Kleenex is a brand name...like Coke and Xerox. It has become synonomous with the product itself. I'm betting that even Australians don't say "I'll have a carbonated cola flavored beverage" or "please make an instant photo copy of this document.".
And never in my entire life have I used the word "hoovering".
My house is not glass and if it was...there would be nary a fingerprint in sight.
No we say coke. However, some restaurants or food service places, will say "we don't have coke, will Pepsi be ok?" But I guess that's that same there?
But, for example, we don't say sprite, we call that lemonade. We don't really have what you call lemonade here. Which is disappointing because I LOVE it!!
I got into a sticky situation at Portobellos one night when I ordered a grape vodka with lemonade :-/ lucky the bar lady was like "oh that's a weird combination" and when I asked what she would have it with, she responded "sprite!" So we got. Into that conversation before the drink was made. That would have been terrible tasting!!
Plus... How the heck would I order a raspberry flavoured fizzy drink?
Here we just call it raspberry (I'll have a vodka and raspberry)
I was desperate after 3 weeks in the U.S. and the server couldn't get their head around what I wanted. I gave up and ordered coke.
We definitely don't say Xerox, we say photocopy.
My bad on the hoovering. I must have heard it on movies?
Ohh...I thought of another one....
Scotch Tape
Ha!
<very proud of myself>
Lol. We call that sticky tape.
I love these conversations!!!
Also, here in Australia, it bothers me when people say "Nike" rather than "Nikey"
