Disneyland and Eastbound Panama Canal (AKA Patricia who??) **Complete**

Cozumel

Up at ready to go by 7:30 when we headed to deck 9 to take in the views and have some hot drinks and bananas from Goofys Galley for breakfast and filled up our water bottles to take with us. We then headed to studio sea (1st time we had ever visted in 3 cruises!) to check in for our excursion Caves, Caverns and Paradise Lagoon. Here is the blurb from the Disney website:

Swim and snorkel among the fishes and impressive rock formations in Playa del Carmen's mystic natural swimming holes.

Explore the freshwater lagoons of a Playa Del Carmen and learn about their place in Mayan culture and natural history.

On this adventure you will...

· Embark on a 45-minute ferry ride to Playa del Carmen on the Mexican mainland.

· Meet your eco-guides and walk approximately 5 minutes to your air-conditioned mini-van before taking a 40-minute drive south to 2 natural cenotes. Cenotes are natural water formations caused by sinking limestone bedrock. The Mayan culture sometimes used cenotes for spiritual rituals.

· Hear about the history of these impressive rock formations and enjoy a refreshing snorkeling session in the crystal clear waters.

· Travel to a unique natural aquarium where you'll have approximately 45 minutes to snorkel among a variety of tropical fish and colorful marine life. Note: This is a freshwater lagoon, not a typical aquarium with sea life in a tank.

· Arrive at a beach club for a Mexican lunch and complimentary beverages. Here, you can relax, enjoy the sunshine or take a swim at the beach.

· Take a short ride back to Playa del Carmen where you will board your ferry back to Cozumel.

Take note of that explanation, it’ll come in handy later ;)

Once we were all assembled we were taken down to the ferry to the mainland (Playa Del Carmen). As we were waiting to get on the ferry it absolutely poured down so we were wet before we even started!

The ferry is a bumpy ride, I do not get any motion sickness but I felt queasy on this and there were a lot of green faces onboard! It was a little funny seeing tanned legs, arms and necks with very white/green faces (not for them though) when we were getting off we passed a lady who had a bin next to her and several sick bags!

Back on the safety of land we started to queue up to be put into groups for our trip. There was a slightly unpleasant start to this, we were queued up and one woman and her husband marched to the front and ended up joining the front of our group (the 2nd group) her sister and brother in law quite rightly joined the back of the line and joined the 3rd group. We were led to our minibus and all the time this woman was going on at the guide asking when she will meet back up with her sister. The rest of our group were getting a little irritated and felt sorry for the guide as he was trying to explain there were 3 groups and we may not meet up with them until later, all the while trying to organise with the other guide so the 2 sisters could be in the same places at the same time at least. Keeping your personal group together is the responsibility of you, yourselves alone. Perhaps she should have done that instead of worrying about being the front of the group.

We got on the bus and Hector, our guide, started going through the days itinerary and as soon as he mentioned snorkelling guess who got very upset – uh huh – She kept saying she had not signed up for snorkelling, nowhere did it mention snorkelling, she wasn’t doing it. I don’t know if you noticed the blurb above? A whole 30 minute mini bus ride of this and the rest of the group were starting to get annoyed with her passive aggressive loud comments we felt so sorry for Hector who was really getting it and trying to organise us meeting up with her sisters group so she can go with them. It clearly states it is a snorkelling trip!

On arrival at our fist port of call she chatted with her sister and flat out refused to take part. She was told there were benches by the lagoon so she at least had something to look at but no, she chose a bench in the car park instead. Her sister tried to talk sense into her but I think it was just one of those instances where she had gotten herself so wound up she couldn’t back down or make the best of the situation. She was there and had to wait for us to finish so why not go paddle your feet and take in the beautiful lagoon?

However, it was a fantastic ice breaker for the rest of us!!

The rest of us headed into the lagoon which is a natural aquarium with both fresh and salt water and a variety of fish. Our camera didn’t pick up a great deal – those fish are fast! - but we did get some shots and hector kindly offered to take pictures of us (this is rare, these things usually supply a photographer you have to pay for the photos!)...

We spent about 40 minutes in the lagoon, the pictures don’t do justice to how pretty it was. It was chilly in there but there were little pockets of warm water which were nice to swim over.

Hector managed to arrange for our unhappy companions to be picked up by another bus from their company and now we had nothing but good vibes for the rest of the day!!

On our journey to the next stop we were given water, bananas and cookies – enjoyed these after a small breakfast!

Next up was a journey to some caves where we would snorkel through stalactites and stalagmites. It was a lot cooler here but the water was crystal clear, like bottled water. It was quite dark though so the pictures aren’t the greatest

http://s1291.photobucket.com/user/S...1-4935-9888-5df54ea13f95_zpsgegzcawv.jpg.html

We also saw bats which was cool.

After a while we got out and started our journey back to Playa Del Carmen where we went for some food and mojitos all in the cost of the excursion. The mojitos were good, there was a lot of food to choose from and it was all pretty good.

Then back to the ferry

Look at the colour of that water (those are fish you can see)

I can honestly say this is the best cruise excursion we have ever done and it was worth every penny! Might just spend some time exploring Cozumel next time though.

Back in our room we were greeted with a very sad bit of paperwork

Evidence the end was nigh

And we watched a storm from our balcony

We then headed to the show. Originally it was supposed to just be ‘JUNK’ from England who are a stomp type group. However, 3 pallets of their equipment was stranded in Florida and they had been unable to get it shipped to Mexico so they had spent the day looking for new equipment on the ship and in the surrounding area. The result was that heir show had to be cut short and it became a variety show. First up was Barry Allen – a man who has dedicated his life to being an Elton John tribute act – we thought he was awful! So glad we didn’t go to the full show earlier in the week. Then we saw magician Shawn again before JUNK. I will say we thought JUNK were very very good, especially considering the circumstances and that they only had a 30 min practise with equipment they had never used before!

After the show we went to the Promenade lounge for a drink and spent a long time chatting with a Gent and his granddaughter who had been on our excursion earlier. We enjoyed our chats but it did make us a little late for dinner – oops.

During this time the Gingerbread house was unveiled

Tonight was the Toy Story menu – I truthfully was not looking forward to this, I had looked at menus and was not impressed, nothing stood out to me and I was going to skip it but Carl wanted to go so we did. We kept it light with just 2 courses (no pics again I’m afraid) I had the Pork followed by the bubblegum ice cream and I again was pleasantly surprised. Carl had steak followed by White chocolate and raspberry truffle cheesecake.

We went to Wavebands for the hilarious comedy of Maryellen Hooper – check her out! Then we stayed around for the game show – 4 CMs on stage and 1 female + 1 male guest from the audience. Anthony asked questions and whoever was closest to a CM would win. It got a little risqué at times but was a lot of fun and the girls won!!

After that we returned to the room where we got not one but TWO special treats –

I didn’t know if I were more excited by the limited edition picture or the extra hour of sleep!!

We also had a little booklet of facts about the cruise

http://s1291.photobucket.com/user/S...9-4f18-8eae-654885fcda61_zpsofbgcyo9.jpg.html

The beginning of the end – a final day at sea

This was a busy day at sea but it is really nice to have the last day as a sea day so you can get organised for departure. We were up at 7:45 as We HAD to have breakfast at Tritons – this is actually my favourite breakfast location and I cannot believe it took until our last day to get here – I had visions of going for most of the trip – but we were busy in the mornings and my cold had made me value sleep a lot more highly!

We both ordered English Breakfast teas. Carl had the Mornin’ Tug Boat (Strawberries, bananas, almonds, raisin granola and low fat yoghurt)

Followed by the Breakfast Trio (French Toast, Belgian Waffle and buttermilk pancakes served with cinnamon butter, syrup and whipped cream accompanied with Bacon)

I had the Mango mountain hike (Mango, honey, granola and low fat yogurt)

Followed by my favourite – Eggs Benedict

It was all very yummy and even now I am still disappointed we didn’t go more often! I think I will make a point of doing it on our first sea day on the next cruise!

We then headed to the last Stacia Martin show which was about the music Disney used at the 1964 World’s fair and the lost music of Mary Poppins – it’s great how those tunes were repurposed for the likes of the Jungle Book and Bedknobs & Broomsticks. In fact the whole “Beautiful Briny Sea” section was originally intended for Mary Poppins.

We did a little shopping then I went back to the room to get on with packing whilst Carl went for a swim.

At 12:15 we had our last tasting – Chocolate tasting – which was $35 each and really worth it. It was all about how the tastes changed with different complimenting foods

From L-R we have Champagne which was paired with white chocolate and tasted better together. I have never liked Champagne or white chocolate but now I know I do as long as I have them together ;). Then a Lasseter red wine which was paired with a white, a dark and a caramel chocolate. The chocolate really changed the taste but I found the Dark complimented it best. Third is one of my favourite drinks – Port which we had with Parmesan. Then we dunked the Parmesan in Dark Chocolate to have with the port – it was all great!! Finally was a single Malt whisky which is usually $45 a shot or $700 a bottle which was paired with dark chocolate. I don’t usually like Whisky (DH is a whisky lover) but surprisingly I enjoyed this a lot more without the chocolate – it was smoother and less burning in the back of my throat.

We were a little lucky – the table next to us didn’t turn up so we had some extra port and whisky passing on the rest for the other who wanted it. I left Carl to settle the bill and headed to guest services to see if there was any chance of signing up for the 2pm mixology (we were a little merry and wanted to continue) but it was fully booked – I really wish we’d done it earlier! When I got back to pick up Carl the sommelier who ran the tasting – Jonathan – topped up our champagne. We definitely got our moneys worth with this tasting!

We left the Cadillac lounge around 1:15 and headed up to deck 9 where there was some ice carving happening

http://s1291.photobucket.com/user/S...5-453e-8116-de41a995ad58_zpsuzsqya8p.jpg.html

Sorry, we didn’t see what it became as we were hungry so headed to BBB They had a curry station in the centre and DH loves a curry. He didn’t love this as it had fish and he hates fish He also had a soup and some rib and apple juice

I had a lobster roll, mussels, crabs legs, baked tomatoes and a salad of leaves, olives and mozzarella again with apple juice

We then went in the pool for the last time it was a little chillier today so it wasn’t hard to drag ourselves away for Disney tunes trivia. We changed our dirty mugs for clean ones to take home and each had a glass of wine

We got 44 out of 45 this time!! And still no winners medal! Oh well we tried.

I put on the last of our clothes washing – It’s so much nicer to come home with a case of clean clothes and only having to put them away when you get home rather than cleaning it all. Instead of waiting around for it to finish I always set an alarm on my phone so we could go and do things in the meantime. We went for a walk and used up some Arcade credits Carl had bought earlier (I don’t think I mention this so clearly a gap in my notes – sorry about that!)

http://s1291.photobucket.com/user/S...5-451b-8276-e5eac6fc28dd_zpstoapxqch.jpg.html

Here’s a breakdown of the pricing for anyone who may be interested
http://s1291.photobucket.com/user/S...4-4c24-90f1-b07aebc35b64_zps4oqbgt8d.jpg.html

We went to shoot some hoops

Before picking up our washing and finishing packing the case. We then opened our last bottle of wine and hung out on the balcony watching the sunset and talking about the trip

We then headed here

For our last time this trip. The show tonight was Dreams, Carl was not a fan but I thought it was nice. Not great but nice.

We had ordered one photo from shutters we had been told would be available after 6 so we went to pick that up

***I haven’t uploaded this but it is a picture taken by a photographer of us on the back deck in the pouring rain going through the locks***

Then back to the room to put the photo in a case and put the cases out ready for collection

Our last meal was in Tritons and it was the till we meet again menu

Carl had the Chicken Consomme, which he was not a fan of, followed by the tandoori Lamb which he loved

I had the Potato and Goats cheese napoleon which was nice but not great

Followed by the Beef Wellington which was a little dry

We both had the baked Alaska for dessert

I liked it but Carl was disappointed.

We were then introduced to our chefs for the cruise
http://s1291.photobucket.com/user/S...b-4bf4-a6c4-0e31b471f309_zpswhasbost.jpg.html

And then we had the waving of the flags which signifies and celebrates the diversity of everyone onboard
http://s1291.photobucket.com/user/S...d-40ce-8a49-0e92c088882e_zpsylybetx0.jpg.html

And then we said goodnight to Milton and Kenan

Excuse Miltons unDisney pose – I’m sure he didn’t realise. I think I mentioned this before but Kenan was by far the best server we have had! He is training to become a main server so look out for him and if you see him say hi from me.

I finally got my photo of the mural at the back of the restaurant

http://s1291.photobucket.com/user/S...3-461c-b1ab-b431966abd93_zpsasze3a8i.jpg.html

We then headed to Wavebands where we saw a second Maryellen Hooper show which was funny! And then our Entertainment team did a very funny goodbye show “If I were not upon the sea”

http://s1291.photobucket.com/user/S...f-46a5-b935-83d158d03108_zpshgkjks75.jpg.html

And then we called it a night.

:sad1::sad1::sad1:

No navigators today as we are getting off!

I also have no notes and hardly any pictures – It’s really hard to want to keep this up on the very last day but I will try harder next time. This is all from memory and over a month ago so forgive me if it’s a little lacking.

We woke up in the Port of Galveston

It’s not the prettiest port in the world.

A nice thing about 2nd seating dinner is that you have a later breakfast on disembarkation day. Breakfast is also available at BBB or with your servers usually in the dining room you were in the night before. We headed back to Tritons for 8:15

http://s1291.photobucket.com/user/S...a-4383-94e3-ef46c5f006b5_zpss0kxiw7i.jpg.html

http://s1291.photobucket.com/user/S...8-43c4-b9b0-537153c02516_zpsqy5fzfba.jpg.html

I didn’t get a photo of the food as we were busy talking with our servers and the next table but we both ordered English breakfast tea and the Route 66 (Scrambled eggs, Bacon, Sausage, ham and hash browns) I don’t know if I mentioned this before but I wasn’t a huge fan of the scrambled egg throughout the whole cruise.

We had Mickey Tickets meaning we were one of the last groups to get off. We hung about a little while

Before finally being called. When we got off we were held in a little waiting area before being let through to the hall with all the luggage. There was a huge queue to customs so I joined whilst Carl got our bags and we waited, and waited and waited. Galveston is the worst place I have had to go through for customs. All of the Americans were sailing through with loads of stations open for them but anyone from outside the US had to watch these people sail pass them while they waited in an area that was really in the way it was poorly run for non Americans! We had actually done an onboard booking for a cruise out of Galveston for our anniversary in 2017 but we thought it was run so poorly we moved it as soon as we got home!

For the first time we booked our transfers through DCL and this ran quite smoothly. We were on the bus and shown Disney shorts and advertisements

http://s1291.photobucket.com/user/S...8-48b7-afb3-bb7a5c09d0f7_zpsp7xhcfij.jpg.html

Our flight was at 3:25 and I was worried we’d have hours at the airport waiting to board. Because we were waiting so long at Galveston we only had a couple of hours where we both read.

The flight was fairly uneventful and we picked up some lattes from Starbucks when we transferred in Amsterdam.

We arrived back in Bristol just before 10 and it took hardly any time to get through to wait for the bus to take us back to our car. We stopped and did some shopping on the way home and were back around 11:30. Home sweet home.

I really enjoyed reading your trip report!

We're doing our first cruise next August, the Disney Wonder to Alaska. If we all like cruising in general (DH is humoring me by doing the Alaskan cruise--he's interested in the Alaska part, it's the cruise part he's not so sure about.), the Panama Canal one sounds interesting as a possible future cruise, maybe once the kids are off to college and it's just us...as we can't pull the kids out of school for more than a couple of days at their age. (middle school and high school.)

Thanks for reading! It's really nice to have some feedback and know there are some people out there enjoying it and maybe even learning from it a little. I wanted to get through it quickly as we are of to Italy next week for Christmas. I have 2 more final updates to get up by the end of next week.

We were a little apprehensive when we did our first cruise and now Disney cruising is an addiction! - we had no idea what to expect, if we'd like it and my concern (until this cruise) was DH being bored on sea days. He's the kind of guy who likes to be doing stuff and whilst I am quite happy to lie by a pool and read in the sun all day I was concerned for him.

Firstly we love cruising. Secondly I really needn't have worried!! as there is plenty to do if you want. We have also learnt less than 7 nights onboard isn't worth it for us (although I may do a 4 night on the Dream as it may be the only way we get to experience her). Alaska will be a great one for the 1st cruise! It's top top top of my list but DH only wants to cruise in the heat so I have to work on him a few more years.

on the other hand my SIL went on her 1st cruise with her soon to be parents in law with another company and didn't enjoy it as much and has decided she wont cruise again until she is much older. I think who you cruise with and which company you go with make a huge difference and Disney just have the special touch for us! Next Year will be a completely different experience though!

I can't recommend this cruise enough and I am already trying to figure out when to do it again. Next time we will do Westbound though as it's usually early May and my birthday is May 8th ;)

Do you tip for the wine tastings and mixology? I've never done either.

We did but not everyone did. With the alcohol there is a 15% gratuity automatically added so there is a tip regardless. However, we enjoyed them so much and thought Wawan and Jonathan did such a great job they deserved a little extra. It wasn't a huge tip but it was something to show our appreciation.

We are at a bit of a disadvantage as Europeans as Tipping isn't really done here unless the service is beyond expected and really deserved. So we never really know when or how much is expected of us. We hope everyone was happy with what we gave :confused3

Awwwwww sad your TR is over :( It was so great, thank you so much!!!

Our 2nd cruise is round trip from Galveston and now as a non-American you have a me a little worried about customs lol But to be honest after the DISASTER that was customs in San Diego (on the ship no less, not even in port) I have a feeling Galveston will still be better. Will just make sure to book an even later flight than they suggest!

I'm sad too but I am glad I have this to look back on. and you're very welcome, I have enjoyed writing it!

Honestly the people who were running the transport outside said it's usually much much quicker so perhaps they were just having an off day so I will keep my fingers crossed for you! If you are happy to pay for a porter you will get through more quickly too :-)

I have heard San Diego can be a bit rubbish on disembarkation day, hard to believe when boarding went so swimmingly (apart from our very minor glitch) so also bearing this in mind for the future...

I enjoyed your TR! We did the EBPC in 2012 and loved it so I read all the TRs to relive it. It seems (from our experience and from reading TR) that the repo cruises when it is the first time arriving at a port is often poorly done and unorganized. We also did the WBTA that ended in Puerto Rico and disembarkation was a disaster! But the round trip cruises from there didn't seem to have as much trouble. :confused3 Anyway, thanks for the memories!

Thank you for reading and you're welcome! We really loved it too so hopefully it won't be too long until we can go back! Interesting note on the repo cruises. Perhaps we will monitor other reviews and make a decision next year sometime.

Thank you again for your trip report! I really enjoyed reading it! ::yes::

I'm glad you enjoyed it, it makes it all the more worthwhile writing it on a public forum! thank you for reading :-)

7th November – a bonus update with a little history lesson and local culture.

As you know we were back just before lunch and we didn’t do a great deal for the day, we don’t sleep on overnight flights, so we just chilled out and caught up with some TV and had to grovel to the cat for forgiveness for leaving him for three weeks

Now I will give a little history lesson if you will indulge me… (If not skip through to the next teal writing or pictures)

… in the 1500s the Church of England broke away from Catholicism and Rome under the rule of King Henry VIII, who wanted his 1st marriage annulled and the Pope would not allow it. In 1534 Henry was declared the head of the Church. In the 1550s his daughter, Mary, renounced the title placing the Church of England back under Papal Jurisdiction. When Elizabeth 1st came to the throne she reinstated the title and her Father’s wishes. There were unhappy Catholics and a few battles before it was finally once and for all decided when the English civil wars came to an end when the last Roman Catholic monarch, James II, was deposed in the 1680s.

On the 5th November 1605 an assassination was due to take place of Protestant King James I by a group of English Catholics who then wanted to replace him with the Catholic head of state. The idea was for them to blow up the house of Lords during the state opening of Parliament.

News of this “Gunpowder plot” was sent in an anonymous letter to a Baron William Parker in October before the scheduled date. Around midnight on the 4th November, during a search of the house of Lords, Guy Fawkes was found guarding over 30 barrels of gunpowder and arrested. Most of those running the plot fled London and several made a stand. Any caught survivors, including Guy Fawkes, were convicted in the January 1606 and sentenced to a pretty gruesome end.

Within a few days of November 5th the day became known as Gunpowder day (now Bonfire Night or Guy Fawkes day) and it annually stood to be a reminder of what was set to take place AND a warning of what would happen if it was attempted again. To this day we still celebrate the failure, usually with a bonfire and a burning of an effigy of Guy Fawkes. These days we also have fireworks. There is also a rhyme which dates back to the 1700s – “Remember, Remember the 5th of November, Gunpowder, Treason and Plot, I know no reason why Gunpowder Treason should ever be forgot”

Why am I telling you all of this?

Well in my newish hometown (we have lived here since 2008) and the surrounding towns, they do something else to celebrate Guy Fawkes Day. There are a series of Carnivals. There are many Carnival clubs who work all year on the theme for their cart/display. It is a hobby that is a major part of people’s lives, they design the theme, build the carts, make the costumes, choose the right music, and act the parts. There are tableaus which are carts with people just staying still in a set pose for the 2-3 hours they are on the route, there are carts where people are dancing to the same song all the way around. There are individuals who make costumes and walk around the route.

It is quite the spectacle and the work that is put in by these people as a hobby astounds me so I wanted to share some of our local culture with you.

This year’s Carnival was on the 7th November, the day our flight landed. It is a night time carnival and we were tired but we wanted to check it out and support our local community – we usually go once every other year.

We didn’t stay all the way through as we were cold and getting tired but here are some photos for your enjoyment:

Sadly the lights weren't working on the next cart. Ironically the chosen song was "The show must go on" by Queen

One of my Faves was this Lego one with lots of children involved

This one had a Batman villain theme (and I believe was this years winner) The large discs spun around and swung from side to side

The last one we saw was a club one of Carls friends belongs to (I THINK)

There were a lot more entries, I believe over 100 and it usually occurs over a few hours and is finished with squibbing which is around 150 people holding fireworks at the end of poles. This is very unique to Bridgwater and is not something you should try at home kids! Here is a picture I have found online (since we didn't stay) to show you

Final Thoughts.

Air

  • Flying with KLM – I would happily do this again and recommend it. For us it meant a saving of over £500 ($750) but even without the saving being able to get to Bristol Airport or back in 45 mins is so worth it, compared to 3-5 hours from London, when we don’t sleep on flights. Perhaps we don’t need to fly out quite so early next time though. It was no better or worse than any other airline we have flown with, the food was what you’d expect. We always fly economy as we’d rather use the money it would cost for upgrades elsewhere.

Land

  • Arriving in LA – We tried to pack a bit much in on that first day which did affect us later. Next time we will get a slightly later flight and arrive mid afternoon, pick up a car, check in and have some dinner. We don’t need to make any plans for future arrival days when we have long flights.

  • Car Hire – we hired with Alamo and I booked the car quite a few months out. However, I booked it without payment and cancellation upto the day of collection. I then checked back periodically to see if the price had gone down. If it had I would cancel the previous reservation and make a new one. By the week before we left I think I had done this 3 times and saved well over $100 from the original price.Would we have a convertible again? Yes if budget allows. It was something fun and different for us.

Anaheim

  • Condo – Perfect! We would stay here again in a heartbeat and would highly recommend it! It usually took us 15 minutes from leaving the door to being in the parks. It was more than large enough for us and I think it would be comfortable for a family of 6. It sleeps 8 but it may be a little too cosy with that many, I suppose it depends how long you are going for. It was clean and comfortable.

  • Disneyland – We have decided we much prefer Disneyland over Walt Disney World. The Cast members were nicer and seemed to enjoy their jobs, there may have been a small hiccup to that here and there but that happens everywhere. There are more rides, I prefer the flow and the theming and I would say California Adventure is my favourite Disney Non Magic Kingdom Park. We liked having Downtown Disney right there if we wanted a break from the parks. I wish we had let ourselves have a few more days here. It’s possible we will let WDW take a back seat and try and get out to California a little more in the future. (I’ll have to keep wishing on that star ;) )

  • Restaurants – We loved Cheesecake Factory! But we have decided we don’t necessarily need to eat at the main restaurants in the parks next time. I may do a WOC meal again as our view was perfect but otherwise we may do more quick service next time, eating when we are ready to rather than having to worry about getting to reservations – it will provide us a more relaxed time in the parks and give us the opportunity to try some more of the yummy treats I have read so much about ;). I also suspect we’ll skip character breakfasts until we have children who will enjoy them a little more.

Carlsbad – I still believe we had our best breakfast at Rubies Diner so it comes very highly recommended! It might have been nice to have a little more time to explore around here but we know we will be back one day as we have Legoland Tickets to use which have no expiry date (due to an issue on our Honeymoon).

San Diego

  • Best Western Bayside – The hotel was all a little beige, the breakfast was poor but if you could over look those 2 things it was fine. It was in a good location, clean and comfortable. We aren’t really breakfast people so it suited us and I think we would stay here again but it would also be nice to try somewhere else next time so it will purely come down to budget I think.

  • Sightseeing – We really liked San Diego and actually our 2 days here (and especially when we were in Coronado) had us seriously discussing looking into the possibility of moving to California in the future. The days we had were perfect for us and I am glad I did the research and planning before we left. I would only change that I was clearly starting to come down with something without really realising. It may have meant we didn’t waste an evening sleeping! Having said that we still had a truly great time and enjoyed all the breweries we went to. We would recommend a couple days here and can’t wait for the opportunity to go back!

  • San Diego Restaurants – We went to the Melting Pot which we enjoyed but would do differently next time. Just having 2 courses was enough for us but instead of Cheese and chocolate we will have cheese and entrée. My regret here is that I didn’t do more research into places recommended by the locals to find some cool little known restaurant which wasn’t part of a chain. But then I didn’t know what to expect of San Diego or how we were going to feel so thought it best to go armed with reservations. As you know we never made it to our other reservation! We also may have benefitted from eating as we fancied – some of the breweries had some yummy looking food and extensive menus.

  • The port and embarkation – We have learnt to always have all documents printed and to hand – even ESTAs which we were told we didn’t need to print, but even with a little glitch here the staff were very helpful. Otherwise we had a very smooth boarding process here and can’t think of any complaints.

Sea

  • The Wonder – We have only cruised on the classic ships to date and we love them and their charm. We haven’t experienced the Magic since her changes in dry dock a few years back so can’t compare 100% but we felt at home as soon as we boarded, there is a little wear and tear in a few places but on the whole I believe they do a great job in keeping the ship look great.

  • Stateroom – We loved our room, our Verandah and the location. If you put your head on the headboard you could definitely feel some vibrations but certainly nothing to keep anyone awake. We liked the navigator verandah and the privacy it affords when in port etc. we would definitely stay in this room again.

  • The CMs – Honestly, overall the best staff we have experienced anywhere. They were always friendly, funny, welcoming and we can do nothing but praise. Only one minor point was slow service for drinks in wavebands once or twice but that’s not the end of the world and they were busy. Our serving staff were the best we have had and would definitely ask for them if/when we cruise on the Wonder again.

  • Food/beverage – some of the desserts including the chocolate buffet were a little disappointing, especially in BBB but maybe that’s my European Palate not being used to American type desserts? Otherwise we enjoyed everything we had onboard. Also, considering there is a monopoly on board I thought the drinks prices were very reasonable. My only negative is that so many drinks of the day have coconut in them but that’s my own taste. I had intended getting coffee and snacks and sitting in cove café but we never found time for it. I also wish we had gone to Tritons for breakfast more. We enjoyed the evening we skipped the MDR and may do that a little more in the future – especially when we are repeating menus we have had before.

  • Palo – Delectable (even the desserts), need I say any more?

  • Spa – We enjoyed our treatment and next time I am hoping I can persuade DH to stump up the money for one of the couples villas (fingers crossed)

  • Using the app – It’s very straightforward (once I figured out how to turn my data off for everything else) and useful to have but I do still like having the paper navigators!

  • Entertainment – what we saw was very good overall. I am still disappointed about missing the Golden Mickeys though. Very very excited about Tangled on the Magic. I thoroughly enjoyed the talks by Stacia Martin and I would go so far as to say it was a real highlight of the whole 3 weeks for me. I am a little disappointed we didn’t make it to more of the talks by Captain Puckett. My only negative really is that the CDs morning show, Stacia Martin and captain Puckett were all in the morning, it may have worked out better for us had 1 of these been a little later. We also really enjoyed the adult entertainment they put on for us. That whole team did a fantastic job! We did our first trivia’s and animation classes and can’t believe we had never done them before but we definitely won’t miss them again!
There was a good selection of films onboard too but we only had chance to watch 3 in the theatre – Inside Out, Ant Man and Bridge of Spies all of which we enjoyed. We also love having so many films in the room. We just wish they either gave out a sheet of start times (like they used to (or at least did on our first cruise)) so we weren’t always just watching bits of films OR on demand which I believe they do have on the newer ships.

  • Mixology/tastings – a LOT of fun

  • Over 18 areas – I am glad we finally experienced these properly and we really enjoyed them!

  • Ornament exchange – I am glad I did it and I am running one for our cruise next year BUT that may be my last. I enjoyed it but not sure I need to do it again.

  • Ports/excursions – With the exception of Puerto Vallarta we really enjoyed our visits. Those 3 excursions were great and we believe worth every penny. However, Puerto Vallarta will be a miss for us in the future and we will most likely stay on the ship or just get a taxi to the boardwalk for a wander.

  • The Panama Canal – One of the 7 modern wonders of the world. And an enjoyable transition. I would recommend doing a little research on the canal, it doesn’t have to be extensive just some information on what a canal is, why they chose to do it at that spot etc – it will make the day a little more interesting. If you really want to be at the very front of deck 10 for the first locks you will want to be there by 5:30. However, after the 1st lock it really thinned out at the top so perhaps you can afford a lie-in and go up for the 2nd or 3rd locks. And don’t forget about deck 7 Aft. Remember – this is a rainforest. Don’t be surprised if it rains (Or pours in our case )

  • 14 days – I was nervous about the amount of sea days. I think I have mentioned before but DH can get a little bored if he isn’t doing anything and I was worried he wouldn’t enjoy all those sea days. I needn’t of worried at all, he loved his cruise! Next years 7 night cruise is not going to feel long enough now though! I do think we will stick with DCL for our foreseeable cruising future, we know what to expect, we have the best time and the service is fantastic.

Overall
It has been a long and sometimes very difficult last 2 years for us. This vacation came at the right time and was everything we needed and more. We believe the order was right – busy week then cruise - and every element was just fantastic. There is very very little we would do differently but so much we would love to repeat. I think I may even go as far to say it was the best vacation we have ever had, it just had all the right elements. I also loved the complete disconnect we had from technology which helped us connect a little more.

I would say if you are on the fence about whether or not to do this cruise you should go for it. Everyone we met was having a great time and I don’t think you will regret it. 14 days goes much more swiftly then you think it might and there is plenty to do.

Trip Reports – It’s quite a commitment but I have enjoyed writing this and sharing our experience with you. I hope some of you found it interesting and informative. I think I have covered everything but if you have any questions please do ask. I check the DIS fairly regularly and will respond as soon as possible.

For now take care and I will wish you all a

Thanks for the report and all the pictures. I've been fearful of having so many sea days and it was nice to hear that you were able to keep busy during them.

I agree with you on the desserts. They are very pretty but tend to not have much flavor. I can never figure that out. I'd rather have a plain looking thing that had a lot of flavor. I must be the oddball cruiser.

You may have already posted it, but what is your next planned cruise?

I'm happy that you enjoyed Disneyland! I will be there next month and I love its originality and charm! I live 5 hours away, so I go quite often. For a longer vacation I love to visit WDW since Epcot and AK are my favorites! I have a couple of questions for you? What hotel (condo) did you stay at in Anaheim and do you have pictures of your ornament exchange gifts (given and received)? I'm participating in an ornament exchange during my next cruise, but it doesn't look like many people have signed up thus far.

It has been a pleasure!

Our next cruise is on the Magic out of New York next October - Almost a year to the day this cruise started! only 2 ports - Castaway Cay and Port Canaveral (Disney tickets and transportation included). We will be going with others for the first time - my cousin, his wife (Gold DCLers) and their boys who we are very close to. I have also managed to persuade my Mum, Dad and Brother to join us for their first cruise (well my mum and dad both went on cruises with school when they were teens and my mum is very apprehensive as she was very sea sick - I keep telling her a lot has changed since those days!!) It's all very exciting and will be a cruise of a different dynamic. We usually cruise just 2 of us and prefer late dining. Next time there will be 9 of us and we have agreed to early dining
