Marathon Weekend 2016

I apologize if this has been asked but I couldn't find the answer. It states that parents can run the Mickey Mile with their kids. Does that mean that I need to register for it, too? Or do I just register DS and on the day of the race I can run along side him?

Just register the kids. Parents don't need a separate registration. I ran with my son this year and didn't need a registration.

Trying for the Dopey will be my fist time registering for any Disney race. Just trying to set expectations. If I am online at exactly noon EST Tue, how likely is it I will get a slot?

We have stayed at AOA for the past two years for marathon weekend with 5 adults: me, DH, 2 sons and DIL. It is tight and privacy is only for the bedroom. Others are on the "table bed" and sofa bed out in the open. The best thing is two bathrooms, which is great since 4/5 of us run and need showers.

I figured it would be tight but not all of us are running, there will be 3 of us for the 5k but just DW for the 10k (though im going with her to cheer) then just myself for the full (though DW is going with me in the morning and the rest of the party should be out on the course somewhere later on) still not sure how we are going to work it though we went ahead and reserved a suite and a single room (they insisted at least for now) now that I think about it it may not be a bad idea for DW and I to stay in the single on the nights before the 10k and full ....that might actually make things easier...ah well plenty of time to figure that out later...next hurdle is actually getting registered

you'll actually want to be ready to go about 11:45 and use the backdoor link posted above it will actually go live a few minutes prior to noon and if you are ready to go right away you shouldn't have trouble getting into dopey, I would guess it will take at least 45-1 hour before it sells out but that's just a guess

Does anyone on here do any non traditional training? It seems crazy to say but the training is so much harder for me to do rather than just saying I'm going to go out and do how many ever miles I decide. I have put in lots of miles before my other runs but I get kind of bored with the constant hours of running that starts to happen as the runs get closer. I would like to do much better this time around than I have in the past. I think I only ran twice over 6 miles and my other runs were 400 or 800 meters and I'm not saying repeats either for the ToT 10miler

Does Disney still use McMillan for their estimated finish times?
I ran a 12K yesterday, and I think my time was good enough to get me under an estimated 3 hour 1/2 marathon.

If Disney uses McMillan for their calculations.

It was a rough 12K, hot, humid, and despite being advertised as flat, mile 3-4 was nothing but a hill. I bet my goal time by 30 seconds, so I'm really hoping it's good enough to move me up even one corral.

If you don't like running, try another sport. Nothing will make you a better runner other than running. Life is too short to invest that much time and effort in something that you don't even like.

It's not that I don't like running I just get a bit bored with the hours of running at one time. The training part of it almost starts to feel like a job compared to just going out for a run that's all. If that makes sense.

I understand and can definitely relate. How do you think I came up with my name?!!!
I haven't taken the time to vary my routine very much either except I try to group multiple races together to help build mileage. Last year I ran a half and then added 7 miles after to do one of my long runs training for a marathon. I listen to music and that helps pass the time. I've heard others listen to podcasts, books on tape, or believe it or not talk on their phones during their runs. Running in a pool seems interesting and different. There's always the treadmill. A friend of mine jogs behind his pushmower for an hour each week/talk about multitasking. Running groups can be fun. Sometimes there are groups that gather at the end for beer or wine.

I've also started working on the intensity of my runs.....working harder but for less miles. Stairs or speedwork are a good way to do this. Or try speedwork stairs for a really intense workout (don't hurt yourself). Yoga, Pilates, Plyometrics are other ways to strengthen muscles without running. Shake it up a little, try something different. Make it fun.

My plan as of right now will be just going on runs whether I do them on my treadmill or hit the road. I will mix in speed intervals and try to put myself on a routine. I usually just go for runs no real distance or speed. Days I don't run I will try to work in cardio workouts. Cardio is cardio right.

Not if you are trying to become a better runner. Only running will do that. If you are just looking for fitness, yes, cardio is cardio.

As for not having a plan - you will also see little improvement without a training plan.

If you are just running to have fun, then no plan is necessary - it helps because it gets you out the door, but it isn't really necessary. The only reason that I am commenting at all is because you said that you wanted to do better this time around. Well, what you are "planning" is not going to get you there. I love running, but improving takes work.

I guess my question is what race/challenge are you planning to run?

I second what @BuckeyeBama has said about running being the only way to be a better runner. It's DEFINITELY been a mental hurdle for me, so I can see what you mean about getting bored. Luckily, I'm in my brain so much that so far I haven't run a race distance that has left me feeling bored. But training runs? OMG. Yes.

@Slogger brings up a lot of great ideas for mixing up your workout routine. When I do my long runs and I'm not necessarily going for time but more for distance, I'll spend my walk breaks checking in on Twitter and Insta. I'm cheesy, so I hashtag my mile marker when I tweet and stuff and I find I get a lot of encouragement from my Twitter friends - so it's a nice boost.

I get it, I have a similar problem where I just plain get bored! Even though I do enjoy running and races. For TOT I was injured so I don't think I went above maybe 7 or 8 miles also. For PHM I stopped at 9 (late start fixing my IT issues from TOT). I haven't had a problem finishing and am currently just hoping to improve my time. What I have found that works for me with cross-training is pure bare classes (if you aren't familiar try searching youtube videos to get an idea, it is more of an upbeat workout) and I am going to mostly follow the Galloway plan. I want to do 3 runs a week, 1 short, 1 speed, and 1 long on the weekend. I did this for PHM, however my speed work was very limited and I didn't start it until the end because I had been focusing on getting the distance down. I kept my short runs to a few miles so I didn't burn myself out it really helped.

I don't know that this is really "non-traditional" training, but I found this helped me when I felt the same way you did. I do think a regime of some kind is needed, but, if you go out one day and are just not feeling it that is ok. As is you going out and feeling like you want to run longer during the week instead. So, you can play around a bit and still get the same sort of work in. Plus, if you have a plan it is exciting to cross off the runs as you complete them and get closer to the race. It can be very motivational.

has as been said already the only way to become a better run is to run, while other exercise may help strengthen certain areas you have to run to improve your running ...I for one enjoy my training as its time for me where I can kind of clear my head and just forget about everything else going on and enjoy the moment. If you find yourself getting bored try finding new places to run, changing up your playlist or even try a run with no music (assuming you listen to music while you run), find a running buddy that will go with you on occasion, try different kind of running workouts like fartleks, interval runs, progression runs or speed runs, or if you like having a goal in front of you find more races to sign up for (I for one am running a race every month leading up to January and my first full)...all of these things may help get you out of that rut

I will be doing goofy when the weekend finally gets here. I've done runs from 5k's all the way up to halfs before and usually my times are pretty much close together. Its looking like I need to pretty much suck it up and get out and put the miles in mixed with a bunch of speed work to get the improvement I'm wanting. I will have to find me an accountability partner I guess. One that understands I do other kinds of workouts as well.

this is the link that @Keels posted earlier...yours is similar but has the "skiplogin" portion in there ....they both may in fact work im not 100%

I logged in just to make sure I remembered my active.com password. On the screen where you enter your address, etc. there's a field to enter "password" about half way down the form. Any idea what that means? Might it be there just to keep people from registering early?

Another method for being accountable would be to post on social media what your goal would be ( Dopey/Goofy/5k, etc) and then update your profiles or tweet out your results during training. Awesome that @Keels posted her 12 months of medals goal. I have friends that upload their RunKeeper or Nike runs online all the time. I think it's great and probably serves as an excellent tool for staying motivated and accountable. Put it out there and you might be surprised how many people will keep up with your training and ask how you are doing.

You could also get a dog that likes to run! Accountability, supportive, nonjudmental partner all wrapped into one. Win-Win for everybody.
