Missouri provides most of the oak used for wine & whiskey barrels in Europe. Specifically, there is an area South of Cuba, MO roughly 40 miles across that is said to produce the absolute best white oak on the planet.

North Dakota is the only state with a state owned bank. We also produce more honey then any other state.

Chicago

Our river used to flow backwards~only one that I know of. Granted it was reversed intentionally and we have fun fishies like Asian Carp taking over, but hey, now Chicacgo will re-reverse the river as needed so you never know what you're gonna get, lol
Our state is currently #2 for people moving out ~ wait, that is neither odd or interesting..nvm
oh and we used to have the only post office you could drive through but they closed it

oddest thing is that I still live here :headache::sad2::sad:

Someone asked me this yesterday, so it's fresh in my mind.

Boston is called "Beantown" because in colonial days, they couldn't cook on Sundays, so they'd make beans on Saturday and leave them warming in a bean pot, or crock, in the fireplace until Sunday. Indians had taught them about beans, but they made them with maple syrup, from trees. Colonists used molasses in their beans, and also served them with brown breads. (Yum, still popular here today.) Boston also produced a lot of rum, made from molasses as well.

Interestingly enough, there was a great flood of molasses in the North End of Boston in 1919 that killed 21 people and dozens of horses, and made a huge mess that took weeks to clean up, when a storage tank let loose and molasses flooded part of the city. http://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/molasses-floods-boston-streets

  • Pennsylvania is not a state. It's a Commonwealth.
  • "sylvania" is Latin for "Forest Land". Pennsylvania was a land grant given to William Penn. Penn's Woods: Pennsylvania (See also: Transylvania -- "through the woods")
  • "Pennsylvania Dutch" are actually German (Deutchland), not Dutch.
  • Philadelphia was the first capital of the United States.

Mountain Dew was invented here.

Jack Daniels (supposedly) died from kicking a safe.

Uhhh...moon pies and goo goo clusters.

Largest freshwater aquarium in the world (if you haven't been, go now. Right now.)

Texas:
Dr. Pepper
Shiner Bock Beer
Bluebell Ice Cream

The Confederate submarine H.L. Hunley had its beginnings in my current hometown
Texas still owns all of its public lands. If the federal government wants to create a park or cut a stand of timber, it must first ask the state’s permission.
Texas was an independent nation from 1836 to 1845. When it was annexed in 1845, it retained the right to fly its flag at the same height as the national flag.
Camels were imported into Texas twice in the 1850s by the U.S. War Department in the belief that they would be handy animals to use during the Indian Wars--The came into the state in Indianola..close to where I live.

Not that exciting, but it's illegal to pump your own gas.

We were just in NJ driving back from my husband's family's house in NY (we live in TN), it was so incredibly bizarre to me to see people at gas stations and the attendant who pumps your gas for you. Lol. I asked Bill, but he couldn't give me a good reason - WHY can't you pump your own gas? What's the reasoning?

Wisconsin ...

* The sundae was invented in Two Rivers.

* Madison has a yearly Brat Fest where over 200,000 brats are consumed over 4 days.
* WI has over 1200 cheesemakers who make over 600 varieties.
* Wisconsin Dells is home to the largest water park in the US.
* The QUERTY keyboard was invented in Milwaukee.
* There is a unique spy-themed restaurant and bar in Milwaukee called The Safe House.
* At one time yellow colored margarine was illegal in the state.
* Wisconsin is the leading producer of cranberries, harvesting 60% of the nation's crop.

Not my state, but a fun fact I learned yesterday, courtesy of Trivia Crack: The state sport of Maryland is jousting. According to Maryland.gov, jousting became the official state sport in 1962, and Maryland was the first US state to designate an official state sport. Bonus fact: Maryland's state team sport is lacrosse.

OK, I got another one. "Cable tv" was invented by John Walson in Mahanoy City, PA in 1940.

Walson owned a GE store and was trying to sell TV's, but the area he lived had a problem getting Philadelphia tv stations due to it's location. So, he installed antennae on the mountains and laid calb.e

I think it's because it is considered dangerous here (but not almost every other state). It's silly, but I don't mind a bit!

The Yukon Gold potato was developed at the University of Guelph (in Ontario, Canada) where I work.
The name "Toronto" means "meeting place."
