We are invited to someone's open house because they just had a modular home built. We don't really know their likes as far as what type of wine And we really don't want to bring alcohol.
The party is before Christmas if that helps.

Since it's like a housewarming, maybe a champagne would be safer as a way to "toast their new house".

Or wine. If it's not their choice, for whatever reason, they can regift it, or serve it at a gathering.

A potted plant would be nice; a festively wrapped or potted poinsettia would be perfect for the season. A special vase they can keep with a simple floral arrangement. A cute set of dish towels, maybe wrapped with a medium sized cutting board. A cool candle/ candle holder. I can find all of these things except the plants at Home Goods or that type of store.

I was invited to a small gathering last Sunday and brought a small flowering plant. I will sometimes bake cookies and bring a dozen or so on a pretty plate.

I do like to take candle. Yankee has some cute names like home sweet home. If they don't like the scent they can re gift it or just leave it out for show.

I think anything edible is always a safe gift, assuming there aren't severe allergies. Depending on how much you want to spend you could get a small serving plate or bowl in either white or a holiday pattern and out wrapped candies in/on it.

At my whole foods they sell orchids for 19.99, that is usually what I bring. People seem to like them.

A scented candle would be the last thing I'd want somebody to bring me, followed closely by brownies as the second last. If you really don't know these people very well just go with something ubiquitous like flowers.

I like a seasonal flowering plant-then they can plant in yard or keep in house-like the orchid
Flowering Christmas Cactus (NO THORNS LIKE A REGULAR CACTUS) is in shops now-I LOVE that plant-not as big as a Pointsettia

May be small, but how about a Christmas ornament saying "first home" or "home sweet home".
