Getting older, thinking about selling our DVC, but

Exciting years ahead! DH and I love "down time" away from the parks relaxing and enjoying the resorts!:cheer2: Can't wait to bring grandkids one day!:thumbsup2

Yes, Tigger1. See above quote for multiple spots. I was surprised by BWV. Maybe he had a secret soft spot for the DVC he loved to disparage.

I sometimes think about it because of the dues and we have more than 550 points, but as long as I can keep up with them, I'm keeping them! We were just discussing how we wish we had more $$ handy back in 2010/2011 (?)....resale prices were low and we did scoop up a couple of small contracts. Now I won't even consider adding on ... resale is out of my reach.

I'll be in my mid-80's when my first set of points expire....it makes me happy to know that my other contracts will probably outlive me and that I will hopefully be able to leave that legacy to my kids.

The new changes to Hollywood Studio are sorely needed. That is my least favorite park....but I do love Toy Story Mania and Fantasmik.

I love how Disney offers different venues for various age groups. The run Disney is a wonderful motivator. My goal is to get registered for the 5 k F&W next year. If I can get in then I'll start that training I would never think to train without this event.

We're adopting a "wait and see" approach to selling. We have a trip planned this winter (home resort, BCV)and shall see how it goes. The last couple trips haven't been as magical as previous ones for various reasons, some were the fault of WDW, others just rotten luck. The upcoming changes sound exciting, but the recent changes (new FL, FP+, new restaurants) haven't impressed us much. So, I guess I don't trust that the new stuff will be spectacular or innovative. If they can get some if it done quickly, we'll hold on to our points and hope for the best!

I originally bought DVC in 1999 for my mom and I. We liked to go to Disney a couple times a year and I thought the 1 bedrooms were so nice. She thought I was nuts until she saw it. She came home and told people on the phone about "our apartment". In 2003 we did an "extra" trip and stayed at CBR. She said "I don't like this one room setup". She passed away in 2005. I booked a trip about a year later, I had planned to take my aunt but she wouldn't go (never has flown or been far from home). So I went solo, kind of as a "last trip" before selling. I still had trips with my friends that we would stay non-DVC. The last night I was walking on the boardwalk after Illuminations, watching the performers, looking at the boats on the lake, hearing the music from the Dance Hall. It hit me that I couldn't give it up! So now I share DVC with my friends or go solo. I don't have a plan to sell, I'll keep it as long as I can physically go (I'm 55). I don't know if I'll make it to 82 but we'll see! It's nice to know that I can sell it if I have to.

I love your story. So glad you decided not to sell. Unless we fall on very hard financial times, we have no intention of selling. If something happens to one of us, I expect the surviving one would make family trips with the adult children and the grandkids that we don't have yet.

An iconic DVCer and DISer whose screen name was Richyams now rests in peace in that very graveyard. This is copied from a tribute site for Rich:

"Rich's legacy... / Lisa (love of his life )
Rich's ashes were scattered in Walt Disney World (his favorite place in the world) at these areas: -Animal Kingdom: Tree of Life - Epcot: Germany (Flower garden), Japan (Large tree in the flower garden) - OKW Resort: On the rocks behind the Lighthouse, behind the last building, facing the golfcourse - Boardwalk: From the balcony at BWV, right next to Jellyrolls - Magic Kingdom: Haunted Mansion, right next to tombstone reading "Here Lies Good Ol'Fred, a great big boulder fell on his head", at the exit wall. Finally, you can see his "legacy" at Epcot, where it reads "Richyams....a legend" with a large heart!"

Do you know how she was able to do this witthout being detected?

I tell my family and anyone that will listen to take my ashes and put them in their front pockets and put holes in their pockets and let me loose that way so they wouldnt be noticed. No one seems to take me seriously but I think its a good plan lol

Thanks.

The older we get (dh and I) the more we love our great 'escape'. We didn't buy until our kids flew the nest, I wanted to buy from the beginning but dh didn't think we would go as much when the kids were grown. Surprise! We go more often and love it!

I tell my family the same thing. They also don't take me seriously but perhaps after this post, they will!

I'm not sure you ever get too old for Disney. My parents are looking forward to a trip to Disneyland in December. They will be 86 and 83. -- Suzanne
we take the grandkids, and when they get o old, we will eat and drink our way around epcot, LOL.
also, many times we have stayed at animal kingdom, and gone to universal, as its much cheaper, and we have used our points from Lake Tahoe, to Yellowstone, to DC and beyond! Love those DVC points. I'll be 84 when ours expire. and wondering what we'll do LOL.

I did not even BUY into DVC until last year (and I am going to be 71 in a few days) after going to Disney for 40+ years.
DH (71) and I are in great shape and go several times a year. We go by ourselves, with grown children (who aren't gong to have children) or I've gone with girlfriends.

The planning and anticipation keep my mind young and the lunatic running to 4 parks in a day (we would be bored to tears staying at the resort during the day) keeps our bodies young. We go out for all meals even though we sometimes stay in a (wonderful) 1 bedroom. Eating out at Disney is part of our fun.

Disney is especially my antidote for depressingly cold Midwest winters.

I love your post and your attitude!

We are now 73 & 72 bought in 2000 (1999 points) Now own a 1,000 points. We also rent a four bedroom home 9 miles from WDW (Jan 3rd to May 7th) to avoid the winters in NJ, and have season pass's. Never get enough Mickey, never sell our points. Seems like there's always something to see. We can only stay two or three hours in the parks so we go at least twice a week. Our children 39 & 49 visit for a week with the grandkids (26, 20. 8 & 6) So much fun watching the young ones having a blast. We have been very lucky and been able to take the family on 12 family cruises. We asked the kids if they wanted to inherit money or go on vacations, Thank god they chose vacations, now we get to see them having a lot of fun

How did you accrue all those points. We are up to 860 but I want at least 1000. How long do you stay each year?

We have roughly 1400 points that we have accumulated over 10 years., we first bought in 2003. We have 20 parts to our contract, many were 50 and 25 point acquisitions. I am 68, DH is 70.

We have spent 3+ weeks in DVC accomodations ( Vero Beach and WDW) in recent past winters, but we have a dog and have decided to try to become snowbirds, wintering in FL and summering in Cape May NJ. To do this we need to sell our Ohio home. This winter is the first that we do not have at least a week long stay booked, we thought for sure we would have a FL home by this time. Once having a home in FL happens then we will see how many points we will use and make a decision about selling.

I have had my knees replaced earlier this year, so we have not used our points as usual. My sister is using 200 of them to bring friends of hers to AKV during Jersey week, and 6 of us will be in Aulani for 6 nights in a 2 bedroom ocean view in just about 3 weeks from now! We are celebrating my new knees and my DBiL's fight with cancer. The other couple with us are good neighbors from Ohio. We had thought for sure our Ohio house would have been sold by this time, so we planned this cruise to Hawaii ( RCCL ) and stay in Aulani as a grand reunion! We never thought we could still be in Ohio this winter, but we may be!

I enjoy WDW more than DH does, and he enjoys going to VB and HHI. We will have a very hard time deciding which home resorts we will sell if it comes to that. We mostly book during the 11-8 month time period.

Loved to hear your story. Everyone's is so unique. 1400 points sounds amazing as does wintering in FL and summering in Cape May.

As another Midwesterner suffering through brutal winters, best wishes to you on the sale of your Ohio home and following your dream.
