Parents of the High School Class of 2017/College 2021

Michaels wants $100 plus to put one together! I'm heading to Hobby Lobby, apparently they have ribbon specific to our tiny school, which is hard to find.

My kid is applying to Berkeley, UCLA, UCSD, UCSB so far. He might add Davis. Those are the only ones we are familiar with as of now. His principal told him to consider UC Davis as well.
Why all the California schools? I get from your username and all the mum talk you're from Texas.

He hates Texas. I don't blame him. My husband is in technology and I teach pre-k, so if our kiddo ends up in Califonia we might join him eventually. It would be an easy move for us. I'll have to change my user name!

Thanks for the responses. My son is looking at 12 & I thought that was a lot but he does have some higher up reach schools so it makes sense to apply to a few of them.

Housing is my #1 fear in San Jose. I could easily pay more for housing than I would for tuition. How are they considered a 5 year schools? Are their graduation requirements harder?

That's awesome! My DD also wants to be a PT. UNLV was also on my "long list" and I'll look at Reno too but like I said upthread my DD just told me this week she wants to stick closer to home.
My DS applied to UNLV's grad PT program and didn't get in. He applied to 10 PT programs all over the country, got into two. As I have gotten to know many of DS's former classmates, all now PT's, I can tell you their undergrad backgrounds are VERY diverse. DS had a basic BS, his girlfriend has a BS in some sort of Art, several friends had health science degrees as well as some athletic training. Getting into PT school is harder than med school, the public schools are about 3-3.5 years, DS's private was 7 trimesters but no long breaks, he went year round for 2.25 years, also the private schools are very expensive. DS's Doctorate of PT cost him close to $150K after housing etc. Go as cheap and close to home on the undergrad as possible, that is my opinion having just gone thru it.

The grad requirements are not harder, per what friends have told me and my SIL confirmed, the UC schools are so full that the kids have a hard time getting all their classes to get out in 4 years.

Austin Tink, I forgot about the small private school part - hope you find that ribbon! My DD also hates Texas. We moved here from the west when she was in 8th grade and she is just dying to get out of here. Feels it is far too conservative and hates the heat! Personally, having lived in California half my life, I have no desire to deal with the state taxes etc. Northern Nevada was a nice compromise, close to the City, the coast etc but without the mindboggling taxes and bureaucracy that is the state of California

I've head that PT school is very hard to get into which was why I liked Nova Southeastern and their dual admission program. I've been searching for more of that kind of thing closer to home.

One of the schools on her short list is the University of Wisconsin La Crosse which has an excellent PT program so I hope that their Exercise and Sports Science department would be good. It's $15K per year including room and board and she's be able to swim there no problem. We have about $100K set aside for her so that would be nice for her to have $40K for her PT program.

I appreciate you sharing your knowledge with me on the subject :).

Robin, have you visited UW La Crosse yet? We really liked it when we visited. It's high on DS's list, especially given Madison and Minnesota are so selective. And it's not too far from home. There is a college fair at SPHS next Thursday 9/22. I can send you a link if you are interested - tons of Wisconsin and Midwest schools.

Yes! That would be perfect :). I'm hoping that we can schedule a visit. I know a lot of grads and EVERYONE I talk to about UWLAX loves it.

We are working on homecoming mums today. I helped a friend do two on Friday, but I make my boys help. So, while the freshman is making a mum, the others will be writing essays. They are not sure which is worse. LOL

My dd just texted me to say she was called down to the principal's office. She's a National Merit commended scholar!

She missed being a semi finalist by a few points. If we lived in about 30 states besides NJ she would have made it.NJ, along with Massachusetts and DC, has the highest cutoff score.

Sorry for the brag. I'm just so proud and happy.

@robinb I had sent you a PM with the link on Friday - hope you got it!
THANKS! I meant to PM you right away but my weekend was super busy. We'll be there tonight. I'm going to scan through the schools and see which ones might be a good fit for my DD and focus on those.

Whoops. It's on Thursday not Tuesday. My DD will be bummed that she's going to miss her team's weekly pasta party :(.

Too bad about your DD missing the pasta party. We are going to make a list of schools to focus on too - there are way to many to go into it without a plan. We've never been to a college fair, so hope its worth the time. It sure is a big selection of schools..

DD's September 10 ACT scores were up on the website. She got the same as last time, so I think we'll call it good and not try again. I haven't gotten an email yet, but checked the website just in case. So if anybody else is waiting on scores, log in and see if they're up.

DD bought her homecoming dress and shoes over the weekend. Now we just need to find the white Convocation dress and white shoes. Do your kids' schools do Convocation? It's a big cap and gown event in the Fall of senior year. And it's in the morning. I have to take the morning off work to attend. My DS's school didn't do it.

She's been taking practice SAT tests, but her scores on these are going DOWN instead of up. It's really stressing her out.

My DD's went back down. I had a feeling the whole forgotten calculator thing was going to throw her for a loop. She improved her Science score by 1 point but all the other scores went down from last time (math A LOT). The 1 point in Science will make her superscore round up by 1 point, so there is that. I'll going to have to make note of which colleges accept a superscore. It's still not high enough for some of the programs she was looking at and that's disappointing.

She did ask me to sign her up for the SAT next week. I paid the late fee and I paid for the full results to be sent back so she knows what's wrong. She is getting some studying in but I think she thinks that it's going to be like the ACT. We may also just be done after this one and work with the scores she has if she's not going to put any time into preparation. I'm tired of throwing good money after bad.

No Convocation here. I've never heard of that.

I was thinking we were all set for Homecoming with the dress and her prom shoes, but Sunday night she said she could use a bracelet since she doesn't have any jewelry for her outfit. We live 45 miles from any major shopping, and weren't planning on going this week, so I said we could check Shopko and the consignment shop. But yesterday I stopped in the chiropractor office to pay DH's bill and there was a table in the corner of jewelry their daughter had made to sell. It was really nice and there was a white and royal blue bracelet, like her dress, so we got it.

(With DD15 it was shoes that we realized this weekend she didn't have till I remembered I got her some silver sandals on clearance at Delia's a few years ago that she never wore. They fit and she likes them with her dress. Phew!)

Today was Opposites Day at school, and DD17 and her BFF won 1st dressed as Joy and Sadness from Inside Out. DD has the Joy dress from Hot Topic. Not sure what her friend wore, but we got a pair of big round blue eyeglass frames on Amazon for her. I'm hoping she has gotten a picture taken so I can see how they looked.
