PTR: A Spring Fling on the Dark Side ...2 Muggles Celebrate in Diagon Alley!

Hi Gina, we have used Dollar for a number of years and are Express members. With this you just go to the garage, your name should be on the board in the garage kiosk and you just get your car (yes already chosen) and drive away. Details are checked on the way out. If there was a problem, I would just go back to the kiosk.

Your rate seems good as it has cost around $700 US for our July trip for a SUV for 20 nights. We have to get the full insurance package, not sure if you do? This year Alamo were the best rates, Dollar was around $1200 when I was looking!

Can't believe the snow/weather you guys have had out ease :shudder: we had one large dump, but otherwise it's been a pretty mild winter out here. Great deal on the car too! I'm current recovering from ankle surgery so have been spending a lot of time reading Dis TRs, really enjoyed yours!

This winter has been crazy.....so we're two in a row for nutty weather (last winter was also horrible....what the heck happened to the "global warming" everyone feared???). I am hoping that next week brings us the start of a moderating trend. Its time for all this snow to beat it. Seriously.

So sorry to hear about your ankle, but good to hear you are resting and allowing yourself to heal. The Disboards can be good therapy :goodvibes .

Thanks for some positive feedback on Dollar.....I needed that :thumbsup2 . It seems it doesn't get a lot of love on the transportation board at times, but I guess if truth be told, there's usually at least SOMEONE with a negative review of any given rental agency.

We don't need to get any additional insurances, as our Canadian auto insurance policies has a clause that allows our personal coverage to extend to rental vehicles, even within the USA. So that saves us a substantial amount.

I am cringing at what our Christmas rental is likely to cost us.....I'm betting I won't be lucking in on any $114 overall price on that one :rolleyes2 .

The slightly updated plans to date:

Thursday, April 30th:

We will clean the house in the morning (not sure why I am bothering, especially with Jake home all week…..but yet, some ingrained tendency forces me to do so. Old habits die hard), then leave for Syracuse in the afternoon. We will have dinner at Cracker Barrel before checking in at our park and fly hotel, the Holiday Inn Express. Once we check in, we’ll probably just enjoy a swim in the pool and relax. We’ll be turning in early since we’re up before the crack of dawn for our early morning flight.

Friday, May 1st (our actual anniversary):

We’ll grab breakfast at the hotel, since it’s included (having an unpredictable tummy when flying, I will definitely be dining light…..for Steve’s sake!!). While I’m showering and fussing over the final packing, Steve will be the sweet darling he is and grab us coffee from Tim Hortons across the street from the hotel (our last good take out coffee for an entire week). Our current flight time is 7:50 am….Jetblue has now changed it twice, so we’ll see if this is the “final answer” (still plenty of time for another adjustment to occur).

Upon arriving in Orlando, we’ll pick up the rental car from Dollar make our way toward Lake Buena Vista. We plan to try Sweet Tomatoes for lunch (after an early and lighter breakfast, we should be mighty peckish by then, and have appetites worthy of a noontime buffet) then see if we can check in early at the Vistana.

Once we get settled in as much as we care to (not sure if we’ll feel the need to unpack or just drop the luggage and go), we will head to Universal. Even though the parks close early (6 pm) that day for Grad Bash, we will activate our annual passes, purchase our lanyards, activate our PhotoConnect AP, and hopefully enjoy at least a few attractions before they shoo us out. We’ll have one-time-per-attraction Express after 4 pm with our Premier AP’s, so that should help us maximize our time. I’d like to get us some “we’re celebrating” buttons as well from Guest Services.

After the parks close, Steve-o’s request for dinner is Bubbalous’s Bodacious Barbecue. I hear it’s a short drive from Universal, so that’s where we shall dine. After dinner, we’ll enjoy the evening in the pools and hot tubs, perhaps with a fun beverage from the Tiki Bar or Zimmies.

Saturday, May 2nd:

Following a hectic arrival day, we plan to take it easy on Saturday. Whenever we’re fully rested, we’ll head to Waffle House for breakfast (always been on our to-try list, but not yet visited). After breakfast, if the weather is favourable, we’ll take a drive to the coast and soak up some sun and surf at Daytona Beach (the rental car companies must HATE us….all that sand!). On our last trip, Steve spotted a place called “Hog Heaven” just a street over from the beach (they were actually dragging an advertisement for the restaurant from behind a small plane) so we’ll probably grab our lunch there, if for no other reason than it has an appealingly silly name. We may spend the whole day at the beach, or we may head back early enough to catch another couple of hours at the parks to utilized our after-4 pm Express (both IOA and the Studios close early again that day for grad bash….so once again, we’ll be escorted out no later than 6 pm). Dinner is planned for The Knife, conveniently located in the Crossroads just a hop, skip and jump from the Vistana. More swimming and hot tub time in the evening…..something tells me we will need it after all that food.

Sunday, May 3rd:

Our first FULL park day. We plan to be up at the crack of dawn, showered and out the door in time to arrive at the park before rope drop. We’ve opted to do Universal Studios this day…..yep, we can’t wait to experience everything Diagon Alley has to offer. We’ll likely grab a breakfast to go at Vistana’s Marketplace (they have some great breakfast sandwiches) and enjoy our Tim Horton’s coffee (brought from home, brewed in the villa and poured into travel mugs) as we make the journey up the I4 . Lunch will be at the Simpson’s Fast Food Boulevard, and we’re planning on dinner at Finnegan’s. Somewhere during this day, I plan to enjoy my first Flaming Moe and a D’Oh-nut sundae. Steve will be getting his first Butterbeer of the trip. Goodbye, diet. I shall purchase a wand and become the newest muggle-turned-wizard. We hope to spend the entire day, open to close (9 am to 9 pm).

Monday, May 4th:

Today will be Islands of Adventure all day. A repeat from the day prior, we plan to be up and out the
door in time to arrive for rope drop. We’ll grab a quick breakfast to go with our coffee somewhere along the way, likely either the Marketplace or at the park itself. Dining plans include 3 Broomsticks for lunch, and Thunder Falls Terrace for dinner. IOA closes at 7, so if we’re not parked-out by then, we’ll hop over to the Studios for a ride or 2…or 3…or more…before we call it a day.

Tuesday, May 5th:

We have built this in as a recuperation day. We’ll sleep in as long as possible, then have plans to try Ihop for breakfast (their menu looks divine). We have a reservation for 12 noon for the Orlando Eye (it will have celebrated its grand opening the day prior), then we’ll have lunch at Red Robin (which is in the IDrive 360 complex, where the Eye is located). We hope to enjoy some downtime at the resort in the afternoon (read: pooltime) then drive to 4 Rivers for dinner. We’ll either hit up the parks in the evening or just relax at the resort again. We’ll see what we feel like.

Wednesday, May 6th:

A second full day at the Studios. Since we should be rested up again from our less hectic day on Tuesday, we’re aiming for park-open-to-park-close (or close to it). We’ll dine at Leaky Cauldron for lunch and probably delay dinner until after we leave the parks for the day (we have gift certificates for TGI Friday’s that we’ll like use that night….an I’m Sorry gesture from the management of the Syracuse location after a disastrous experience in August 2014). We plan to enjoy some snacks in Diagon Alley this day as well….Butterbeer ice cream is high on my agenda.

Thursday, May 7th:

A second full day at Islands of Adventure. Arriving before park opening and riding the day through to close will be our plan once again. We hope to hit up Mythos for lunch, and Millers Ale House for dinner after leaving the park (IOA closes at 7). Pool time, hot tub, and a Tiki Bar drink are the evening plans.

Friday, May 8th:

Today, we will (eventually) be homeward bound. Check out at the Vistana is 10 am. We are thinking we might head to Downtown Disney for lunch....we haven’t been there in several trips, and we have heard that some of the walls are coming down and its getting to feel less “under construction”. Tentative plans call for lunch at Earl of Sandwich….we want to see if it lives up to all the Disboards hype. Our flight is not until 7 pm, so we don’t need to be at the airport until around 5, so we have a whole afternoon to fill. We may head back to Universal for a few more rides, or to the beach for a few hours, or do some shopping. All I know is that we will do something, because my emotions get rocky if I’m idle on that last day.

If everything goes according to the above- plans, then the following restaurants will be new experiences for us:

Breakfasts: Waffle House and IHOP

In the parks: 3 Broomsticks, Thunder Falls Terrace, Mythos, Finnegans, Leaky Cauldron, and Simpson’s Fast Food Boulevard. Possibly also Croissant Moon and the Beverly Hill Boulangerie (or something similar) for a quick breakfast. And various snack places as well….Florean Fortescue’s, Moe’s Tavern, and Lard Lad for sure!

Outside of the parks: The Knife, 4 Rivers BBQ, Bubbalous’s Bodacious Barbecue, Red Robin, Millers Ale House, Earl of Sandwich, Sweet Tomatoes, and Hog Heaven.

55 days to go!

Your agenda looks awesome!! We were told by my brother in law last time that Millers Ale house was a must do. We never got there but will for sure this time.

Great plans. I can highly recommend Millers Ale House, we go to the one on 192 West and it is great :) Definitely on our radar for July. Sweet Tomatoes was also tasty, they gave us BOGOF even though we didn't have a coupon, so no complaints there.

I've been quietly reading along and empathising with all the challenges you have been facing lately. You are right when you said that you've had more of your fair share, and so I'm sure its been a struggle to be the usual sunny Gina we have come to know on these boards!

Its been an interesting few months...scratch that...many, many months here on the Prairies, too. There have been work, health, leading to mental health
(;)) challenges for me and hubby in the last seven or eight months. Hard to believe that these challenges actually started when we were on a trip to BC in June....gotta take another trip to remove the jinx!! :rotfl:

Now is when the countdown REALLY kicks in for you - eight weeks! You lucky duck. Sounds like you continue to score on lots of deals....I have to start getting busy with scoping out discounts now that we are less than 6 months out. I also have to start chasing son #2 to start getting his passport renewed - his is expired now - he got it for when his grade 11 class took a trip to China. Shows you he is becoming an old man - he'll be 22 in a few months!

Yes, time to get down to writing out all the details that need attention before we head out before the guys head back to university after Labour (yes, in Canada it's spelled L-a-b-o-u-r ::yes::) Day. The only problem is once I start doing that, then I have a harder time giving my full attention to work because it is really easy to let all those trip planning details take over your life!

Guess that's why my name is livingthedream! :lmao:

Gina I am so far behind!! I just wanted you to know we used Dollar on the last trip and it was fine. The agents at the counter did the typical upsell attempts but we stuck to our guns and that was that. It wasn't too bad. It was worth it to us to save so much and pay in CAD. :)

Your plans look great.. and I have to admit I am more than slightly embarrassed that you have everything all planned out and I leave in 11 sleeps and have planned.. well a few things I guess.:rolleyes1

I just haven't gotten into the planning spirit this time! I might steal some of yours:rotfl:

Actually Dh just bought Orlando Magic tickets to go see a game with DS on the second night we are in Orlando. They are both really excited!

This weekend we have a basketball tournament all weekend, next week is busy as heck, and next weekend it is dog grooming, hair appointments and a day of prom dress shopping. I think we will have just enough time to get everything ready and it will be vacation time. 11 more sleeps!

Be sure to sign up to the Earl of Sandwich club. Last year we signed up with all three email accounts and got a free sandwich and a free brownie each, no catch. We absolutely love it there. Dont be put of by the queue if there is one. They are super fast and efficient in there and anyway it will take the queue time for you to decide what sandwich you want!

Your plans look great!

I love the way you plan ALL of your meals. I am so bad at that! I plan one big meal a day but then I wing the rest of them and then we are scrambling and we're all hungry and cranky and start eating junk snacks, and ugh.

Four full days is going to be fantastic at Universal! And so much good food in there, yum!!! I'm glad to see you guys are hitting the sundae and butterbeer on the first day so you can go back for seconds on later days ;)

I'm very jealous of the cost of your car hire! But we wouldn't be without a car so its a necessary cost.

We used Dollar last year and have booked again with them this year. We usually use Alamo and we did miss choosing our own SUV last year. The vehicle they had for us was scratched and we made them take a note of it, but it was fine when we returned it. It hadn't been cleaned properly either as a few days later we found an empty carton of chocolate milk with a date on it from June!! We were there September!!

But all in all Dollar were fine. We just hate the hard sell we get from their reps and we didn't get that from the guy last year.....but I did say quite firmly at the beginning we didn't need anything. He got the message.

We tried to get into Millers in Lake Buena Vista on our last trip, but it was PACKED. Not even an empty space in the lot to park the van!! We now know there's more than one....the I-Drive location is also not far from the Vistana....so we have vowed that we will get it in this trip, come h-e-double-hockey-stick or high water.

Great plans. I can highly recommend Millers Ale House, we go to the one on 192 West and it is great :) Definitely on our radar for July. Sweet Tomatoes was also tasty, they gave us BOGOF even though we didn't have a coupon, so no complaints there.

Well, I didn't know there was one in Kissimmee too....so thanks for that tidbit! Maybe that would be closer than I-Drive if the LBV one is full? I will have to check.

I have heard about that BOGO offer, and I'm going to sign up for their email club a couple of weeks before we leave. Dining down in the States is super cheap compared to costs here at home to begin with, but BOGO is even better!!

Aw, sorry to hear about your personal challenges of late  . I hope things get better for you soon, on all levels. Perhaps the change of seasons will be just what the doctor ordered.

I totally hear you on the trip planning to invade your every thought!! I am super glad that one of my bosses has opted to travel to Orlando during the same time as our most recent trip (last August) and again during the same week as our upcoming May vacation......because I can initiate a lot of Florida talk while at work and not feel bad about it :rotfl: .

You are to a Magic game?? That's so awesome!!! We went to a Magic/Raptors game in 2012 at the Amway Center, and it was so much fun :thumbsup2 (and WAY cheaper than a game at the ACC :scratchin). Its really easy to get to the Amway Center, too....much less stressful than we anticipated. We are hoping we might luck out again this Christmas, and have the Raptors be in Orlando during the time we are, too. We are not so patiently waiting for the 2015-2016 NBA schedule to be released (sadly, it will probably be a while yet).

Only 11 sleeps for you?!?!? Holy moly, you are soooooooooooo close now!

We were planning on signing up for that email club as well :thumbsup2 . I knew they offered a free sandwich, but didn't realize you got a sweet treat too (lol, not that my waistline is going to need it by that last day :rotfl2:). I am looking forward to giving it a try. If we like it, we plan to take the kids there in December because Sweetie has yet to experience Downtown Disney (or maybe it will be officially Disney Springs by then? I'm not sure).

Your plans look great!

We're not very good at quick, immediate decisions....planning where to eat on each day, in advance, helps us have to think less while on vacation (when our brains have tended to shut down a bit as it is  ). It also allows us to make sure that we get all of our must-do's in as conveniently as possible.....yep, we like to be "efficient" while having fun. We are so lame!!

I'm very jealous of the cost of your car hire! But we wouldn't be without a car so its a necessary cost.

Oh, gross ....that milk carton would have really wigged me out. You would have thought the darn thing would have started to smell in the summer heat!!!! I will be sure to check under the seats before we drive away...just in case  .

I am so grateful to all of you whom have given me such positive feedback on Dollar....you have really helped me feel better about the car rental. So, thanks to the bunch of you :goodvibes . I think I will stop stressing and second-guessing. I know a few of you mentioned a hard sell on the insurance.....has anyone done their skip-the-counter program? Dollar Express, I think its called?

We were supposed to have Dollar Express, but it came up with error when we went to do it so had to go speak to a real human being.

We will try it again this year as we'll have been awake for 16-17 hours by time we get to car hire desk.......really don't want to be dealing with hard pressure sales people. But as I said to be fair, when we said very clearly we didn't need anything at all in way of upgrades the Dollar guy was fine and apologised for the DE not recognising us.

But, I know plenty of people who have used it and it's been fine.

You are doing really well with your plans. I made a good start making Adrs for Disney but have abandoned it just now until I have more time to work it all out. Ordered my Universal tickets last night so at least that's another thing ticked off the list.

Good to hear :thumbsup2 . I also have no problem saying NO....and meaning it! (nicely, of course.....polite but firm ::yes:: ).

Yay for ordering your Universal tickets! It feels good to tick something off the to-do list, even if its nothing major. Progress is progress!

How many days of admission did you buy? Did you get them from UT? (I had heard they still had some left that did not reflect the recent price increase)

52 days!!! We’re narrowing the gap :cool1:.

I have looked at the crowd projections from Touringplans (our last day of vacation became available on the site this morning, so now I can see our whole time period), and I’m really not sure how to interpret them. Orlando Informer has all but the Friday/Saturday and final Friday as “slow” and the Fridays & Saturday as “moderate” (expected for weekend dates which are early closure for Grad Bash). Touringplans appears to show higher crowd predictions…..and I say “appears” as I can only guess if I am interpreting them correctly .

Fri, May 1, 2015 US - 5 IOA - 6
Sat, May 2, 2015 US - 6 IOA - 6
Sun, May 3, 2015 US - 5 IOA - 7
Mon, May 4, 2015 US - 4 IOA - 6
Tue, May 5, 2015 US - 5 IOA - 6
Wed, May 6, 2015 US - 4 IOA - 6
Thu, May 7, 2015 US - 4 IOA - 5
Fri, May 8, 2015 US - 5 IOA – 6

We have four full park days planned….those are bolded.

Now, 5’s and 6’s don’t sound bad to me, really, but seem to be more “moderate” versus the “slow” projection of OI. Slow, I would think, would be 4 or less. But hey? Who knows :confused3. I can’t say I have ever used Touringplans as a reference before so perhaps I am a bit off in my interpretation of the numbers. I guess time will tell!

In other news……
It’s +2 and sunny here today :beach:, with a balmy +7 projected for tomorrow (and highs above freezing all week….fingers crossed!). If the weatherman’s original promises hold true, we should rid ourselves of a substantial amount of snow by the end of the week. Can I hear a halleluiah from the crowd?

I also learned over the weekend that Jetblue will be releasing their fares on Sunday through to January 4th, 2016. I am wanting to get that aspect of our Christmas trip taken care of, but after seeing Westjet’s initial Christmas fares ($900 pp, return, from Toronto for nonstop) I must admit I’m rather anxious about what the cost will be :scared:. I may not sleep Saturday night. Please keep your fingers crossed for me….with the current exchange rate, I need these tickets to be somewhat affordable.
I managed to get our taxes dropped off to our accountant late last week, so that’s another thing I can cross of my list (I expect we can get them signed and e-filed by mid-week at the latest). This is the first year I haven’t done Jake’s myself…..with his college expenses, I wasn’t entirely sure of what education tax credits he was entitled to. I must say, its been rather nice having someone else wade through the message of receipts and make sense of it all.

I was thinking today that I should soon start making my final-weeks to-do list. Things like adding a US package to our cell phone and notifying the credit card companies of our travel dates at the one week point, sending in our Diamond Lane requests at the two week point, etc. I like having my thoughts down on paper so that I can still function when I begin to suffer from vacation brain .

I think those crowd levels look great! Just looking at Easywdw's calendar for May and he is showing 4s and 5s. Those are for Disney but Universal sort of goes along with that barring any special events IME. I think you're in for a good week. You have the Express Passes for after 4 pm too I think?

Yay for ordering your Universal tickets! It feels good to tick something off the to-do list, even if its nothing major. Progress is progress!

How many days of admission did you buy? Did you get them from UT? (I had heard they still had some left that did not reflect the recent price increase)

I looked at different options for tickets but ended up buying Universal 2 park 14 day tickets. We are definitely going for 2 days but I'm also hoping to do the evening of arrival day and an extra evening. A ticket company I've used before price matched with a 5% code from another company. This meant I got each ticket for £119.40. At this stage I only needed to pay £40 deposit. This worked out cheaper than buying the 2 day with 1 day free offer from Undercover Tourist.

Looking forward to going back to Universal as we haven't been since 2011. My son is looking forward to getting on all the big coasters. He enjoyed Manta and Kraken when we were at Sea World 2 years ago so he should have a good time. I've told him I'm really looking forward to us all going to see Barney so we can sing 'If all the raindrops were lemon drops and gumdrops'. Somehow he doesn't seem too keen! Anyone else want to join me? "Standing outside with my mouth open wide ..."

:flower:

Following along! We get there the day you leave, but it will be fun to read someone else's plans for the same time of year

Wahoo to no snow, only rain and sun this week. I think the expected crowds seems fine. Do the not so crowded things until your express pass feature is active. I'd try to do at least one rope drop, just to see the park when it generally is the least crowded.

It's creeping up day by day. I am patiently waiting for SW to open for December too. Kinda not sure the rates, but what I've seen so far, I am not impressed. Just dropped my rental car by $30 by cancelling and rebooking. So, I will keep hoping for lower and lower rates. At least I know the most I will be paying.

Hi Gina,

Just catching up on your latest plans. I'm so so so glad you and Steve are going to 4 Rivers. You (and especially Steve!) are going to LOVE it. I took my husband there for lunch one day after he started working in Downtown Orlando, and he almost drooled right on the tray!
