Official Avengers Half Marathon Weekend 2015 Thread

I am not going to be able to run a race and get my proof of time in to get put in a certain corral. Summer is just flying past! How bad is it going to be in the very back corral? Do a lot of people walk? I am not a super fast runner, but I plan to run and try to do my best, so I'm worried about getting caught up in packs of walkers based on what I am reading about last year.

To be honest, it's not the first place I would want to be. If you are running under 3:15 for a half, then it's probably going to frustrate you. Essentially the last corral are the leftovers where runners forgot to put in a proof of time, don't have a proof, or the main goal is just to finish.

You'll notice by previous rundisney corrals, it's the largest number by far as it's essentially the rest who did not submit a proof of time or are over 3:15. You also have a lot of people who really cannot keep up the 16 minute pace. As a result, there is more of a scramble and pushing of people to get to the front of the corral since the 16 minutes does not start until the last runner of the corral and they need as much of a cushion to not be picked up as possible.

also, the lines for pictures with characters will be the longest as the rest of the corrals will already be in line. or you may not be able to get in line as the wait will allow the balloon lady who is 16 minute pacer to pass you and endanger you to getting picked up.

However if you are looking at this as something you just want to take slow and enjoy and have no problems meeting the 16 min per mile pace, then it could be a good thing.

Thank you for the info. I'm not planning to stop for lots of pictures with the characters. To me, it's a race, and I want to get done in a time I will be proud of, but I also am not a fast runner. I don't anticipate needing 16min/mile, though. I'm just a little worried about this level of crowds for my first big run.

I did Star Wars earlier this year from the last corral after not putting in a POT and I didn't find it all that bad. The first mile was a struggle because it was cramped, but once you got out on the road with a few more lanes there was plenty of space to overtake those going at a slower pace. Things got tight in the parks, but given how narrow some of those paths are during the races I think that would be the same regardless of where you start. Once we got out of the parks the group had really thinned and you forgot at times there were others around.

I really only had to slow down or stop for others once and that was when we were moving from MK to DCA (and I'm not sure if it was during the 10K or half to be honest) but they had us in a narrow path that was only wide enough for 5-6 people abreast and everyone had to stop and walk. Once in DCA you could run again.

thanks! that doesn't sound so bad. I know I will have to take walk breaks, so that shouldn't be a huge deal. I was just worried I would constantly be caught up in people with the high numbers attending and being in the back.

Can someone clarify the course for me? I see it mentions a trail section. I currently only ever run on paved roads, so I'm curious, are we talking woodsy trail, dirt path, paved rail trail type path? I want to be prepared. I have a 3 mile flat graded dirt rail trail near me. I could train on that occasionally if necessary, but I want to be clear what to expect.

We haven't run Avengers yet but from what we've heard it was similar to what we had for DL 1/2 in 2013, which was basically a stretch of dirt/gravel along the Santa Ana "River". Think that's where people really had more issues with the wind last year since the trail and "river" is more dust and dirt than water; don't know that you'll have too many footing issues with it, though somebody who ran last year can probably offer more detail.

Just a reminder that tomorrow is the proof-of-time deadline. If you have it and haven't submitted it yet, get on it! Make sure you include all of the necessary information for them to look up and verify your time.

GO HERE to provide your proof-of-time or to verify that you have already submitted with complete information. You can e-mail disneysports@trackshack.com with any questions, although if you have questions at this point, you're probably best to call for a (hopefully) quicker response.

I am always terrified that it didn't go through or that it will get lost. lol.

*goes to verify submittal.... again* :surfweb:

Right there with ya! We've had the added fear this time and the last W&D that somehow they won't verify my wife's time since her last name for registration now differs from her results time. We've e-mailed and spoken with them, so it all should be fine, but until waivers and corrals are released it'll still be nagging in the back of our minds... :scared::rolleyes:

I want to take an informal survey if that's okay with you folks. If not, you don't have to answer :upsidedow

For those that have already purchased airfare for the Avenger's weekend, I am curious how much you are paying. Feel free to share as much/as little information as you want:
  • Price
  • Area/airport leaving from
  • Dates of Flights
  • Airline
  • When you booked
I haven't booked my flights yet since I am hoping for the prices to drop some more, but I am genuinely curious to see what kind of deals some of you may have gotten, and just to compare the cost from different areas of the country.

We're flying out of Louisville to John Wayne airport on Southwest. We each booked at $372 round-trip initially (May 14), then checked back and re-booked (June 5) at a lower fare of $308 round-trip. We'll have 12 months to apply the $64 credit toward another flight.

I've read before that 7-8 weeks out is a pretty sweet spot for purchasing, but we went ahead and pulled the trigger in order to have flight schedules we liked -- the other carriers weren't even close. The re-book price was fortunate as it makes the flights cheaper than our last Disneyland trip in 2013. I still check every so often in the beginning of each week to see if it's dropped any more, just in case we're able to save any more. ;)

We are flying Providence to SanDiego on the 11th to spend a day in San Diego first and go to the Zoo which DD7 will love, and then LAX to Providence on SW on 11/16. We booked the day flights came out for November, which was early May. We paid $194/pp for PVD-SAN and $176/pp for LAX to PVD. I have checked and the first leg has come down and we got a $20 per person credit, the second leg has only gone up as far as I have seen and is now over $300/pp. All the other airlines either had horrific times (no over nights for this family) or bad prices. One other, I think USAir, had a similar price to SW, but that includes no baggage, which we will get for free on SW, plus SW has no change fees, just the change in fare, so for me to fly another airline, it has to be a minimum of $50 pp each way cheaper. I feel like it is a decent deal we got, its cheaper than our last flights to WDW, for more than double the mileage.

We haven't bough tickets yet, but I nearly did tonight! We're flying from NYC, 11/12-11/15 and tickets are $250 each right now. I would have bought except just tonight I bought tickets for a WDW trip in Sept. There's always flights out of NYC so we're not pressed to buy them right away.

I plan to fly out of Newark and haven't seen anything that low! It's not worth the savings to drive to to LGA or JFK though for us.

Flying Nov 12-17, from JFK to LAX, $330 round trip, non stop on Virgin America

My sister is looking to defer and everyone, including the rundisney page, indicated there was a link from the race's registration page that could be used for deferrals, but I can't find it. Could someone please let me know where it is?! Am I just looking in the wrong place??

It might not be posted yet. The Disneyland half is about a month away and apparently the deferral link JUST appeared a couple of weeks ago (even though they'd said it would be posted late June). :confused3 Might be best to call or email runDisney and ask them.

Hi @Wink25 ...Skimming over the page, it doesn't look like they have a date for Avengers deferral up yet. Even under the FAQ it just redirects back to the event's Registration tab -- where it ultimately will be posted -- without any information made available there.

To Ariel's point, the Disneyland half deferral link apparently didn't go live until last Tuesday, July 28th. With that kind of timeline in mind, and their tendency to do things on Tuesdays, we can probably expect something maybe around September 29 or October 6. :confused3

*ETA: If you aren't able to reach someone with runDisney by e-mail or phone to find out for sure, it probably wouldn't hurt to check back a week or so before those dates to be on the safe side. There is a limit to the number of deferrals available, so you or your sister will want to submit sooner rather than later.

@Wink25 also FYI, there will be a $55 charge for a deferral (at least that is what is listed on the Disneyland page). And then I think the difference between this year's cost and next year's cost will need to be paid to register in 2016...or something like that. :confused3
