Marathon Weekend 2016

I was talking to a friend that ran the 2015 half at the WDWMW, and he was complaining that it was super cold before the race (remember, I'm from Brazil, so... what is cold for me may not be for you...:littleangel:), and we discussed about buying the race retreat.

Any thoughts?

It was really cold this past January. I am from Michigan, I am familiar with cold and it was cold. But most people I have talked to said that this was colder than usual and honestly it felt really good in the early part of the half and marathon as it got a lot warmer later in the morning. I have not done the Race Retreat so I can not speak to it personally but I am sure it would offer a warm place to hag out. But eventually you have to head to the corrals and that is what throw away clothes are for. I have a friend at work who thought Race Retreat was not worth the cost.

Honestly, I was cold before the race in the corral but I was so excited the bigger issue was being impatient, not being cold. Maybe some of the others who have done the Race Retreat can offer better feedback.

I ran the 10k and am from Wisconsin. It was defintely cold and I didn't bring the running clothes I should have but I survived. The 40 degree temperatures I ran in were bearable because I came from a cold climate. I have not done a race retreat but have looked into it and some say it's worth it and some say it isn't. I would definitely say that one should prepare for cold running as well as he heat. I came under prepared but I felt fine I think because I was more used to the cold.

Yep, it was chilly this year. In 2012 and 2013 I don't remember it being very cold before the races, but then in 2010 it was snowing, so it really varies. I always overpack for any trip I take, and this year I'd brought a few hooded sweatshirts, long-sleeved shirts, leggings and old sweatpants as my throwaway clothes, so I think I handled it better than people who hadn't packed as much because I could layer up. The one thing I wish I would have had was a small pair of gloves...that would have been nice.

In my case I don't think I'll ever do the race retreat because I just don't want to pay the money for it. I'd rather go to Goodwill or whatever and buy some throwaway clothes/an old blanket to toss before the race(s). :confused3

I just need to be a better planner. I am sure the race retreat is more comfortable than standing/sitting/huddling in the parking lot/highway, but I'm not sure with all of the excitement and nervous energy of the event that I would take much advantage of it.

I didn't think about the corrals! OMG!
I guess I'll be freezing with or without the race retreat...:scared:

.You can never tell what temperatures you'll get in Florida in January,it could be 28 degrees like in 2010 where it snowed for the half marathon or it could get to 85 degrees like in 2013.

You never know! I spent 2012/2013 New Years in Florida, and used my UGG boots one day and t-shirt and shorts a few days after!
(Which also happens in São Paulo!)

I love cold...but I keep thinking that I'll be alone there, feeling cold an sleepy ( I'm not a morning person)...
But, at the same time, I could spend this 120 dollars at the EXPO...hahaha:scratchin

I hope I'll survive too!

I keep thinking the same...I mean, 120 dollars for a warm tent? :scared1:

Looks like I'm officially in training mode now

as for the cold weather I think as long as you plan accordingly and bring some warm throwaway clothes you should be good I just cant bring myself to spend the extra for the race retreat I would much rather spend that money elsewhere on souvenirs or something else once I get running I'm going to forget all about the cold (if it is cold, who knows with Florida in January) anyway

I always pack throw away sweatshirts for my races when cold weather at the starting line might be a problem. I also pack a throw away poncho or large trash bag if rain is in the forecast. Not sure that I would ever purchase the retreat package at Disney's prices.

That said - packing stuff for the Dopey is going to be more of a challenge. I don't have 4 throw away sweatshirts right now. Going to have to give this a little more thought.

Small tip on throwaway clothes for pre-race cold weather in the corrals: before heading to WDW for my race this year, I cleaned out our linen closet & found we had a few mismatched sheets. So, I packed an old sheet and used that to wrap around my shoulders before the race. It was a great, warm cover up, and it was long enough that it doubled as a blanket to sit on. I was also able to share with my friend; the sheet was long enough to wrap around both of us. Just my two cents for an alternative if you don't have enough "throwaway" sweatshirts.

Along those same lines, I buy a cheap fleece blanket ($2-3). Not only can you wrap up in it, but it makes a great cushion to sit on, rather than sitting on asphalt or wet grass. The wilder the color and print, the better. If you wanted to spend more $, you can even get a Disney themed one.

Exactly - RR doesn't help with the wait in corrals. I'm Floridian, so yeah - 50 is "winter cold" to me lol! I ran the 10K and half this past January and all of the Princess races - it was absolutely frigid. The Frozen (truly - wind chill was in the 20s) Princess 5K? I wore a down jacket and only took it off for about 5 minutes mid-race. Still, not for a moment did I regret not having RR. I wore lots of layers - some of which got tossed, but an awful lot stayed on - and never really got to a point of truly uncomfortable coldness. The best items I used? Mylar blankets - they're amazing! Bought 10 for $8 on Amazon. And anything fleece - fleece jackets, shirts, blankets; cheap stuff I bought on clearance or old stuff I'd have donated otherwise.

So summer half marathon training was awesome tonight; they had us practicing hill sprints in the Texas sun (finally got near 90 for I think the first time this year).

Has anyone taken JetBlue to WDW? Trying to decide if it would be better to fly with them than to drive if I wind up taking the wife and kid.

Got to ask how did you get this shirt?? was it through disney store or else where? I am signed up for the 2016 Star Wars Half Marathon weekend and would love one of these - just wondering how to get one if it becomes available. Thanks

So, um.... I transferred my half registration to the FULL. Apparently I'm in the 1st Time Marathon Attempt Club now, too :)

Every time I finish a race it's a great feeling, but I'm not sure I'll ever match the emotion of my first marathon. Congrats on taking up the challenge and good luck!

I am a 1st timer too!!! I have already started my training. the earlier the better for me. With kids, their activities and the unknown weather of the east coast I want to be prepared. Good Luck Princess V and all the other runners out there.
