I must be crazy! - An October-November 2016 Solo PTR - Update 10/9 2 Weeks to Go - That's a Wrap

I got another bit of Disney related mail this week – the tickets I ordered from Undercover Tourist finally arrived so I am all set with my 10 Day Park Hopper!

Woot!

This trip I am going to try and use DVC rentals for the first time.

You've got to write about how that goes.
I've been sort of intrigued/very leery of doing that.

I’m hoping to be able to stay at three different deluxe resorts, both before and after the cruise.

:faint:

This week’s cupcakes celebrate the most famous bear in Disney (no, not Duffy), Winnie the Pooh.

Aw. You made cupcakes after a bear named for my home town.
Aren't you sweet.

I love that you are feeding your co-workers Disney cupcakes on the quiet. Fantastically subversive ;-) Did you see that Qantas are now putting on more direct flights from Syd - San Fran? Something like 10 extra a week and American are picking up the slack and doing the Syd-LAX route. Even more options, although I guess your flights are locked in now?

They haven't picked up the Disney link at all yet - I'm guessing they probably won't realise until I do actual Mickey cupcakes or something super obvious!

I did see that - I'm limited in what routes/flights I can go on because I'm using points but it's going to be good for the next trip when I have to pay out of pocket again!

Those bee cupcakes are adorable!! We've stayed at the AKL, including during our last trip in Sept. It's one of my dad's favorites - however, keep in mind that you have to take a bus everywhere and the ride can be long... not so fun when it's late at night and you just want to be in your bed!

Thanks for the advice - I'm not too worried about the distance for AKL but mainly because I know I'm at Disney so a bus ride anywhere always leads to somewhere fun even if it takes a little while!

Sorry I'm late, had jury duty......thanks so much for your packing tips.........

Not a problem. I hope your jury duty didn't last for too long or if it did that it was at least an interesting case!

Knowing my luck it is not going to work at all because all the rooms will be gone! But I will let you know what happens if Walt is smiling down on me and I actually get the rooms!

So you're from Winnipeg then?

Were you ever in the Canadian cavalry?

Nice! I was debating a park hopper, but I think I'm going to try to go slower but longer and do one park per day myself.

I probably wont use it every day but I like having the flexibility and it only cost an extra $6 per day so I figure it's worth it!

Pretty ritzy! You have me thinking that if only I could get on budget I could squeeze a solo DL trip in next year, but my willpower is so weak...

I've set up another bank account and have the money taken out directly from my pay each fortnight so I'm not even noticing that it's gone. If I was doing it any other way I may not have the willpower either.

Great minds think alike! A co-worker made me Winnie the Pooh cupcakes for my birthday last week. They were scrumptious!

Happy birthday for last week!!!!! I hope you had a great day (which I'm sure you would have with Winnie the Pooh cupcakes!)

Love the cupcakes!

Glad your tickets arrived. I'm waiting till April/May hopefully they will release the fall discounts already again like last year.

I'm finally caught up on this, and I'm looking forward to following along! We're doing a 12 day trip to Disney World/Universal Orlando in January and I already feel like it's not going to be long enough, I'd love to do 4 weeks - but that will probably never happen as that is all of my yearly vacation time. Our trip is also happening on my birthday, but I'm worried I'm setting myself up to be disappointed by all future birthdays - how do you compete with signing the paperwork on your first house on your 27th birthday, and then spending your 28th birthday at Disney?

Your cupcakes look amazing! I can't wait to see all of the different themes you come up with over the year.

When we went to Disneyland, we stayed at a Super 8 within walking distance. It was cheap and nothing fancy, but we spent so little time in our hotel room it was worth having the extra money to spend in the parks. We did the World of Color dining package at California Adventure Park which I thought was worth it, we ended up being front row, center to watch World of Color. At Disneyland our favorite meal was in Frontierland at Big Thunder Ranch BBQ, but I believe that's closing soon :(

See I was trying to the opposite - grab them now before the annual price increase (which they are already advertising on Undercover Tourist!)

Thanks for joining in! 12 days sounds great - and in January which means it is super close too!

You cant beat the birthday at Disney but you can make it an annual event :D

And thanks for the DL tips - I'll keep them in mind when I start properly planning that part of the trip!

Your bee cupcakes looks so yummy! I'm sure your coworkers are really happy on the days they know you are bringing them in. I wish you the best of luck with renting points. We've rented twice in the past, but through a private owner. My parents have been renting through private owners for over ten years and have never had a problem. We have never used an outside source, since the prices are more than you can get through a private rental. The big companies that rent the point though provide a contract and if something happens you do get your money back. We just have a reliable owner we use. We loved DVC so much that my DH and I bought a resale contract this past summer. It's only enough points for us to use for our family every other year, but I'll take it. If you have any questions let me know. I know your value studio could be a tough one to get because it is a great value, as well as the BW standard studio. Pixie dust for you that you get your requests.

I'm crossing my fingers for a free dining window. I'll still come out better with a ticket increase and free dining. If it doesnt I'll just have to suck it up and pay the increase.

Fair enough. Free dining sounds great especially when you're a family but it's not worth waiting for when you're travelling solo!

I looked at going through a private owner but many of them want a minimum number of points to be used which doesn't work so well when you're trying to do a split stay.

And how exciting that you've actually bought into DVC - I'm sure I would be looking into it if I lived in the States!

47 Weeks to Go

I don’t have much of an update this week. I spent the first half of it run off my feet and work and then have spent the last few days stuck in bed with a stomach virus. So you know, in other words, a super fun week!

I have used my sick time wisely though. I recently bought the Harry Potter box set as my plan was to read them all before heading back to Universal on this trip. I’m one of those people who never read the books when they originally came out but I have seen all the films. Well all the time in bed has meant that I’ve managed to read the first five books in the last two days. I’ve had to stop myself from starting the 6th book as I want to save something for later! I think seeing the films has made me appreciate them more as I know the general story line and can picture it in great detail.

In a similar vein I purchased all of the Star Wars films to get up to speed before the Force Awakens is released. I had seen bits of the original trilogy but never the whole films and I had seen Episode 1 when it was released in the cinemas. After reading a lot of internet debates I’ve decided to watch them in the Machete order, and have so far watched films 4 and 5, then number 1 and number 2 is on the plan for this evening. That will leave 3 and then finally 6 to sit through before the latest one comes out. Can’t say that I am loving them so far but I’m reserving full judgement until I’ve finished the first two trilogies.

And finally in honour of your thanksgiving (it’s not something that’s made its way to Australia) this week’s cupcakes take their inspiration from Liberty Tree Tavern and are pecan pie flavoured.

Wow! Super fun!

:sad2:

Hope you're feeling better! :goodvibes

Interesting. I read them before seeing the movies.... actually, I'm not positive I've seen all the movies...

I was wondering what someone who'd never seen them before would think.
When IV came out back in '77, it was a sensation less for the storyline, than for the special effects which hadn't really been seen up until then.
My youngest DD wants to see it, but I'm kind of dreading it.
She watched Jaws the other day.
The movie that terrified the world back in '75?

She laughed during the whole thing.

And finally in honour of your thanksgiving (it’s not something that’s made its way to Australia)

Thanks! But that was a month and a half ago!

Oh. You mean their Thanksgiving.

I'm so sorry you had to sit through Episode 1 and 2. They... meander. I'm trying to think what they actually add to the Star Wars films, but I'm at a loss. They had the opportunity to make a really interesting character out of Darth Maul, but he just becomes part of the scenery to a beautifully scored fight. Episode 3 isn't horrible, as it does have things that are actually relevant to Anakin's story, but it sputters as they try to rush towards the end. It feels more like a "hey I remember that guy from the originals!" kind of thing rather than a cohesive story. It's definitely more watchable than Episodes 1 and 2 though. I grew up on the Original trilogy and have watched each movie more than I can count, and I still love Empire Strikes Back. It has such weight to it. There's a very satisfying flow to it, and John Williams' score, much like the other films, is absolutely fantastic.

If I could, I would like to make a recommendation that is either really good or absolutely horrible. A lot of it will depend on how much you like dark humor, really. If you have the right sense of humor (and that is a really big *if*) I highly recommend Mr. Plinkett's Star Wars reviews, by RedLetterMedia. There is a review for each of the prequels and they are not anywhere close to short. They range in length from about an hour and a half to just under 2 hours. There's a lot of crude jokes and language, so again, be forewarned, but they're not typical "this movie sucks" kind of reviews. There's a stunning amount of detail and insight into why they feel the movies are not good. Again, it's a very specific kind of humor that you get or you don't, so it may be something you dislike.

Feel better quick!

Edited to add: Star Wars: Clone Wars is a really great show the fleshes things out between Episode 2 and 3 and adds a ton of characterization to a whole slew of characters. Highly recommended.

Splitting a room as a solo it was still nice to have... but we were soooo stuffed the whole trip. I was a very different trip. Very lazy meandering around type trip. If I was to go by myself alone again I would probably just stick to snacks, a couple CS, and my favorite or two TS.

EVERYONE should read HP at least once if you liked the movies. Similar but yet so very diffent, but I could see where it would be very nice to put the visual to the book instead of comparing the other way and being possibly disappointed.

I only watched them to appreciate the WWOHP but also once I start something I have to finish it which meant I had to watch all eight or none of them!

I may not have laughed openly at Episodes IV and V but I did think to myself on a number of occasions "seriously, people love this??"

Thanks! But that was a month and a half ago!

Oh. You mean their Thanksgiving.

You got your Canadian cupcakes before them so I think I've made my allegiances clear...

Thanks - I'll add this to my list of things to read this weekend!

I'm definitely not doing more than 1 ADR a day this time (unless it was maybe a breakfast and dinner). It's just too much food in the Floridian heat!

I've finished book 6 and have just started the last one so I'm almost done reading them all now!
