Pillow family Alaska/Canada Mega Trip!

Day 11 – Embarkation Day

Cruise day is finally here! A few words about our pre-cruise time in Vancouver . . . I felt like we were lazy tourists here. There was so much more to explore, such as Grouse Mountain, Gastown, and Granville Island. But I think we needed to chill out a bit and re-charge for the second part of our vacation. I also would have liked to spend more time in Stanley Park. We’ll just have to go back I guess.

That morning, we finished packing, and ran downstairs to Starbucks for breakfast before checking out. Mom and B offered to pack our two remaining bottles of wine into their rolling carry-on to make it less cumbersome for us since we just had backpacks instead of an easy to handle carry-on (Disney requires you to carry-on any alcohol versus packing it in “checked” bags). I should have known that handing over my precious Tofino pinot noir to the man who can drink any college student under the table would prove to be a mistake! Bye Westin . . .

As I mentioned in post #1, we had booked a porthole room for the four of us. At booking time, I was not willing to spend the additional $2K for a verandah. We decided to arrive at the port early and attempt to upgrade, as you can generally get a better price at the port if something happens to be available.

We caught cabs in front of our hotel and were pulling into the port at 10:00am sharp. I had read various posts about this port and how crazy things were with long lines, etc. We had the polar opposite experience. This was the quickest and easiest check-in experience we’ve ever had. Our bags were taken as we exited the cab, so we didn’t have to fool with those anymore. We were directed upstairs and walked right up to check-in with zero lines! (Note: someone had mentioned that they had just reversed the process where previously you had to go through security first before check-in)

We had an 11:00 boarding time, and Mom and B had 11:30. However, we were both able to check-in much earlier than this. The check-in was quick and painless, and then I walked down to the manager’s station to inquire about an upgrade. I REALLY wanted a verandah room, but I didn’t want to get my hopes up since the cruise had been sold out for a while. Luck was on our side (thank you seagull!), and we were assigned a verandah room for an additional cost of $615 (very worth it in my opinion). More on this later, but we used that balcony CONSTANTLY. We loved having it!

After check-in, we were directed downstairs to go through security and then customs, and then to the cruise waiting area. This process was unbelievably easy. We had to wait about an hour or so before boarding.

ry%3D480

Mom and B . . . He is smiling because of whats in that purple bag there!

ry%3D480

At some point during the hour of waiting, characters appeared for photos. I’m going to apologize in advance here for knowing zilch about which characters were onboard. My kids have never been super interested in characters. Even when they were small, they would avoid them. And now that they are teenagers, they still don’t care much. We didn’t do the character breakfast, nor did we go to the Frozen show. Sorry – we are boring people! (I have to admit, I was a little curious about the Frozen celebration, but there must have been something else more important going on that night.)

After boarding, we headed directly up to Beach Blanket (I kept calling it Cabanas all week) for lunch. Then I went to reserve Mixology for the next day (sea day). Mom bought a few bottles of Cabernet for herself and B and was kind enough to purchase some beer for DH. The room was ready at 1:30, and we headed down to check out the glorious VERANDAH (cue choir of angels singing)!

DH and I sat out on the verandah for a while – just thrilled to be there. At 3:00, DH and I met our Disboard group in the Promenade Lounge to mingle for a while. We both enjoyed meeting a great bunch of people! Then we had the mandatory muster drill, followed by the sail away party and lots of picture taking while leaving Vancouver and passing under the Lions Gate bridge.

Our luggage arrived about 5:00, and it wasn’t until we began to put clothes away that we noticed that the room was not very clean – dirt in closet, hair in tub, toothpaste splatter on mirrors, etc. This is a first for us; our rooms on DCL have always been spotless. I could not locate our stateroom hostess, so I called housekeeping, and a manager was sent. He promised to make it right, and he was true to his word. While we attended the All Aboard Show, they cleaned our room properly. We were not upset, as the problem was corrected promptly. The next day, we were sent a bottle of wine and arcade cards for the kids. This was not necessary but a nice gesture, nonetheless.

We had the later 8:15 dining time. Our rotation was TAPTAPT (for those of you who know what that means), which meant that we were in Triton’s for our first dinner. This is probably my favorite restaurant. Nice décor and quieter than the others. I can’t recall what I ordered that night. All I kept thinking about was the scenery outside that I was missing. From our dinner table, we could see out a window across the room, and land looked close enough to reach out and touch! I had ordered “The Alaska Cruise Handbook” by John Upton (thanks podsnell for that tip), so I knew that we would be traversing the Seymour Narrows soon, and I really couldn’t care less about the food (a first!). I wanted to be out on that balcony!

I’m too lazy to take food pictures, but I will try to do a quick food summary at the end of this report, highlighting both my favorite foods and not so favorite ones as well. After dinner, the kids went to Vibe, and DH and I spent time on guess where??? Yes – the verandah. Some pics . . .

That's so exciting that you were there during FIFA & that the Olympic torch was lit!

Ahh, I'm sad that the otter was too mean to feed. I love those water weasels! lol Excited for your cruise posts!

I love them too - so fun to watch! Thanks for following along.

Congrats on getting such a sweet price on an upgrade for verandah!!! Once you check in where is the desk located to enquire about upgrades at the port? Our first cruise is this September (yes eventhough I live here we have NEVER cruised) and would like to see if we can get an upgrade from our inside room.

In Vancouver, the manager's desk was to the end on the left (facing check-in). The best thing to do is ask though as I suppose that can change. I think you will have the best luck if you get there early. Good luck!

And by the way, in case anyone is interested . . . they charged the upgrade to our stateroom account. I was able to pay off my stateroom account by using my DVA (Disney Vacation Account). However, Guest Services had to call shoreside in order to apply that particular account. Its important to note that shoreside is closed on Sundays. So, if you want to pay your stateroom charges with a DVA, make sure you are not doing it on a Sunday.

If you have no clue what I'm talking about, please feel free to ignore!

Day 12 – Cruise Day 2 (At sea)

I love sea days! Its certainly fun to explore the port towns, but I love the relaxing nature of a sea day. We had tentative plans to attend the naturalist presentation this morning. But other than that, we had nothing scheduled until mixology at 4:00.

DH and I were up fairly early as we didn’t want to miss scenery or wildlife. We ran up to Beach Blanket about 7:30 to eat before going to the naturalist presentation at 9:30, which was definitely interesting and worth going to. I may have learned more than I want to know about flying squirrels and shrews, but it was interesting nonetheless. And I THINK this was the presentation where he talked about Romeo, the wolf who used to roam near Juneau.

I ran on deck 4 about 11:00 and then grabbed a snack from the pool deck (mini-lunch). Everyone was going in different directions at this point. DH was in the gym, and the kids were on some type of mystery quest where the eventual reward is chocolate if all the clues are solved by week’s end. Even though my kids are teenagers and not interested in all things Disney these days, they do enjoy some Disney cruise offerings, such as Vibe, the various onboard movies, and this scavenger hunt. They loved solving each day’s clues!

After my mini-lunch, I came back to the room to shower and met up with DH who was starving. I agreed to walk up to Parrot Cay (buffet) with him since he still needed to eat. Of course, I couldn’t resist sampling a few things (mainly the yummy desserts), which was followed by this brief conversation:

DH: Didn’t you have lunch already?

Me: No.

DH: I thought you ate after your run.

Me (guiltily smiling): That was really just a post-run “snack.”

DH (silly grin with eyebrow lifted): Uh, ok.

Me: Shut up! (This may have been a slightly different phrase that I can’t type here as I would surely be banned from the Disboards for life.)

We ran into Mom and B having lunch, so they joined us. B was having a small healthy lunch and Mom’s dessert plate looked like mine (the apple doesn’t fall far!).

After lunch, we spent the remainder of the afternoon on either the upper decks or on our balcony. We couldn’t get enough of the beautiful scenery. At one point while in the stateroom, an announcement was made that there was an active pod of whales on the starboard side. We bolted upstairs (since our room was port) and watched whales swim everywhere around us. We saw one orca breach and spotted many other humpbacks fairly close to the ship. I didn’t have the camera, but we did have our binoculars.

Planning note: I HIGHLY RECOMMEND purchasing a nice pair of binoculars. We had purchased two pair of Bushnell Legacy 10-22 x 50 Zoom Binoculars on Amazon for $128 each. The zoom feature was nice, but what made these binoculars great was the size of the lens (the 50 part of the above number). We have some smaller binoculars that are 10 x 25, and they didn’t work as well. Nikon also makes a similar binocular, but we chose the Bushnell since it was cheaper.

At some point during the day, I remembered that we had yet to retrieve our wine from Mom and B. I jokingly said to DH that we had “better go get the wine before it disappears.” When I walked into their stateroom, to my horror, I saw B sipping on a beautiful deep red colored liquid. My inside voice said “Please please please let that be his own Cabernet.” My outside voice said, “That’s not my pinot noir is it?” about the time I looked over to see my half empty bottle of pinot. Folks, I really am not a greedy non-sharing type person. However, when it comes to wine, I think I must suffer from the following disorder:

novinophobia.jpg

Unfortunately, I think B suffers from this . . .

723559717149873482_1f241221018c.jpg

Obviously, these two disorders don’t play well together!

Moving on . . . some pictures from our day . . .

We had a 4:00 mixology res, and I’d been wanting to attend this seminar for quite some time. We had cancelled it on our previous cruise because we were too busy doing other things (and the one before that), and we ended up doing the same here. None of us wanted to go inside when we could sit outside and watch whales and gorgeous scenery. One of these days, I will make it to mixology!

The evening show was The Golden Mickeys – my favorite! I highly recommend it if you haven’t been. Since we’ve seen the show multiple times, we decided to skip it. DH did some much needed laundry in what he called the “laundromat from hell,” and then we ordered the fruit and cheese platter from room service to go with what was left of our wine.

ry%3D480

We dressed up just a little for formal night (I had no desire to go all out on this cruise), and met Mom and B in Animator’s Palate for dinner. Afterwards, the kids went to Vibe and we hung out on our balcony and read in the room until the kids returned. We happily turned the clocks back an hour before conking out for the night.

All in all, it was a great day with nice weather. Unfortunately our weather luck ended today; the remainder of our cruise would be mostly gloomy and rainy.

Hi there!! Glad you're reading along. How was your trip? Funny that we were both cruising fjords at the same time - just halfway around the world from one another.

Day 13 – Cruise Day 3 (Tracy Arm)

This morning we attended the glacier presentation by naturalist Pete Griffin. He did a fantastic job. Even the kids enjoyed this one. After the presentation, we went back to the room to . . . you guessed it . . . sit on the balcony so that we could see this . . .

ry%3D480

ry%3D480

We pretty much spent the rest of our day up on deck or on our balcony viewing the beauty of Tracy Arm. But before the ship turned into Tracy Arm, we were awarded an incredible show! DS remarked that he could see something out in the water, after which we all ran out to the balcony and observed a pod of orcas who was having a grand time jumping and playing in the water. Just unbelievable!

It was a gloomy day for Tracy Arm, and it began to drizzle while we were up on deck. The kids didn’t last long and went back to the room to watch from the balcony. It was COLD! I’m so glad we had raincoats, gloves, long underwear and hats (I bought North Face 3 in 1 jackets at a nearby outlet for a steal for DH and the kids. The women's Momentum Triclimate is a nice one if you can find it discounted). The drizzle continued throughout the afternoon, and it eventually began to rain harder. As the Captain was turning the ship near Sawyer Glacier, we finally went back to our room to get warm. It was nice to have the covered balcony to keep the rain off.

Food notes: The hot chocolate at the drink station was yummy. I thought the split pea soup in bread bowls was just ok (servers were bringing those around on trays). I never made it to the barbecue, which I believe was in Beach Blanket.

Warning . . . excessive number of Tracy Arm (and family) pictures follow!

I’m kicking myself for not taking better notes today. I have absolutely no idea what we did after leaving Tracy Arm. My guess would be fruit/cheese tray with wine, as that became an evening tradition with us. We skipped the show (again), followed by dinner in Parrot Cay. Fantastic day!

I feel so lucky to have seen them. It was a bonus that my camera was handy, and I was able to take a few shots.

may i ask what kind of camera and lens you used to get those shots?

I have a Canon 60D with an 18-200mm lens. A professional photographer recommended this combo to me quite a few years ago - not super high end professional but a nice camera. I have to admit that I have no clue what I'm doing with this camera (I need to spend some time with the manual). I think the secret to catching the whales is to put your camera in "sports mode", so you get quick shutter speed and multiple photos with just one click.

Loving your trip report...I don't go til next May but I love reading about other Alaskan cruises!

Day 14 – Cruise Day 4 (Skagway)

For today’s adventure, we had reserved a mini-van with Avis. The plan was to spend the day driving the Klondike Highway. I had purchased Murray’s Guide, which gives a mile by mile commentary on what you’ll see along the way. Avis was located in town - an easy walk from the ship. The four of us rented the van and swung back by the ship to pick up Mom and B. The weather was still gloomy on this morning, but thankfully, it was not raining. The ship offers various types of excursions on this same route, but we preferred to do our own thing. With the six of us, it was most economical to rent a mini-van.

Based on a report I read here, we decided to go directly to Carcross without stopping. We wanted to do the dogsled ride at Caribou Crossing, and the goal was to arrive before the tour busses. It was very foggy and began to rain as we climbed in elevation toward the White Pass Summit (later the weather would clear up a bit, and we would actually see a hint of blue sky). On our way . . .

ry%3D480

Once at Caribou Crossing, we took the dogsled ride, followed by an informative talk on the Iditarod. Of course, the kids adored seeing both the adult working dogs and the puppies (and who am I kidding, so did I!). Pictures . . .

Its impossible not to love on them. We are such suckers!

We ate lunch in the café (cash only – sandwiches, chips, etc.), and walked around a bit before continuing on the highway to Emerald Lake, which was our turn around point. The lake attracts visitors due to its interesting green color, which is derived from calcium deposits.

On the way back, we stopped at the Carcross Desert, before slowly making our way back to Skagway. We stopped at various places along the way - just quick stops to look, and take a picture or two. The scenery was gorgeous!

Back onboard . . . Tonight’s Walt Disney Theatre show was the movie Inside Out, which we all wanted to see.
