CDN $ is so low!

With every drop of the loonie, our dream of going to Alaska (as least on DCL) for our 40th birthdays next summer gets more distant.... :( at this point the exchange would add an extra $1800 on to our cruise fare for the 4 of us (and that's for an inside cabin). Yeah......nooooo.

So discouraged! Exchanged money yesterday and $500 USD cost $663 CAD. Was hoping to go back to WDW next June for a few days and then go to a Siesta Key...when I see what the exchange comes to, it makes me think twice.

I haven't heard any good news for the near future as well. We bought an annual pass in December 2014 and are planning to get in a third trip in this year (Aug 28-Sept 5) Ignore the ticker, our kids think we are going in November. We also rented DVC points when the dollar was a lot better...So for us the main cost is going to be food. It may end up I no longer can order a glass of wine or two with every meal:scared:

I cancelled :(

We still had about $4000-$5000 U.S. that we needed to exchange for this trip. All that was paid was one leg of the flights and the deposit. Our daughter starts University in the Fall and we needed to be spending less on this trip, not more. I can't justify it at these prices. I always said I hadn't hit my threshold yet.. well.. now I have.
I'm not ruling out an offsite trip as we really enjoyed the last one and saved a ton on lodging (which was more spacious and nicer) and food costs. We will have to see how we feel about that as the winter looms.

Aw, sorry to hear......though with a child in post-secondary school myself, I can totally understand the reasons behind your decision.

Fingers crossed that you are able to find an offsite option that works with your budget and can make your trip still happen.

I still need to buy our tickets and meal plan for our Nov trip. Everything else is paid off. But the tickets will be $2000US alone. I'm feeling a little ill as I watch the dollar drop. I'm now trying to decide if I should go ahead and do both now - I'm not sure the dollar will get any better at this point, it seems to only be getting worse. :(

I'm sorry, that sucks. If I hadn't bought DVC points for our trip, I'd be considering cancelling as well. :(

As disappointing as you may feel you made the right decision. If we weren't so far into the expenses of this trip, I'd consider it as well.

Sorry to hear you had to cancel, but totally understandable. Hopefully you can rework things and make the trip happen at a later date?

So I think I'm one of those strange people who don't mind staying off site, who don't make a ton of dining reservations (or any at all usually) and who doesn't splurge a lot on the fancy add ons. When we went to DW about 4 years ago we stayed off site at a hotel that had a free breakfast and a kitchenette in the room. I could prepare things to take with us into the parks, and we could heat up leftovers or make natchos when we got back at night and were hungry. It worked out great! No, we were not "immersed" in Disney but we still had a terrific time and yes, while the commute (city bus! LOL) was a drag at times it was also kind of fun. My DH still remembers fondly the girls snuggled up next to him on the bus on the ride back to the hotel, playing cut the rope on his phone or talking about our day.

The dollar sucks but we're still leaving on our road trip on Friday to DL because we've paid the condo last Sept and I got the passes through AM so there's no turning back now! We will bring snacks into the parks again, we aren't planning a lot of sit down dinners (just one lunch on the day of our 20th anniversary!) and we'll have fun regardless. If you do re-work your plan to stay offsite you'll still have a fabulous time. I hope it happens for you!

I am currently in the beach portion of our trip (did 7 nights at WDW last week and now are in St. Pete Beach for 10 nights). While the weather is cloudy and stormy, I am looking at options for next summer and I'm not sure we'll come back to FL. Maybe we'll take a 1 year pause and do something else...

With the dollar going down so fast, we decided to pay off our DCL cruise booked for next Spring break at the end of the month so we don't have to worry about the dollar going down even more. And to make it more affordable, we'll probably drive to Miami instead of flying. The 1500$+ we will save will allow us to do the excursions we want and treat ourselves a little.

We stay off-site, we tend to rent a private villa so we have the extra space, facilities to make meals (not that I make many!) and our own pool. I like leaving the parks behind after a long day and to be able to spend a day by the pool if we want to. This year we have the special treat of staying at RPR for one night for the FOTL passes for our two days at US & IOA.

We usually do breakfast out one or two days in a 14 night holiday and the rest of the time have the usual cereal, toast etc. Eating out isn't cheap per say but it is cheap compared to Canadian prices or now with the exchange I guess they are closer in price. That said, if you were at home you would still have groceries to buy so it's not all just 'holiday' money. Creative accounting maybe, but it makes me feel better thinking of it like this!

Thank you for the understanding everyone :). As long as it doesn't drop too much more we will rebook offsite (hopefully at the Vistana again!) and make more meals in the condo. My Southwest flights can still be used and I can push them out as far as June so it will give us some extra time to save if needed. I am feeling pretty good about postponing. There are so many last minute expenses for dd and her dorm/school needs. I'll just concentrate on those for now and worry about the trip a little later.

I hear you all and am in the same boat.

I have 4 days at POP 7 day cruise then 4 days at POR booked. If we don't see resort prices come down (a Canadain dollar deal would be nice) or our looney go up my POR stay will be switched to POP.

I've seriously contemplated booking at the Vistana through SkyAuction. I haven't used them but my dates were available for a 2 bedroom for $549 for 1 wk.

It's an exciting time for your daughter. I remember very well the anticipation of beginning University (some 20+ years ago). I'm sure you're very proud. Disney isn't going anywhere.

We used skyauction for the Vistana in May (it was only $500 for our wk!) and had a fantastic experience! Highly recommend!!!

We've also used Skyauction for the Vistana and went for around $520 for a 2bdrm last December. Right now any dates I would be looking at are Feb-June and while Vistana is on Skyauction is starts at $800 or so and goes up from there depending on fees. I am thinking it's too far out to see the lower prices.

Thanks, I'm keeping my eye on it to see if it goes down. Right now, adding the car, parking fees and gas with the off-site stay is very close in price to my price at POR. While I realize we would be gaining in space, we would be losing out on the ability for me to take my 2 youngest ones back to the hotel if they tire out and my older one wants to keep going. There is 1 or 2 nights that I want to take advantage of EMH. I'm booked with an agency that not only offers a great discount on the rooms but also nicely discounted park tickets with a bonus day at a water park. Therefore, when I do the cost analysis, staying off-site is pretty even for us to stay on-site. Now if I could score the Vistana at an even cheaper rate and find a sweet deal on a car rental, I'd do the switch and rework our touring plan.

Like a lot of you, we're not at all sure where our plans for next year will take us, or not. If the dollar continues scraping along, we might just upgrade our camping trailer and do more travelling on this side of the border. Love Disney in the fall but I think we'll be taking a year off.

Yep, I think that's the case as well. My boss got a 2 bedroom this past early May, a very slow season at the Vistana, via Skyauction for $450 plus $20 admin fee. We got a one bedroom for the same week for $50 less. I would keep an eye out around Christmas time......you will probably see the lower rates for 2016 then :thumbsup2 (unless, of course, the dropping dollar sends many Canadians offsite for the first time, and occupany levels increase a result).

What price are you estimating for a car rental?
