Nintendo coming to Universal?

It's going into the KidZone area by most people "in the know"...that would be the area where the Animal Actors, Feivel, Barney and Curious George is right now....plus there's LOTS of space out behind it that isn't being used.

That's better than what I thought was going to happen (phew, Toon Lagoon is safe (for now))... but I wonder if that means Universal is trying to completely eradicate Woody Woodpecker. Would be sad, considering Universal never bothers with that IP outside of its theme parks, but also unsurprising... for the same reason haha

Also, I read through all of the posts and there's a lot of rumors going around that Nintendo is losing relevance with young audiences.

It's not, trust me. And I can tell you for a fact that just the Smash Bros. games and the latest Pokemon installments have, as far as I can tell, revitalized interest in Nintendo in both the younger audience and the college-aged audience. I believe if Universal really gives it their all in marketing this as they do Harry Potter and HHN, the Nintendo attractions will do a lot for them, perhaps even rival the Harry Potter areas (which will be a welcome change for me, personally). There's a LOT of innovative things that Universal can do with the Nintendo IP... a Pokemon Snap attraction has been flying around in the imaginations of a lot of YouTubers. I think having a Pokemon game of sorts scattered all over the Universal property (a la Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom at Disney / the wand windows in the Harry Potter areas) would draw a serious crowd. If they do a Mario Kart attraction, which I hope they do, I believe that the absolute WORST idea is to have a Tomorrowland Speedway or bumper car Mario Kart attraction. If anything, I think that they should tap into the almost competitive feel that the Radiator Springs attraction at California Adventure has, and plus it in a way that lets guests use items (like in Mario Kart). There's a lot of innovation to be had just in the Mario Kart IP alone.

I do wonder, though, where they would put all of this. I suppose it's all but confirmed that Marvel isn't going anywhere, and there really isn't room in either of the parks to put this, so does Universal have a gigantic plot of real estate behind Studios or IOA? Either way, I'm pretty curious / cautiously optimistic about all of this.
That is the big question. They purchased land on the other side of I-4 including WetnWild but who knows why. Plus the logistics of putting something on the other side of the highway seems difficult if not impossible.

I'm a bit late in the conversation, but I don't think Disney has anything to worry about regarding "under-developing" Frozen. Frozen is every freaking where. When I went to the parks over spring break, Frozen was plastered in multiple places around MK and Hollywood Studios, and I know that there are multiple Frozen celebrations and shows in the works. There are a lot of Disney franchises that definitely need to be tapped into, several of which were mentioned above, but Frozen is not one of them.
For two reasons I'd say Frozen is underdevloped.

1)Cars Land
2) The future work at Tokyo Disney Sea on Frozen.

Frozen is a more than worthy comparison to Cars Land. Having seen what they did there makes me believe that Frozen is far from fully developed. A true land like the one underway in Tokyo is obviously what a fully developed IP should be. The sing along, parade, some banners, and a short ride in Norway do not represent the IP in its fully developed form. Not that I'm saying it's necessary or that I want it, but saying in its current form that it's fully developed is wrong.

Chip and Co. reporting (aka posting a rumor) that "Nintendo is making a huge deal with Disney".

No details beyond that. Anyone heard anything?

Not the most relatable source for info to be honest. But they have been negotiating a deal for a Mario Mickey video game crossover and may some film rights. Nothing for the parks universal has that.

Yeah...I think Mario in WIR 2 will be in the works.

I have teenage sons, and their friends around all the time...they love all the new stuff in videogames, sure but nintendo is HUGE,I am talking HUGE with the kids.... this is going to be SO popular (Disney, take note)

I would have to agree with you. I don't think Pokemon and Nintendo are as relevant as they were 10 years ago. While the Wii is the best family gaming platform, I think a lot of parents give their kids a tablet and a call it a day. They do a lot more than a system would ever do, and they are portable.

Needless to say, I do think a Nintendo land would do the park some good, and would attract a large audience. But in terms of the new generations, I can't say I agree with that.
Oh.... Pokemon has an amazing following with each new generation of kids, I find it hard to believe but it does! My 5 yo nephew is one of the 'new followers' as do the Nintendo platform games and characters, these things are 'memory lane' for the young adults, and 'awesome!!!' for the kiddos ....smart move,Universal!

Plus the older "kids" seem to stay pretty loyal too. My 22 year old was talking just the other day about how awesome Mario Kart is.

That's what I've read too.

This is akin to something like Disney getting rights to use Warner Bros. characters for Who Framed Roger Rabbit, but nothing in the parks related to WB...those went to Six Flags

Personally, i don't find that Nintendo has that much relevance these days.

Of the top 10 best selling video games of all time, 6 are Nintendo IPs, 5 of which are from the past ten years, and 7 were Nintendo console/handheld exclusive. Their consoles and handhelds still do great numbers (Wii being an strange positive anomaly for them) with some to little third party support.

Properties like Legend of Zelda, Starfox, Mario and all of his related sports/boardgaming activities, Animal Crossing, and Pokemon continue to sell and receive an amazing amount of hype. So much so that during this last E3, large parts of the gaming population were mad/disappointed at Nintendo for not showing some of those properties.

Nintendoland or Island will pull people in. Mario is neck and neck with Mickey Mouse in terms of brand recognition.

I just sort of wish Disney and Nintendo had partnered instead. Mario Mickey and Princess Peach Minnie would have been great M&Gs in the parks and the room for expansion/innovation of attractions just seems bigger.

With that said, I'm sure Universal will do a great job with it (and I hope it's not just a Nintendo themed playground to replace Fievel's.

Right, I find this ironic for something like Mickey Mouse which really doesn't have many movies or TV show appearances over the decades that aren't directly related to the theme parks.

Mario is a cultural icon, and has nothing but positive attributes associated with him...along with Nintendo. Family friendly, safe, fun.

Nintendo is still by far the leader in the handheld market.

I am so excited for this. My boys are just starting to realize how awesome Nintendo characters are. We have a Wii and are looking at getting a DS for the family. When this is all done we will fly across country to see it. :teeth:

I just listened to an interview with Terri Harden about Tokyo and her opinion is the reason Tokyo does everything better is because it's licensed from and not owned by Disney and the company that owns Tokyo D wants it to be the best in the world. They actually look to invest in the guest experience rather than trying to focus on what they think the guest with accept.

The Oriental Company is fantastic. They definitely do want everything they do to be the best just look at their fantasyland expansion and their Frozen expansion. They invest millions all the time and it shows especially with their attendance.

That, and the Japanese have high quality standards overall, so that also reflects in their parks. I LOVE spending money at Tokyo Disney because I know it is being re-invested back into the parks.

Their soap dispensers now dispense Mickey shaped soap.

I think there's definitely something there. Oriental Land is a pretty great operator. It's geared to an older, more adult, local audience who expect different things from a theme park experience than the guests of WDW. Whereas one is a Resort Destination first, OLC and even DLR are Theme Park operators first. So sometimes things get lost in the shuffle of WDW's multiple layers of management, whereas DLR and OLC are laser focused on certain objectives.

I've been saying ever since the Marvel/Disney deal, Nintendo would be the best replacement for Marvel Island(especially with The Wizard being basically a long commercial for Nintendo & Universal Studios Hollywood). Including coming up with easy flip overs like the free standing spider-man store becoming a pokecenter, Hulk becoming Metroid(repaint) or Donkey Kong(retheme with the gamma cannon becoming a blast barrel) and Spider-Man becoming either a Star Fox or a Smash Bros mash up type ride(not to different from the Hannah Barbara/Nicktoon rides concept)

I am gonna fully fan boy when this opens, I've been wanting a Nintendo Park since the early 90's. I'll even go dress as Captain N.

Marvel isn't leaving universal tho.
