Hi and Welcome! This is my pre trip report for our upcoming FL vacation. I’ve never written a TR before but I have so enjoyed reading about other people’s experiences that I thought I might give it a shot!

After the winter we’ve had, we really really really can’t wait to get out of here and head for warmer climes. We live a few miles north of Boston and have been hit hard this year with one storm after another. I doubt we’ll see our front lawn before April. I’ve been keeping warm and trying to avoid cabin fever by planning and researching our upcoming vacation and hanging out on the DIS forums.

About us: I (takes a deep breath) just turned 50 last week. Eek! Well, I read that 50 is the new 30 and that is aok with me because I don’t feel a day over 25. I work full time and am a photography hobbyist (Nikon all the way!) and a sometimes travel hacker. DD12 (aka Boo) is an awesome kid and a great student. She loves to travel and is very crafty (which she definitely did not get from me) and she is very into “design” (as in mentally spending my money on redo-ing her room). She’s at that very awkward, sweet/salty, tween bipolar stage where she is a full on independent teenager with a badittude one minute and a cuddly and so loveable child the next. My mom73 (aka The General when she is unhappy with someone) is mostly retired but still keeps a part time job to stay busy and socialize. She is a bundle of energy who will NEVER admit to being tired even if she is sitting there snoring. We three travel together fairly often. Mom had never been to CA, so last summer we had a girls road trip and spent 10 days driving from San Diego to San Francisco. We had a ball but it was a very busy trip. This year I promised myself (and them) that we would take some time to sit on the beach and do nothing so we are heading to the FL Keys for 5 days of relaxing and soaking up the warmth. We plan on snorkeling, sailing, exploring and dining our days away. Not sure if I should post much about our Keys days here but if you’re interested, let me know and I’ll plan to add some details.

Of course, the Keys will be great but the vibe there is way too laid back for us to do more than a short visit so Boo and I will be dropping mom off at Orlando airport on 4/23 and heading to the Royal Pacific for 4 nights/5 days of parks and rides! We are also thinking about going for it with 1 epic day at WDW MK to see the new stuff and get our Disney fix as we haven’t been there since 2010.

Mom and I have been to WDW 4 times (twice in the 70s when I was a child) and twice with Boo (at ages 4 and 8).. We all went to Disneyland last summer on our CA trip. We are seriously talented users of the old FP system so I’m curious to see what FP+ has to offer.

I “discovered” Universal last March on a weekend getaway with my friend T who moved to St. Pete a few years ago. We stayed at the RPR and did some very leisurely no kids touring. I enjoyed our time at UO so much that we made time for U/Hollywood when we were in CA in June – Boo and I had so much fun! The General was not impressed (Simpsons on an empty stomach was a mistake) so she has decided to opt out of all future theme park vacations.

In November, Boo and I met up with T and her niece15 for a stay 3 night at the Hard Rock over Vets Weekend. T hooked us up with the FL resident rate once again so we had express pass. I ended up buying APs for Boo and I because we knew we’d be back at least once more before the year was up. Surprisingly Boo, who is not into coasters all that much and who doesn’t like anything creepy scary, is a serious Mummy fan and would happily ride it over and over the whole day. I love it too but even with full dose Dramamine, 2X in a row is my limit. Luckily for DD, T will ride again and again with her while I take pics outside and enjoy a well earned minute without motion! I have a favorite ride too. We’ll see if you can figure it out after reading the TR!

As for HP, T and I both have read all the books and are fans but not omgwishiwasawizard fans. I love how the WWOHP at UO really brought the books to life – it’s truly amazing. Every tiny little detail is perfect. Boo has not shown much interest in HP outside of the parks. We read book #1 together when she was 10 but she was just tolerating it for me, lol. She has seen the first 2 movies but finds Voldemort scary creepy so has been reluctant to watch the rest. She enjoyed FJ and Gringotts quite a bit though and we used the SR line to go back for 2nds and 3rds each time.

Most of our Orlando time will be spent at Universal so I’ll be posting my trip report in the US/IOA Trip Report Forum but will link to it on the WDW TR page when/if I add our MK day.

Next up: Hacking our way to FL and back… well, almost!

Thanks! Going to be running around all day with Saturday errands and Boo's busy schedule. She's got a friend's bday party then bball game after that and of course we haven't picked up the gift yet. I hate to just give a gift card but I know that's DD's favorite thing to get so we'll probably just take that easy route. I hope to post more about our plans later tonight.

Joining in on the fun...sounds like a great trip. I always wanted to visit the keys...maybe one day when I pry myself from Orlando :flower1:

I like gift cards too at least you know the recipient will get something they enjoy.

Here are a few pics from our November trip. I only brought my little point & shoot Sony as I wanted to really be in the moment for DDs first time in the parks and not get too caught up in my photo hobby. It was nice to just go with it but there were so many times I wished I had my Nikon that I am determined to bring it with me this next trip. I'll try to get some better people shots this time around. Most of the family rolls their eyes and hides when I take out my camera and they run for the hills if they see me with my tripod.

I second the motion about the dragon picture at night! Great photo! Another Nikon wannabe photographer here, and hope to improve my photo-taking abilities before our trip at end of August! I get what you mean about how others run for the hills when the camera comes out (or at least there is a mental groan! :lmao:), but mostly everyone is patient with my need to take photos. You should consider posting on the *Universal photo of the day* sticky! I was just there encouraging others to post more regularly so we can all have real images to help us look forward to our upcoming trips!

Your time in Universal is closer than you think! I hope you and your DD have a fantastic time together!

Happy planning! :wave2:

Hacking our way to FL and back!

I’m always interested in any way to save money when traveling but only if it doesn’t take away from the experience. I don’t want to bring my own lunch to the parks or stay at the cheapest place possible but I am all for finding discounts or promos to get the best value for our $. I also make a point to earn multiple credit card points or miles for just about every dollar I spend. On everything. All the time. I pay for everything with a credit card, even if I’m just grabbing a pack of gum. I have 1 rule: everything gets paid in full every month, no balances = no interest = free stuff.

If you’re not interested in travel hacking or ways to save, you may want to skip this post as you’ll probably find it very boring! I used credit cards points and miles to fund a significant portion of this trip. Collecting points and miles through bonuses and strategic spending is a hobby of mine that I’ve been involved in for about 4 years. We’ve gone on a bunch of “free” vacations using the points and miles that I’ve accumulated. Alas, due to my lack of Loew’s points, this trip is a combination of points and cash bookings.

Our flights: I recently used credit card sign up bonuses and a hotel points transfer to hit 110,000 points on Southwest which earns me the SW Companion Pass good through December of 2016. The Pass is not just a onetime use bonus, it’s a reusable perk. From now until the end of 2016, DD or another designated companion can fly free with me on SW every time I fly (even when I book using points). I used some of the points I’d accumulated in getting the pass to book the flights for me and Mom. Boo will be my companion so only needed to pay the taxes and fees for her flights ($5.60 each way). We’re flying into Fort Lauderdale on Saturday night, 4/18. I’ve recently decided to try to move that to an earlier flight time and have been stalking SW website waiting for something to pop. Mom is flying home alone to Boston out of Orlando on Thursday 4/23. There were no direct flights from FLL so the General is taking the ride to Orlando with us so she can fly non-stop and not have to deal with a plane/terminal change. She’s a bit directionally challenged and would probably end up missing her connection. Boo and I have a flight out of MCO on Monday the 27th that connects via Atlanta. The biggest con with using SW is that there are very few direct flights to/from Boston to FL (or anywhere we travel for that matter) but the savings we’ll get using the companion pass means that we will be flying SW quite a bit for the next 2 years and we can live with the 1 stop flights.

Rental car: No points or miles to use here this time but I was able to use my corporate discount at National to get a great rate even though it’s a one way rental and I found 2 different National coupon codes that I could apply to save another $25 (thanks Mousesavers and Flyertalk). I have Exec status with National so I book a Full Size and can then choose anything from the Executive Aisle which typically has some SUVs and nice-ish vehicles available. I’ll settle for a full if that is all I can get but that has never happened. Boo prefers an SUV when it’s 3 of us so she can have a better view from the back and I’m used to driving my Pilot so that works for me.

Hotel in Key Largo: I used my Hilton points to book us at the Hampton Inn Key Largo for 5 nights. Because I have a Hilton Amex card, I get 5 nights for the cost of 4 when using points to pay. I accumulated most of the Hilton points through card bonuses and the generous point multipliers on the Amex card. Hilton points are notoriously easy to earn. I try to use the “earn and burn” philosophy with hotel points since you never know when they will devalue the program. I have Gold status with Hilton (another credit card perk) and that usually gets us free breakfast and a room upgrade. Breakfast is already free at Hampton Inns and there really are no club rooms or any suites so I doubt we’ll see an upgrade but we’ll get a nice room location and usually they provide bottled water daily and snacks on check in. With Hiltons I've found that you really get so much more at the lower end of the brand like Hampton or Homewood Suites. I love the look of the nicer Hiltons but once you're out of the lobby and up to your room, that thrill is gone. Boo loves Hampton Inns (she’s oddly fascinated by the lap desk that they provide) and the General loves a free breakfast so I’m fairly happy with our choice. I had originally booked the Hilton Key Largo Resort hoping to get a nice suite upgrade but I got scared off by the many recent bad reviews on Trip Advisor. Anyone stayed there and loved it? Please chime in so I can obsess over whether or not I’ve made the right choice LOL!

Hotel at Universal: Booked the APH rate at RPR for 4 nights. Not thrilled about paying for parking at the resort but the cost of keeping the car + parking is less than paying for transpo from the airport to RPR and back. Besides, we’ll probably head off site for at least 1 dinner and we’ll be able to stock up on water and snacks before we check in. And, if we go forward with our plan to go to MK on Friday, the car will come in handy. I was tempted to book at a hotel where I could use points for the first 2 nights to save some money and, because we might be at WDW all day/night on Friday, it seemed a waste to pay for the Universal deluxe. I briefly considered the Dolphin to get the 60 day FP window and the closer proximity to our plans for Friday but in the end, after getting some good advice on the WDW resorts forum, I decided it would be more relaxing to get settled in at RPR on Thursday and head over to US with our EP.

Tickets: We have our APs from the November trip for Universal.

So… this trip is not totally free but definitely a lot of free! Airfares during April school vacation week from Boston to FL run over $800 pp for the prime flight times. I'm using about 50,000 SW points to get the 3 of use there and back. A decent value considering the price gauging that all of the airlines do during school vacation weeks in the Northeast. I'm sure those in other parts of the country see the exact same thing. I picture some airline execs sitting around a laptop anxiously hitting "refresh" awaiting the release of the coming year's school calendar so they can triple the prices to go ANYWHERE during those dates. The Hampton Inn pool view room is $289/night before taxes so a nice cash savings but no great points value. As I said earlier, I am not one to hold on to points waiting to get the “best value”, I’m more interested in using them up and having fun with Boo whenever the opportunity arises!

I looked but I don't have a single pic of us together from the November UO trip! She was in a "no pictures" mood. We usually grab a few selfies at least but if we did they must be on her phone. I have not mastered the selfie, DD is much better at it than I am (so proud). One of her Christmas gifts was the selfie stick. She uses it to hold her iPhone while she makes videos of herself doing whatever. She wants to be a videographer some day. Or own a puppy day care. Or be a scientist. Or a teacher. Here's a snap of us from last year's CA trip.

If you hung in there through all of this, wow – congrats! And thanks for reading. If you have any questions about the travel hacking techniques I used to get the SW companion pass or the hotel points, feel free to ask. None of it is secret or shady - just a bit of work, a lot of research and OCD like organizational skills.

Next up: To Disney or not to Disney, that is the question!

To Disney or not to Disney?

The thought of going to Orlando for the 3rd time in a year without a visit to WDW is hard for me. I’ve always associated Orlando with Disney. Even though we have never been the “go every year” Disney family, we are Disney fans and really enjoy the WDW experience. I can’t get the idea of a 1 day visit to MK out of my head. I have been wanting to go back to see the new Fantasy Land expansion.

Also, I feel like Boo and I have never been there just the 2 of us and I’d like to go and take things at a slower pace. Our last trip to WDW when DD was 8 was definitely a bit too commando. We (me) were determined to do it all and we certainly did. We visited every park except AK twice. We resort hopped from POP to AKL. We went to Sea World. We picked a pearl. We spent a morning at Blizzard Beach. We did the Fantasmic dinner package, the TSM and Soarin RD stampedes and played the FP runner game. It was so much fun but exhausting!

This past summer while in CA, we went to DL for 1 day and it was a mistake. Not enough time to see/do what we wanted in a nice way and way too many rides down during our visit. It was disappointing and left a bad taste in my mouth about Disney which I really want to wash away with a nice, unrushed day at MK.

Boo and I had a discussion last night about whether or not we should “do” MK on our trip. I told her if we do it we are not going to make it all about the rides – we can get plenty of that at US/IOA with our EP. If we go we’ll do RD (because let’s face it –duh!) and spend that time riding her favorites but once it gets busy it will be more of a sightseeing and exploring type of day. I was thinking we would head back to RPR for a swim/shower/dinner break about 2pm and have our 3 FP+ reservations for after dinner/early evening then we could end our night with the MSEP and Wishes.

Is this a crazy plan? Am I just repeating the mistake I made at DL last year? If you’re bored you can read about our disastrous visit in that hotly debated thread here: http://www.disboards.com/threads/a-very-disappointing-visit-results-of-my-email-to-dlr-7-9.3299079/

Really torn about this but I think if we hadn’t had the bad DL experience, I would not even hesitate.

On the other hand, we have never been to WDW during the holidays and I was thinking of using my points/miles to book the Dolphin for a long weekend in December and surprising DD. Should I just wait until then? The clock is ticking on this one, need to decide before the 30 day FP+ window opens. That leaves me just over 2 weeks to make a decision. Would love to hear your thoughts on this!

Just heard from the mom of one of Boo's classmates. We had talked about Universal a few months ago at a fundraiser and she was asking about age ranges for the rides. They're a very nice family that we know fairly well from church and school and Girl Scouts functions. They have a very sweet girl Boo's age and 2 younger boys. Well, it turns out that they are going to be at Universal and staying at RPR the same dates as we are! We're going to try to meet up for some rides or pool time and maybe a dinner while we're there. Boo will be very excited when she finds out! It will be nice for her to have a chance to ride some rides with her friend and it will be nice for me if she has someone to swim with since she always wants more pool time than I do.

Since they're keeping the Universal stop as a surprise from their kids, I can't say anything to Boo until after we get there. She can NOT keep a secret at all.

Got lucky yesterday and found a price drop on SW for our flights down. I'd been stalking their site trying to find earlier flights into Ft. Lauderdale so we're not driving down to Key Largo in the dark. Everything has been extremely pricey since it's a school vacation week here in MA. Found a reasonable price on a flight the day before so we can stay over in Ft. Lauderdale and get a mid morning start for the Keys. Love the flexibility of the no fee flight changes on SW! Booked a night at the Hyatt place in Ft.L.

Feeling much better about that part of our plan now. DD will be missing 2 days of school, the one before and the one after vacation. I'm OK with that since she is an A student and has only missed 2 other days this year.

Yay for price drops! :thumbsup2 We have often had to travel during school vacation, too, and - for obvious reasons - this is usually the most expensive time to fly. I agree that if you are willing to fly a day earlier, you can find more availability and cheaper rates. Good for you! :)

The first time we travelled with the boys to WDW they were 12 and 14. It was during that time before Christmas break when schools are often focused on Christmas pageants, etc., and so I did not feel guilty about taking them out because they were not missing as much as they would have throughout the rest of the year. They were both A students as well.

As you can see by my signature, we aren't going until the end of August (after the boys are done their summer jobs but before university starts this year). I've got my flights and accommodations (RPR) booked. Now its time to focus on the smaller details!

Snow was melting today, so that sure makes it seem a lot closer!!!

Glad you got it so you don't have to arrive later in the day and then drive at night. Makes for a MUCH more relaxed trip!

Happy planning! :goodvibes

Lots of melt here today too! We may just see some lawn before April. It would be nice not to have snow on the ground for Easter. I was talking earlier to one of the parents who run the girls softball league and he doesn't expect to be able to get the teams out on the fields until the end of April because even when the snow melts, it will be a muddy mess out there!

I'm envious of your December trips. Every year I say we are going to get there and then December is such a busy time for us that we can never fit it in. This year could be the year!!!!

Just did a crazy thing and booked the WDW Swan for the first weekend in December! I decided to get something reserved before all the award rooms were booked up. I can always cancel if I have to :( Won't know for sure if we're going until I see the SW December schedule and maybe not even until September when DD starts 7th grade and we see what her standardized testing schedule and school workload looks like as she'll have to miss at least 1 day maybe 2.

:wave2:

Fancy meeting you here!

Just read your intro and I LOVED it!!!

I am also a mom who just turned 50 with a 13 year old Jeckyll and Hyde! I live north of Boston, too (I suspected north-er than you)

You mentioned your milestone birthday and although you are not omgodiwishiwasawizard, I thought you might appreciate this anyway:

Gandalf 50.jpg

We did a single-mega-13-hour-day at the Magic Kingdom in the middle of our first Universal trip. It was spectacular!!!

We also visited Disneyland this past summer (July)

I am snorkeling fanatic and would love to hear more about your upcoming trip to the Keys, especially the Under the Sea part!!!

:fish:

OK, caught up on the rest of your posts.

I LOVE that first picture of the guitar fountain. Very cool!

:worship:on your SW companion pass and your other travel hacks! Wow!!! Just wow!!! It's obvious you put a lot of planning and research into your plans.

What awesome news about your daughter's classmate. That will be a cool surprise for the other family, and for Boo!

Good news about the new SW flight.

:goodvibes

 Welcome!! Love snorkeling too and DD is pretty good at it for her age. I'm still working on our plans for the Keys. Trying to keep it loose since our vacations are usually structured. Looking forward to seeing how we handle a more casual itinerary. We're not much for laying around the pool so I'm planning to have some ideas of what we might like to do and then play it by ear each day when we're there. Hopefully this will work out. It kills me not to have reservations for everything lol! Totally against my nature.

Some possibilities:
Parasailing. I've been a few times and love it. DD wants to give it a try, Mom is not a heights person so not for her.
Jet ski tour of the mangroves. This looks like fun and Mom says she would be up for driving a jetski. She's having a YOLO type of attitude lately.
Snorkel catamaran tour to the reef.
Swim with Dolphins (if we decide to do this it will need to be reserved in advance)
Drive to Bahia Honda beach (7 mile bridge, nicest beach in the Keys)
SUP boarding in manatee bay - have never tried this before

I'm so glad to hear that you had a successful 1 day visit to MK. Did you take a break or power through the whole 13 hours? It's open 9-11 the day we'll be going (it's pretty certain at this point). I was thinking of scheduling a dinner at one of the monorail resorts instead of a break back to the hotel but I am not a big fan of the WDW restaurants and couldn't find anything that looked good.

I was reading some of your Hawaii TR the other day and am very interested in your opinion on HHV. We are hopefully heading back there summer 2016 for Oahu and Big Island and thinking of booking at HHV and HWV. Your TR reminded me of how much we loved loved loved Waikiki Beach and everything about Hawaii. Why oh why was I born in New England? Tom Brady's handsomeness can only compensate for so much...

Too funny- that is exactly what we did for our one day at MK (July 2011). We were rope drop through watching the fireworks from the Contemporary parking lot. We took an early dinner break at Kona to get out of the heat and off of our feet. We came back refreshed, and we also had Fast Passes because that was at a time when they didn't expire. We were pretty commando that day. If you want to read about it, I have links from that day in the second post of my Welcome Foolish Muggles report. ;)

Your Keys plans sound awesome. It was weird going to Hawaii without many set plans, so I know how you are feeling, but it is the best way to have a go-with-the-flow vacation. We loved the HHV- especially the boys. There are lots of things to do at the resort, all of the activities we wanted to do were nearby, there were lots of dining options (even though we didn't always make the best choices). Plus, Fireworks on Fridays!!!

We were a little less enthusiastic about Hilton Waikoloa Village, but we were only there for one night and it was at the end of an exhausting 2 week vacation, so that probably tainted our opinion. It was too big and it tried too hard to be like Disney, down to being "Welcomed Home" and getting a welcome message telling us to have a magical stay.

I know- New England- love it and hate it. I'm more of a Wilfork girl myself. Hope we keep him.

And I'm a huge Doug Flutie fan. Don't get me started! :cheer2:
