Marathon Weekend 2017!

Hey guys, I did the marathon this weekend and I made a video so I am posting it here for anyone who might want some motivation to sign up or might need info on preparing if this is their first runDisney event.

It was my first time using my GoPro and editing so hopefully it came out alright if you decide to watch it.

And, I certainly hope to be joining you guys again next year. If I go I may be in for Goofy or Dopey.

For those who are pretty sure it'll be Dopey in '17 for them- will you do any other races that year?
I'm pretty sure Dark Side Challenge will be a one-and-done for me (I swore off any half-marathons after March 1 down here after my last HOT one in late March - but helloooo, Star Wars?! gotta get through it once), so Dopey and W&D may be my only rD races next year. I'm sure I'll do one or two local races, though.

Speaking of, when you do Dopey, you get a medal for each race and a Dopey, but do you also get the Goofy medal since Dopey includes a Goofy?
Yep!

For those who are pretty sure it'll be Dopey in '17 for them- will you do any other races that year? I kind of want more medals so maybe I'll do another challenge later that year on the opposite coast. Holy Bling Batman. That'd be a lot of medals.

Definitely Disneyland. Between my husband and I and our best couple friends, we've decided to make that an annual trip ... hoping to add some other couple friends and their kids in for 2018!

We'll see how I like the "lady weekends" at RunDisney, but I think after this year, I'm only committing to Marathon Weekend and Disneyland for years going forward.

I love the term "lady weekends!!!" I prefer Marathon Weekend and Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend over the "lady weekends," so I'd choose those too. We're doing PHM this year because the timing is so much better for our kids' school schedule and they usually want to run at least some of the events with me. The only reason I hesitate to commit to the 2017 Dopey is our teens will need to miss the first few days based on their own extracurricular activity commitments. But the full marathon is so fun and so rewarding that I can't pass up Dopey again!

Races in general, absolutely! Disney races, maybe. I had such a great time doing my "Almost Dopey" this year, I've got to go back for the whole thing!

WDW is much more convenient for me than DL so after completing C2C this year, DL probably won't be feasible next year. That just leaves SW:DS and W&D since Princess leaves me flat. I'll be chaperoning a Europe trip for my wife's high school at spring break so SW is out. I guess it'll just be Dopey and W&D in 2017.

Same here! Additional Disney races are a maybe. I'd love a coast to coast, but we travel to non-Disney locations frequently and I think we need to bring it down to just one Disney-themed vacation per year. But other races are a definite! After the 2015 Disney Marathon, I ran a bunch of half marathons and 5Ks, a 10K and did a sprint triathlon. I plan to do the same this year pre-2017 Dopey.

My racing schedule (and yes there is a difference between racing and just doing a run for me) so far for the year is London Marathon, a late spring/summer ultra, and a fall marathon. And by racing I mean going for time. Though how much I race London and the ultra are contingent on how well and quickly I heal from my coming surgery.

Races that I am doing for fun: two 5Ks in late Feb/early March. Pixie Dust Challenge, Dumbo Double Dare, and Infinity Gauntlet Challenge. I used to do some Disney for times but I am moving away from that now after the heat/humidity meltdown on the Marathon leg of this years Dopey.

There is a half I am also eyeing in late March but whether it falls under for time or for fun is going to depend on healing.

And yes I am looking at Dopey in 17 again. For something that was so exhausting I had way too much fun doing that.

My wife, who's a teacher, and daughter have a late winter break this year and I noticed that they will be out of school for the week of the 2017 Walt Disney World Marathon.

It was hard on my daughter when I left for three days to do "just" the marathon in 2015 (She's a fourth-grader with perfect attendance since she started school and won't entertain the notion of missing a day or two of school - even for Walt Disney World), so I didn't think Dopey would be a possibility. But with she and my wife out on break, it looks like a good chance that we'll be making a trip to the World next January. The plan is for me to do Dopey, my wife to do the 5k, and my then 10-year-old daughter to do the 5k, 10k and Mickey Mile races.

I got to experience a bit of the holidays for the first time at Walt Disney World when I came for the marathon but the rest of the family hasn't been outside of summer. We'll probably come and spend a couple of days before the events enjoying the atmosphere before the 3 a.m. wake-up calls begin.

We've got a trip planned for Japan and Tokyo Disneyland this summer and the thought of doing another big vacation just 5 months later is a bit overwhelming but the timing of it all with the later winter break makes it too hard to pass up.

FYI - for those not following the Disneyland Half thread - during early registration there was a new change to PoT. PoT submission is required for anyone expecting to run a 2:45 or faster half marathon.

Joining the party to allow myself the small indulgence of contemplating that we might be in for marathon next year. The temptation is too real, people! :hyper:

I've never done a DL race but I've heard the corral breakdowns are very different from WDW (and that there's a lot less space to set up corrals.) Maybe the changed PoT requirement is meant to improve this situation?

It'll be interesting to see if this is implemented for WDW, too. This is how it worked back in 2013 and at least some of 2014, before they reduced corral sizes and added more corrals at WDW races. Everything old is new again, lol?!

If it wasn't for rundisney and the bling I wouldn't be a runner.

Here, here! The runDisney bling is what got me started in the first place. Who knows what I would have done otherwise.

... Anywho's. I'm guessing we'll keep this thread going through registration and beyond. Thanks to someone who pointed out the ? in the title. Fixing that now and I'll see if I can swing some time between jobs to get some pertinent information in the OP as it becomes available.

I have decided that I will most likely sign up for the 10K on marathon weekend. I have to change my life and while it isn't as dramatic as the marathon for me a 10K feels as hard as a marathon. I have a lot to learn about the process of even signing up, training, etc... I will be picking your brains over the next few months. Hopefully you all don't mind.

The 10K was my first race. I hope you do it, it is a lot of fun!

Good luck! I attempted my first 10K in 2014 and, after a great start, ran out of gas and walked most of the second half. Last year, I trained more and did a 7 mile race in July. It went really well and inspired me to do my first half-marathon that October. Now, I'm planning on doing my first full marathon down at WDW next January. It's a great feeling to find that your body is stronger and more capable that you might have thought.

My plan is to do the 10K marathon weekend. My current aim is the Wine & Dine 5K, the marathon weekend 10K, then the Glass Slipper Challenge for PHM weekend. We'll see how my motivation is! Baby number 2 is due in a few weeks so I'm hoping I'm not too exhausted to get back into training in the summer!

If you are planning a full marathon I am guessing it means you are loving running now? It's cold here in CT but I got out and walk 3 miles today. My eating has improved. I have 80 lbs to lose but I am hoping by the time I get to the 10K I will have a lost a decent amount of it and the race will be more possible.

I keep reading about proof of time on various race specific threads. Do I need to worry about this for a 10K?

Nope. No proof of time required for the 10k! BUT - it's a great chance to get a PoT for your first half marathon! :D

I'm running more out of a motivation to a.) see just how far this body will take me and b.) eat whatever I want and not see to many ill effects. I do find it a little addicting now, not entirely sure why. But, it relieves stress and makes me feel better about myself.

Good luck with your weight loss. Try not to get hung up on a number and more on just feeling healthy and happy. Set small goals, obtainable goals along the way and feel good about achieving them.

The 10k course is great IMO! Running down the Boardwalk is a lot of fun!
