Grey Anatomy

You must not watch Scandal then. Excellent writing, for the most part, now that Kerry Washington is no longer pregnant. Last week, while it as basically a filler episode, I knew Shonda was going to have something happen right in the last 20 seconds. which she always does at the end of the fillers. What happened with Jake had me going, "O.M.G!!!" :scared1: :scared1: :scared1: I was at the edge of my seat. Since the season finale is only 3 episodes away, things are up for grabs for any of the characters.

Sorry, I veered off topic, other than it's a Shonda show. Back on topic now.

Yes, Derek's death was too similar to George. And even the plane crash, when they lost a character that way.

I hated the way Christina left too. I only came back to see Christina leave. As a PP said, I wanted to see her character through to the end. I DON'T need to see all the melodrama of Jessica Capshaw's character, or the shrill overacting of the redhead. (I don't even know her name.) I just wanted to see how Christina was leaving. After all the build up on the commercials, it was such a let down of an episode. :(
I don't watch scandal. I am no longer a Rhimes fan.

I think I quit watching when the bed-hopping got too crazy and they brought in Meredith's sister. Plus did anyone else think they amped up the ahem "romantic scenes" around the time Callie became a lesbian? I don't mean just them, it was like the storyline to a twist more geared towards porn. I stopped watching then so I don't know if it ever got better.

I didn't watch from day 1. I binge watched all of it up to current a few years ago and have stayed caught up ever since.

Watching 7 or more seasons in quick succession really highlighted how much it changed in that time. I think it had to do with keeping up with what it took to remain "cutting edge" on TV at the time.

I'm suspicious that there will be all sorts of dream sequences or something, so he'll still be "in" the show.

There's about 3 more episodes to the end of the season. So they could still have a couple dream sequences or flashbacks to finish out his contract for this season. But, I doubt he will be back next season in any way.

::yes::

I also hated the way Izzy just disappeared. Such a disappointment after so much great melodrama up to that point.

That could have more to do with Shonda not wanting to hear Izzy or George's name again, once the actors left. :p Supposedly, after Katherine Heigl did a couple movies, she really, really, really wanted to be let out of her contract with Grey's to have that fabulous movie career that was waiting for her. She used to b*tch & complain about being on Grey's in between takes, especially to T. R. Knight.

She essentially infected T. R. Knight with her contagion about how bad it was to be on that show, that HE started b*tching & complaining too, and wanted off the show for some fabulous career he'd have being off the show. Never mind that GREY'S is what made them famous in the first place.

Shonda finally got rid of both of them. And doesn't want that kind of negative contagion on her shows anymore. I can understand why she doesn't want to hear either character's names again. Although, as a PP said, it's disingenuous that Meredith would never talk about either of them, especially George. :sad1:

So here's my take:

There had to be some way for Derek to exit the show since Patrick Dempsey's contract was not renewed for the final season. However, the way it was done was really pretty awful! It's bad enough to kill off a popular character. But that episode played on many people's worst fear. A loved one goes off to catch a flight. You don't hear from them. They miss an important meeting. You know something must be wrong. The police pulling up to your house confirms that the worst must have happened. Now this woman is a widow with two young kids (and possibly a third on the way as last week's foreshadowing suggested). I liked the fact that Derek went out a hero instead of leaving his family for some young co-worker in D.C. (although that would have been totally in his character since he left Addison for Meredith). On top of that, the doctor's screwed up the case and he could possibly have been saved. I get that they wanted to give Meredith several layers and issues to deal with, but wasn't it enough that they killed off her husband? Even with fiction, there's a point when enough is enough. If it gets too difficult for an audience to watch, it will no longer be entertaining and people will stop watching. Again, I get that Derek needed to go somehow, but Shonda Rhimes took this one way too far.

I highly doubt Shonda wanted the star of her show to leave.
She fired him and killed off his character. The poorly written episode was insulting to the actor and his fans. This is all about Shonda and HER ego. IMO

BTW...Patrick Dempsey is also a race car driver. How tacky to kill his character in a car accident .

and of a brain injury...a legendary neurosurgeon.

OMG..so glad to see other people feeling the same way that I did about the episode. Yes, I'm upset with them for killing off Derek. But mostly I was upset at the terrible episode :(

1) He just witnessed a horrible accident. There is no way he would put his car across the road and just sit there. And as someone else said...why would he suddenly have cell service?

2) Of course on the drive there were 3 cars all in the same place. Then after the crash, not a single car came by until the emergency vehicles (and as someone else said, no police ever came). Then suddenly a truck shows up at just at the right (wrong) time. And given that they just passed the fire trucks and ambulance, wouldn't that truck driver have been a little more cautious??

3) Meredith didn't call anyone to come to the hospital to see him? She would have had his family there to say goodbye before pulling the plug.

4) Meredith doesn't do anything without talking to Alex first....why didn't she call Alex, or Webber, or her new found sister, or Derek's sister when the police came to her house?

5) If the hospital they took him to was not a trauma hospital, why would the ambulance take him there anyway? They would know where to take someone with that type of injury, even if it wasn't the closest. Wasn't that the truck driver that was taken to Gray-Sloan Memorial? Hum, is it now going to be Gray/Sloan/Sheppard Memorial?

6) The whole lecture to the doctor....just stupid :(

Just too many things were wrong with the episode. I should have been crying at the end since I have watched this series since day one and love Derek's character. But I was too upset with all the plot holes in the episode, LOL.

I haven't seen ANYTHING saying he was fired. In fact what I have seen was saying he choose not to renew his contract.

Right, he wants to devote his time to racing. I never watched a minute of the show, but I know him as a racer. I was wondering at first how this rookie driver/owner has all this top notch equipment, and why is he getting so much attention?

There must be different articles circulating out there. From what I read, Patrick Dempsey was signed on through season 12, which is next season. However, the article mentioned that he was acting like a 'diva' and Shonda didn't like that. So she put him on suspension, hence the DC story line. Then when Partrick Dempsey came back, he told her that he didn't want to stay for season 12 now. So she cut him lose.

Not sure what I believe. Patrick Dempsey, a diva? Really? Anyway, I'm totally pissed about his character's death. I've always said that if Patrick or Ellen P left the show, that I wouldn't watch, and now that time has come. Mer and Der were the heart and soul of Grey's Anatomy, IMO. I can't even bring myself to watch the episode next week for Derek's funeral. Too much to take! :guilty:

For those thinking that Dempsey might be back....not true. He is into car racing and just read an article in which he confirmed that he's done filing Grey's and that was his last episode. Now he's putting all his time and energy into racing. Do us proud McDreamy! :car:

Which one?

Meredith's to the doctor outside - I agree. Who is composed enough after their husband dies to be in "teacher mode"?

The young doctors to the on-call guy for being late - also agree. That was a waste of precious seconds and could have been handled afterward.

Derek's as the doctors were evaluating him - I kind of thought that one was an interesting way to explain things as they were happening. I wouldn't have know they were making a mistake otherwise.

I don't think he's a diva either, If he is he a very quiet one LOL. Most diva are loud and outspoken. (Mariah Carrey) LOL

We taped the first episode last night and look forward to watching it (again) this weekend.

Has anyone heard if this will be the last season for the show?

I'm hoping, loved the show but the last few years have been sad, as in lousy

Well I hated George, Izzy, Denny and lately Derek so I'm not all that sad at all. If they would kill off Meredith and Dr. Robbins and bring Christina back then things would be great....lol

I loved the show till they "bought" the hospital. It has gone down hill since then.

I agree with the PP that said there were too many plot holes in the last episode. But I was still exhausted after it was over, from crying. Not so much because Patrick will no longer be on the show, although I will miss him and his character, but because this kind of thing happens in real life. Someone on life support and their spouse/family has to make the decision to "sign the papers" and "pull the plug." I was thinking "what would I do" if I was in Meredith's position. I know my head would tell me to pull the plug, but my heart wouldn't want to do that. It just goes to show that people should have their end-of-life wishes written out in legal form. A medical power of attorney or something? That way no family member would have to make a heart-wrenching decision like that, it would already be made.

I agree that hopefully this will be the last season for the show. Too many changes, and now with Derek gone, and Christine gone last year I just don't like it as much as I used to. :(

I just watched it, and agree that it was a terrible episode. I still cried, because it was sad. Not Derek dying, but the way he died. I like the show because it's usually so far out there as to be completely unrealistic. Dying of what amounts to medical errors (your own stupidity aside) is just too real.

My biggest question was why didn't he just put the people in his still functioning vehicle and drive them immediately to the hospital? I know you're not suppose to move someone with injuries, but it would have been better than waiting and hoping for someone to come along. I was actually convinced that he was dead the whole time, along with the little girl. The writing made them seem so disjointed from everyone else. I think that would have been a better ending for him.

The one that bugged me the most was Meredith's to the doctor outside. But yes, the one to the on-call doctor was irritating too.

I though that too (that Derek may have been dead the whole time). I would have preferred that to the way it was written.
