What do you think of Kona Cafe breakfast?

I'm with the previous poster (and probably the minority) that while Kona is definitely a yummy and satisfying breakfast I don't think it's worth making a special trip out of your way to the Poly. I had the Tonga Toast, and DH had the regular pancakes (2 pancakes that took up an entire dinner plate, which he couldn't finish) and while it was a delicious meal it's not a destination restaurant for us. If it fits in with your plans, great!

We DID make a special trip for it and found it to be disappointing. Atmosphere-wise, it reminded me of Denny's. Have they remodeled it? I know there was remodeling at the Poly...

The food was just so-so. I have wondered whether the problem was that we didn't order the Tonga Toast, because that's what everyone raves about. My husband had the eggs, I had the omelet, my daughter had the pancakes. The potatoes that come with the eggs/omelet were dry and un-special. The omelet was just ok. The pancakes were hard to cut, like they had been sitting there for awhile. We won't go back, but lots of people rave about Kona. Maybe we chose poorly or hit it on an off-day.

I don't even particularly like pancakes, but I LOVE the mac-pineapple pancakes. definitely worth a trip for these.

The POG juice, the Samoan, and the Tonga Toast were big hits with my family as was the monorail ride afterwards (we just did the resort loop for my 2 year olds).
The atmosphere of the restaurant itself left a little to be desired, but visiting the Poly is nice if you aren't staying there or eating there another day.

My husband had the big Kahuna and scraped off the toppings on his pancakes. My kids got Mickey waffles. Other than the Tonga Toast and the Samoan (and the juice), nothing else stood out as especially great.
We are staying at the Poly in Feb, and I'm thinking we will just get Tonga Toast from Captain Cook's.

I've had breakfast several times at Kona Cafe and had great experiences each time. Service was great and it never took long to get my food. I'm not a fan of bananas so I've never had the Tonga Toast but I absolutely LOVE the Macadamia Pancakes! Yum!

Great breakfast! The kids love tonga toast and I've learned to make it at home too. The sausage that comes with it is yummy! You can also get the tonga toast in the quick service dining area. The press pot coffee is very good too! I think of this restaurant as a little hidden gem.

I also get the Big Kahuna, mostly bc while I LOVE the macadamia pancakes, I need a little savory with my breakfast. We found the Tonga toast way too sweet. But those macadamia pancakes area one of my favorite breakfast items of all time.

Back when it was all Nescafe at WDW, the Kona presspot was like heaven after days of coffee purgatory.

Our family loves Kona. Kona breakfast is a tradition for our last morning at WDW. We are disappointed when we cannot make it on our last day.

I usually get the tonga toast but I'm big fan of eggs benedict so I might break with tradition and go for that.

I have eaten there one time and had the Samoan... it was great. We have reservation in September.
The Tonga Toast , which seems to be THE breakfast everyone raves about, looks too sweet to me.

I can't wait until Sept to find out for ourselves! We lucked out and got free dining this trip, so we're branching out a little from our usual places. I've heard lots of fantastic things about Kona and I knew we had to try it out. Nothing like beginning a long day with a good breakfast!

While I had Tonga Toast on our last visit and i was deeee-lish, DH had the the Samoan and I seriously thought about stealing it from him. That's what he gets for letting me have a little taste! :lmao:

Its a favorite in my household and we do go "out of our way" to eat there.. But we do it on a monorail park day, so we aren't really going out of our way.. Even just the fresh fruit in the pineapple is worth it for me.. Its a must on every trip..

Just a thought...The Tonga Toast is really good if you like sweet & rich stuff for breakfast. If you think it might be over the top, order a more savory dish and get an order of TT for the table to split. The TT was too much for me, but 2-3 bites for dessert--I can hang with that. :earsboy:

Are the pancakes in the bounty platter the same as if you just order the macadamia pancakes? some pictures made it look like one has nuts in the cakes and one just has the nut butter.

no, they are regular pancakes with the pineapple topping and the mac nut butter

Kona is our traditional breakfast on the morning we leave. We always order the macadamia pineapple pancakes and the Samoan to share between the two of us. Add in Lilikoi juice and a press pot of coffee for the perfect breakfast.

I dream about the Somoan! It is unbelievable! My husband asked me yesterday if I put Kona on our list for our next trip. Yep. My son, who is not a breakfast eater, can't wait to go back and get the Samoan, too. I made the mistake of giving him a bite of mine.
