will show on your insurance CLUE report and impact your rates for the next five years. :(

It's never a good idea to add someone to your auto policy that you are not financially or legally responsible for. Overall, it might save on monthly premiums but can have long-term impact to policy holder.

I'm not exactly sure how it is listed - other than we get the multi-policy discount. He had a different accident back in August, and I looked at what it would cost to drop him at renewal. My insurance would have actually stayed the same (less the discount). Luckily, the renewal was in November, so not getting hit with both accidents on the same renewal - and he will have almost the full 6 months to find other insurance. I don't see keeping him on my policy when it renews again because I know it will go up a lot more again.

Me too! And I use my iPad for basically everything - and everyplace offers free wifi so you really don't need your phone. I was on my moms plan since she gets a discount through her employer - and for 3 phones - only 2 were smartphones with the 700 minute shared plan and unlimited text went to $162 a month. Switched the plan yesterday and the new bill is $65 a month.

A little off topic, but I need some encouragement today guys. Had a really tough day at work, I basically cried the entire day in my office. I'm contacting a lot of people I know from my former job about trying to find another job, as my field rarely posts jobs online or anything, but I feel like I can barely take another day at my job. I know I can't just quit, and I know that you should never quit a job until you have another one lined up, but it's really tough when you're in tears every day over your job. DH said I could quit at the end of the month if I wanted, but I know I can't do that to us. DH makes good money, and I could get an hourly job in my field that would pay decently, but it wouldn't look great on my resume and DH doesn't make enough to support us indefinitely. The worst part is, I could've stayed at my last job, which I LOVED, for another year. Significantly lower pay, but it was a great job and a lot of fun.

And then, of course, I got my updated student loan payment schedule at the end of the day. It was way higher than I thought, but it turns out they made in error in changing my plan, so it's back to where it should be now. Just continue dumping away into that.

Sorry for the off topic post, sometimes you just have to vent. I am very thankful for DH who brought home starbucks, mexican food, and ice cream for dinner for me. :lovestruc

I'm sorry :( You have an awesome DH :)

Thank you. I know I do! He is so wonderful, I am very fortunate. Part of the reason I'm so upset is because I'm so happy with him, with my home, friends, everything else about my life, but this job is just dragging everything down. Just have to keep putting myself out there and hope something comes up soon.

I have been there before. Continue to actively seek something new and eventually something WILL come along. I worked in a very toxic work place before. Everyone complained, but no one left. I was the first to take the leap and jump ship and my life improved dramatically. Somehow get yourself into the mindset that 1. This is just a job, not your life 2. This is only temporary and 3. You have a awesome family to come home to. Things always work out, it just takes time.

How about looking for another job even if it's not within the company that your at? I left my job after 14 years there last April. Within 4 months of their new mgmt it was so horrible that I cried, couldn't eat and my hands would just shake from nerves. It was a salary position with paid health benefits and excellent vacation. I left it for an hourly job with no benefits or vacation. But you know what - I'm happy!! My health was even declining there!! I've gotten my own health insurance policy and just learned to cut costs wherever possible. Even if you find something else that would pay less - run the numbers with what your dh brings home and see if you can survive or where you might be able to cut some costs. Sounds like you have a great dh - and remember if you stay at a job causing the stress and emotion your experiencing everyone else will start to experience it too. Your happiness and health comes first!!
