CDN $ is so low!

What price are you estimating for a car rental?

$220. I'll PM you with my number crunching madness ;)

The problem with the car rental is since we are staying on site at Universal afterwards, I want to return the car to a location other than the airport. I'd rather not have to pay for longer days as well as parking at Universal, when we won't need it there at all.

We are still going since departure is 17 days away! But I have warned my son we will not be spending as much on stuff while we are there.

I have never stayed offsite but thinking of a trip to the dark side next time we venture down. I have never heard of Skyauction, is this the best way to get a good price offsite?

All 4 trips to Disney for us have been onsite with Free Dining.

Here's my thought on this issue ... take ME to POR (i think that's what your ticker says?) and rent the car from Car Car Centre (again, this i what i assume you're doing). When you're ready to head over to Universal just return the car, take ME to MCO and then get a shuttle to Universal. That will save you the cost of returning to a different location and parking at Universal (which i think isn't included?)

We would only have the car rental if we decided to stay off-site. Therefore, we'd have to get it at MCO. We are currently booked at POR and will not require a car if we keep things as is.

Ugg...I went ahead and paid a chunk of my trip this week before it gets worse. $2676.78 USD = $3595.06 CAD a difference of $918.28 ouch.

Ouch, indeed. I was also a bit alarmed to realize that our typical WDW vacation is also about $1000 for the difference in currencies. At least the airlines price in CAD and so far, if you can be a bit flexible, they're still somewhat reasonable. So far...

Here's hoping it gets better!! I paid our balance couple days ago. I've been using a U.S. MC currency card from CAA for last few trips so I don't use my cc so much. You load money on it & just like cc. It's been great. Sadly exchange rate hasn't been so great lol Balance wasn't due for couple weeks, but I so hard to tell if rates will go up more or down, so just bit the bullet and put $ on we've been putting away and paid it. I hope rate gets better when we need to get spending money. But if not, we'll just have watch what we spend. I'm not going to worry about it and just have fun!! My daughter and I work hard and we earned this trip. She has been working and agreed to pay her share so it's been a big help. We can't wait!! :jumping1:

Thanks, I'm keeping my eye on it to see if it goes down. Right now, adding the car, parking fees and gas with the off-site stay is very close in price to my price at POR. While I realize we would be gaining in space, we would be losing out on the ability for me to take my 2 youngest ones back to the hotel if they tire out and my older one wants to keep going. There is 1 or 2 nights that I want to take advantage of EMH. I'm booked with an agency that not only offers a great discount on the rooms but also nicely discounted park tickets with a bonus day at a water park. Therefore, when I do the cost analysis, staying off-site is pretty even for us to stay on-site. Now if I could score the Vistana at an even cheaper rate and find a sweet deal on a car rental, I'd do the switch and rework our touring plan.

I get that! I've got 10 & 7 yr old ds' & and an infant dd, the vistana was great for space (being able to put her down in a separate room and still have time with the family) and most of all...LAUNDRY!!! Nothing better with the kids lol

I stalk the rental sites like a hawk and am usually able to get a pretty decent rate (this time am getting 10 days renting a minivan at alamo for $245 all in) so for *me* rental, skyauction and parking still doesn't even come close.

That said, this trip I have an offer much like yours in terms of tix and have gotten a great deal on site so this will be my second ever on site stay.

I'll be spending less $ this time. I used to not buy much, then went on a 3 day shopping trip with my sister and a friend, and they created a Florida (mostly Disney) shopping demon! I have had to pay extra duty or whatever on most of my trips since. This time, I will not have to pay. But I am considering limited my Universal time. I wanted to spend 2 days, but with the extra on the tickets, and then taxis to/from Universal, it just adds too much. We may drop it down to one full day. Hopefully in late August, one full day split between the 2 parks will be ok. My problem is that I could actually spend 2 full days immersed in Harry Potter. Hotel is paid for, Disney tickets are paid for, (free) dining is paid for, so it's just our Universal time, and our outlet/church day. And a good chunk of that could be taxis!

Just got back from a 4 day camping trip to the Oregon Coast; Oregon is a sales-tax-free state so we usually shop a lot down there. This time we ended up buying 10 pairs of socks and a pair of running shoes for the kids at a Carters Outlet. Cost was $32USD which ended up costing us $42CDN. Boo. Usually we spend anywhere from $200-$500+ Oregon, but it wasn't going to happen this time. So for our upcoming cruise/Disneyland trip we will definitely be curbing the spending on souvenirs, etc. Grrrrr.

Grrrr is a word I have been using when thinking about the exchange rate! Thanks for making me smile while thinking about this mess...

Those of you staying at vistanas. Which one? How far is it to WDW? And is breakfast included? I'm seriously considering not staying at Disney bc of the exchange rate ... Heartbroken over it, but the $ is so low

We stay at the Sheraton Vistana Resort. Its closer to Disney than its sister property, Sheraton Vistana Villages, by a couple of miles (but really, they are not far apart from each other at all). Breakfast is not included for us as owners, but some "hotel" stays (booked directly with Sheraton, for example) do include daily housekeeping which you can "trade" each day for a buffet breakfast for two. The villas have full kitchens, though, so making quick breakfasts is easy and a great savings versus dining out on a daily basis.

Proximity to Disney property for the Resort is excellent.....its right by DTD. We can watch the Characters in Flight balloon rise and descend from various points on the resort property.

There's a great thread that's overseen by a fellow Canadian, bankr63, over on the Orlando Hotels & Attractions board. It's full of excellent information on the Sheraton Vistana Resort, if you want to check it out:

Oye vey :sad2: . My $168 MNSSHP tickets just cost me $221 CDN.........and that was using my Sears Mastercard (saving the 2.5% foreign exchange fee).

I've gotta say, that was might painful  .

We're taking a few steps to "try" and keep costs down.
This year we won't be buying the photo package.
We have ordered food from Garden Grocer and will be eating breakfast in.
We have Tables In Wonderland to help minimize the cost of our meals out (18% discount, including alcohol).
We have cut back on at least one planned table service dinner.
We have shuffled a couple of table service meals from dinner to lunch.
We will be returning to a few more affordable favourites, including the spectacular Wilderness Salad at Wilderness Lodge, and those yummy hot sandwiches at Earl of Sandwich at DTD.

Heck I was going to Disney and other places stateside when the $$$ was a lot worse than it is now ..won't change things for me. If I want to go - I'm going.

Booked at DLR for October about 2 weeks ago and we were originally looking to stay at the DLH but with this terrible exchange rate we settled(wow, settling on a trip to Disneyland, must be nice) on the Fairfield Inn by Marriott. Paid the balance because we don't anticipate the dollar getting any better. 2565 USD for us and I think it ended up being about 3350 CAD for everyone. Sigh but still we are going to Disneyland!! :dogdance::dogdance:
