I do the same thing. It is not necessary to replace everything. Luckily my child does not demand everything be new each year.I go through everything they bring back at the end of the year and figure out what I can keep for the next year. I check all the pens and markers and keep the ones that work. I keep fabric book covers, wash them with the regular clothes, and use them again (up to 4 years so far). I even keep composition books and spiral notebooks if they are over half empty (just tear out the used pages). I have one of my older kids inventory everything so I avoid buying things I already have.

It gets easier as they get older. We recycle scissors, notebooks (I buy the better ones at office supply stores) binders, pencil cases, sharpeners, locker lock, partially used notebooks are used to do homework or scratch paper. I look ahead for what is age appropriate for at least the next grade level. Certain things we have always needed to restock pencils, erasers, colored pencils, etc. My son goes into 7th this fall.I'm hoping I can do this in the future. DS was in Kindergarten this past year and he destroyed his pencils and crayons and went through his glue sticks.
If anyone has to buy books for summer reading or English class (dd needed three books for 6th grade English so I'm guessing I'll need to buy more this year) I highly recommend thriftbooks.com. So far I've gotten four books from them (three hardback and one paperback). They've been under $4, in excellent shape, and shipping is free if you spend $10. And they have had a great selection of what I needed. So much cheaper than buying new from Amazon.
