DCL carry-on alcohol policy changing Sept. 30 2015

I have been advocating a "future Imagineer" track of toys, cast interactions, buttons, and gender neutral, pro science Disney "identities" for kids of all genders. I personally abhor being called a "princess" at Disney and always sweetly assert, "I don't need a Prince Charming. I have my own brain!" Moms around us always nod in approval. It must be hard to be trapped in some sort of Disney princess hell when all you dream of is your little darling running a major cancer treatment center. Call her a "future Imagineer." Show her the awesome little shop where she can buy a lab coat and her first microscope. Scientists make those rides, and study all those animals at Animal Kingdom! Enough of my favorite rant.

I AM actually a 39 year old female scientist. I love being called a princess.

that was my thought to and while i may not need a prince charming he sure makes life more interesting. and yes, i have my own brain.
no offence to littleblackegg but if i were to hear that comment come out of someones mouth i would be nodding her way to, not in approval but to say 'did you hear that?'. lol.
yes, i want my 'princess' to grow up and be successful but i don't see danger in being called a princess.

Not sure how this turned into a boy/girl program discussion, but I'll chime in.

I'm a scientist and an attorney. I don't have a problem with princesses. Princesses grow up to be queens. They fight wars and run nations and become great patrons of the arts. They don't need a prince charming, they choose a prince consort. Maybe not all the Disney princesses are so multi-talented, but there's a slew of real princesses from history my young daughter can learn about.

i love this post!!

I'm not a doctor but I play one on television....your educational credentials don't really give your opinions about princesses any more clout. A simple, well-stated expression of beliefs/opinions is all it takes.

Anyhow, it seems this alcohol frenzy has finally sputtered out.

and happy labor day

I second this! I use my brain plenty hard at work every day... I enjoy relaxing and kicking back like a princess on vacation! Only this year, this princess will be without her Rumchata...very disappointing. I guess the 'prince consort' that I have chosen will have to make additional trips to the bar for me!

If you you just want cocktails on the verandah is there a reason you could not just slip a bottle of kettle one in your luggage. I imagine the reason for the change is to make money, but also because some guests over do it.

Yep. But if it's seen (X-ray, sniffing dogs, random search) they'll take it. Best bet is to conceal it.

Q:May Guests bring alcohol onboard?
A:Effective for cruises embarking on or after September 30, 2015, Disney Cruise Line Guests 21 years and older may bring a maximum of 2 bottles of unopened wine or champagne (no larger than 750 ml) or 6 beers (no larger than 12 ounces) on board at the beginning of the voyage and at each port-of-call.

Guests wishing to consume wine or champagne that they have brought on board in one of the dining rooms will be charged a corking fee of $25.00 per bottle. Please note:

  • These beverages must be packed in carry-on (not checked) bags or luggage.
  • Any alcohol packed in checked luggage will be removed and stored until the end of the cruise.
  • Any wine or champagne in excess of 2 bottles or beer in excess of 6 beers will be stored until the end of the cruise.
  • Bringing liquors and spirits (including powdered alcohol) on board is prohibited. These items will be stored until the end of the cruise.
  • Guest MUST retrieve any stored alcohol at the end of the cruise. Items not retrieved will be destroyed, and no compensation will be offered.
  • Alcohol brought on board may not be consumed in any lounge or public area.
Please note that the Disney Cruise Line alcohol policy is subject to change without notice.

I just got a call back from "Karl Holz's Office" regarding the letter I sent.

The rep started by buttering me up thanking me for being a loyal Disney fan and for taking the time out of my day to write my concerns to them regarding the new policy. A couple things stood out to me.

One, I too got the speech about essentially fearing for the youngin's in rooms where there is booze. I had made a comment in my letter and on the phone about now not being able to enjoy a cocktail on the verandah that I paid for, because I will have to leave the room now to go get it (I fear I'll wake my kids coming and going, or I'll go early and end up with a gross watered down drink by the time I get to it. LOL) I said I also worried some folks will now perhaps leave sleeping kids in a room alone to go get their drinks. And I mean young kids, as that's what I have. He countered with expressing fears of little ones being in the room and having access to spirits. I countered back with "well but wine and beer". And he expressed that the alcohol content is much lower. Questionable. Makes me wonder if there is ANY instance of a child being alcohol poisoned or sick or if this is just a convenient scapegoat.

Two, he mentioned that he didn't want to get anyone's hopes up, and that he is not suggesting the policy will change again, but they are taking everyone's feedback very seriously and guest opinions matter, and blah blah blah. I don't think for a second that they are going to change this policy, but I found it very strange that he chose the words he did as it almost implies it's possible, which seems a dangerous game to play.

Three, he specifically said DCL did not want anyone viewing alcohol carry on as a perk, or a reason to choose their line. He said the new policy is still quite lenient, and 'no cruise line allows spirits' - which from reading here I think is untrue, it's just a rather hefty price point change for that.

It was nice that they called, and he actually had called several times trying to reach me, which is a bit impressive. (I didn't know they had my cell number, and I kept seeing a florida number pop up so I was ignoring it, lol) Overall though I agree with the previous poster who said the calls - while time consuming - are to avoid putting anything in writing that can be called up later. But I am glad that I got a call - I was concerned that new cruisers would not be taken seriously. I'm booked, but my sail date is Jan 2016, so I haven't been onboard yet. Nice to know they still at least think my opinion is worth discussing.

Verdict: It's not going to change, I will be stunned if it does. They are trying to make people feel valued by listening though, which is taking man hours to do. He addressed my email by point, so clearly he read it.
It's so pathetic how DCL reaches with their excuses. Pathetic. Utterly. I would've laughed at the fool trying to feed me a line of pooh like that. And I would've told him exactly what I thought of his performance. Then I would write a letter about that bunch of silliness. LOL!

Getting caught and having to go to the "Naughty Room" is both embarrassing and time consuming. At best, you have strangers rummaging through your things. At worst, you have to appear in person at the Security Room to claim your luggage.

I would love to see a Naughty Room. I would hope I could get a badge or a pin!

**edit**
Pictures and selfies with the Naughty Rrom crew would be fabulous souvenirs!

No one is going to search your room, but if someone decides to throw a Toga Party , now they have reason to shut it down. A little too much drama here

No one is going to search your room
They don't search your cabin. They search your luggage. Note the sentence that says: "
  • Any alcohol packed in checked luggage will be removed and stored until the end of the cruise.
This clearly indicates that they will go through your stuff without you there to watch them. Although sometimes if they suspect contraband, they will call you down to the Security Room and open your bag in your presence and then go through it while you watch.

Just an idea......

If you enjoy a fruity drink, order it without alcohol. It's cheaper and it will taste the same because the pour is weak anyway. The bartender will get his 15% gratuity on your drink purchase.

Maybe this will send Disney a message since they will be selling less alcohol.

Better way than this, make your own non alcoholic cocktails!pirate:
