From AKL to ASSp - the TR also known as "Did we just become Deluxe snobs?" *UPDATED 6/11*

Ahahahaha Joe taking a picture of you taking a picture of the carpet is the BEST! He's definitely a keeper! (Love, Mom lol) :tinker:

I'm planning to start a protest movement against Chik-fil-A. In spite of your apparent love for the chain, you may be interested in joining along. Hear me out.
While CFA's owners have had some pretty controversial stances, I feel the one that gets overlooked the most is their oppressive "closed on Sundays" policy. I can't even begin to count how many times we were in the mood for CFA, only to be shot down by this policy. Hungry for waffle fries? A chicken sandwich? Too bad. If it's Sunday, you just have to suffer. And they don't care, apparently.

This has to stop.

Anyway, great start to the trip and the TR! AKL Savannah-view always looked fun to me. And Lion King theming? That's the best Disney film EVER.

Looking forward to reading more!
The only time I ever seem to want Chick-Fil-A is Sunday morning. I just want their Chick-N-Minis with some honey and a frozen lemonade. I rarely seem to want anything else from there at any other time.

I love AKL have only stayed at Kidani, but it was awesome, all three times. I loved it. Favorite? BLT, BCV,BWV, AKL,OKW, POR,POFQ... I could go on and on. Can't wait to read more.
We got a chick fil a 4 miles from my home about a year ago, I had to go opening day. I try to limit my trips there. Love your video ;)

AKL!! IS!! AWESOME!!! The overall experience is amazing. I have never stayed on club level but I did have a balcony and it was the coolest thing to step out and see. I remember swimming in the main pool and all the animals were around the pool area. You could walk up to the fence and see them all. You are one lucky gal. Recently we stayed in the Port Orleans Riverside Hotel. It was pretty darn amazing and both my wife and I loved it. We both agree we'll go back. So I guess its a toss up for me. I don't care what hotel it is... I'll just be happy it is Disney.

The Who: that'd be me, Candace, and my fiance, Joe! Joe and I got engaged in Disney back in January during Wishes and I'm still reeling from it.

Me too! What an amazing feeling right? But back in November 2013! We just got married this past August and spent the first part of our honeymoon at the World the beginning of September.

We also had a really sad task we had to accomplish this evening and that was to drop our pup off at his grandparents' house. :sad1:

Worst feeling about going on a vacation EVER! But remember....Disney's calling!

HI Candace :wave2:
I just finished reading your previous TR and really enjoyed it! So I'm hopping on over here to follow along. Can't wait to read more!

Kelly

Okay count me in for this TR!!!

I love the excitement for Chick-file-a!!! We just got our first one up here in Rhode Island last year and the line is still always out the door or 10-20 cars deep in the drive up. Its crazy but that food sure is delicious!

I'm extremely jealous of your CL experience so far, my wife and I tried to get CL at CR in May for our honeymoon but unfortunately we waited to long to make the decision and it got booked up :-(. I can't wait to see how the rest of your trip is going to be tho :-)

My son got his first job working at Chick-Fil-A this summer. He loves working there. He still likes to eat there so he's not tired of it yet :)

LOL at your Chick Fil A post...I also LOVE it and that was the only solace I had when it was time to leave Disney because I knew I could eat Chick Fil A at the airport before our flight home lol Now that we have a Chick Fil A in my town (which is really weird because I live in CT and there are only 2 in the whole state) the I realized the airport one sucks!

I read your last trip report and loved it! Can't wait to read all about this one!

I thought August was the most unbearable month for humidity at WDW. The last time we were there in August there was record capacity crowds, the heat and humidity were so bad the sweat just pored off our bodies, pre fast pass days, with two and half hour wait times on most rides. My husband told me he would never come back (he did). Good times! Sorry to hear it was bad, but I'll take the heat over rain anyday.

My husband is an MSU grad, so there's a lot of "Go Green" at our house!

I'm a big Chick Fil A fan, too. The closest one to me is about twenty minutes away or I'd be there weekly. I swear they put crack in those sandwiches.

Pretty jealous of your club level room and awesome view!

Great start to the TR!!

Thank you:goodvibes!!! The beginning is always so much fun to write about...the end is a different story:sad:.

Just wanted to say, I'm joining in, can't wait to hear about your trip! And I'm from Michigan too! So heyyy....and GO GREEN! :thumbsup2 I'm sure you've seen/heard about last night's game?!

YAY thank you for reading :)!!! Michigan hollaaaa! It was 70 degrees here yesterday - in NOVEMBER. What is happening?! Whatever it is, I like it!

GO GREEN is right!!! Oh my gosh, that game. I am STILL reeling from it. Funny story actually...we had some people over to watch it, none of which really cared about the game except me, and with ten seconds left and us losing I went to turn the channel out of anger when someone said "WAIT NO!" and I exited out of the tv guide and ... the greatest thing I've ever seen happens! Seriously I will never get over that:scared1:party:!

It was so awful the first fews days!! I had F&W planned for our 3rd day (10/1) and it was not pleasant :crazy2: Luckily we had a resort day the next day and then it started cooling down.

This is me. My boyfriend gladly lets me sit in the window seat while were on the ME to minimize him embarrassment:sad2: #noshame. I actually started crying today in the train station because there was a guy playing "Down By the Riverside" on the saxophone, which we usually hear every time we are in the food court at POR. The PDD is real :sad1:
That room is incredible :worship:

So excited to read more :goodvibes:goodvibes

Hello:wave2:!!! Oh that heat was unbearable. We did F&W two days - the first it poured all day and so we were stuck in our ponchos and those things are like mini saunas so that wasn't fun. The second day the sun was out but of course that made an already hot day even hotter.

#noshame should be the hashtag for ALL Disney trips. Crying walking down Main Street? #noshame Crying during Wishes? #noshame

I am excited to follow along! Where I live, in Michigan, we don't have Chick-Fil-A so I completely understand your excitement. We always get it when we head south and it is our first stop at the Orlando airport every time we go to WDW.

I can't imagine how hot it is in Florida in September, sounds miserable. Your room at AKL looks amazing! I can definitely see how ASSp would be a disappointment after that. We leave for our next trip in 8 days and are splitting between Pop and BWI, with Pop first.

Yay, I'm so glad you're reading:goodvibes!!! The lack of Chick-fil-As in Michigan is so real:headache:

Florida in September is absolutely crazy and we were as prepared as we could be for it. We knew going into it it was going to be HOT. We had little fans, cooling towels, bought insulated water bottles, stayed very hydrated, took A/C breaks and it still was almost unbearable. It kind of put a damper on the trip to be honest - that heat EXHAUSTS you. I don't know that we'd visit again in the summer or if we did we would be more resort-focused and less parks-focused.

Going from ASSp to AKL is something I would never recommended...lol. GOOD CALL on doing the value first on your trip - you are a smarter person than I!

Yay! You made it! Crying is totally allowed here upon arrival (and departure) of "home". I totally get the worry of your room overlooking the lobby; even if it wasn't possible the emotional roller coaster running through your head wasn't a fun one I know. Glad it all worked out great in the end. The key to the hear is to NEVER say it isn't too bad because then it gets 20 degrees hotter and 500% more humid.

Is crying allowed during other times too because...:ssst:

It really was an emotional roller coaster with the room sitch! I feel bad even saying that - what a first world problem - but nonetheless it stressed me out!

I wish I knew about that key to the heat...I feel like it came back to bite me, like "HA, you don't think I'm that bad? I'LL SHOW YOU!"

Oh I will SO join you on that protest movement! When we went in January we left on a Sunday and drove. When we finally arrived to our hotel for the night there was NOwhere to eat except a KFC and a Chick-fil-A. This was before the love really started so we just figured "eh, let's get Chick-fil-A, we never have it" and it was closed. So we were forced to go to KFC and...yeah compared to Chick-fil-A...:sad2:

I was LOVING all the Lion King theming in the room! Definitely one of my favorite Disney movies too :lovestruc!

The best and happiest of days!

...I always thought that too - thanks for clearing that up for me!:rotfl:

:rotfl2:I always have the same experience at these "breakfasts"

Beautiful.

While watching your video, I started tearing up too, between your excitement and just seeing the sign....:goodvibes
Aw man, I wanna go back...

Awesome!!! I would love to stay CL one day - it has always sounds so cool. And that view is GORGEOUS!!!

You gotta do, what you gotta do!:thumbsup2:rotfl:

It really is the best and happiest of days - I need one of those days again soon:sad:

Ugh, isn't arriving on property the BEST feeling?! I don't understand how people DON'T cry to be honest.

If you are ever interested in staying Club Level, look into renting DCV points! AKL is the only resort with Club Level rooms that are designated for DVC members so if you decided to rent points that would be your only options but it is the BEST option! We ended up paying less than what you would for a moderate. We should have just stayed there the whole time!

Actually ... Magic Kingdom is the most magical place on Earth. Not all of WDW. It's a common mistake. One that even I make sometimes.

I think that was only three. There's room for a few more!

And you'll finally see the truth ... that a hero lies in you.
Sorry, I had to.

I'm too lazy to scroll back up and check this, but ... didn't you have Chick-fil-A for lunch? So I would have guessed AKL. Sorry, I guess you're a little predictable.

Yay! Savannah view!

Carpet pictures are always appropriate when there's a Mickey head in the carpet. Someone should tell Joe that fact.

You're so right - I actually read that but must have forgot! I love that little tidbit of trivia!

When it comes to Chick-fil-A...I am definitely predictable:rolleyes1

That savannah view was so amazing - take me back!!!

See, my thoughts exactly! What's wrong with a little carpet picture ESPECIALLY when there's a Mickey head? I think *I* should be making fun of *JOE* for NOT taking a picture.

Ahahahaha Joe taking a picture of you taking a picture of the carpet is the BEST! He's definitely a keeper! (Love, Mom lol) :tinker:

It's my moooommmmmm!!! See, I was actually thinking he ISN'T a keeper for not getting down there with me and taking a picture too - there was a MICKEY HEAD in the carpet, come on!

The only time I ever seem to want Chick-Fil-A is Sunday morning. I just want their Chick-N-Minis with some honey and a frozen lemonade. I rarely seem to want anything else from there at any other time.

WHAT are Chick-N-Minis and why did I not know they exist?! (Answer: because I only ever get the exact same thing.)

We walked over to Kidani during our stay and had dinner at Sanaa later in the week and it is AWESOME over there! SO much quieter and more peaceful than Jambo House. We're talking about renting DVC points again for our next trip and CANNOT decide between BLT, BCV, and BWV so it was nice to see your rankings of them!

Good for you for having self-restraint. If there was one four miles from me I don't think I'd be here typing this right now...

AKL!! IS!!

Oh my gosh isn't it?! We were talking about renting DVC points for our next trip and trying another deluxe but Joe keeps saying "but...AKL." That balcony is truly one of the most amazing things. Club Level was so great too, you should try it sometime! That is so cool about the animals being around the pool area!! I wish I would have seen that. Although, then I REALLY would never try another resort.

Me too! What an amazing feeling right? But back in November 2013! We just got married this past August and spent the first part of our honeymoon at the World the beginning of September.

Worst feeling about going on a vacation EVER! But remember....Disney's calling!

Ah, you got engaged in Disney too:love:!!! I love hearing those stories :goodvibes! We're considering doing a mini-honeymoon after the wedding to Disney!

Dropping the pup off is really the worst part about vacation:sad2: But you are right - DISNEY CALLS!

HI Candace :wave2:
I just finished reading your previous TR and really enjoyed it! So I'm hopping on over here to follow along. Can't wait to read more!

Kelly

Hi Kelly :goodvibes!!! Thank you for reading both, you're so sweet!! These have been a lot of fun to write and definitely help with that Disney Depression!

Okay count me in for this TR!!!

I love the excitement for Chick-file-a!!! We just got our first one up here in Rhode Island last year and the line is still always out the door or 10-20 cars deep in the drive up. Its crazy but that food sure is delicious!

YAY, hi:wave2:!!! Oh I am SO JEALOUS of your proximity to a Chick-fil-A. I honestly don't know what I'd do with myself if one opened by us...probably quit my job and start working there. Let's be honest.

Oh that's such a bummer about your CL experience :( That is the one thing that's crappy about those rooms - they book up SO quick. We were lucky to get AKL but I think that was because we were only looking to stay for the one night.

My son got his first job working at Chick-Fil-A this summer. He loves working there. He still likes to eat there so he's not tired of it yet :)

See, that would be my fear! That I'd get sick of eating it - though I can't see that EVER happening!

HAHAHA that's so funny. That would be the one thing that would make leaving Disney a little better. Chick-fil-A solves ALL.

I read your last trip report and loved it! Can't wait to read all about this one!

HI!!! Thanks for reading this TR too:goodvibes!!!

Oh my gosh, your August experience sounds crazy! Isn't that funny how when you're there in the midst of it you're like "NEVER AGAIN" and then there you are...in August...with sweat pouring off your body:laughing:.

Tell your husband GO GREEN!!! Is he still reeling from that game a couple weeks ago like I (and every other State fan) is?!

Love it! Can't wait to read more!

Thank you for reading:goodvibes!!!

September 24, 2015: Falling In Love With AKL

Hi everyone! I neglected this for too long - things have been kind of crazy over here! I think, also, I'm just kind of sad about not having any Disney trips planned  I only log onto the Disboards once every couple days and only spend like five minutes per visit as opposed to when a trip is planned and it's..well a lot more:laughing:. We were originally talking about doing a mini-honeymoon (before the big one, because money) after the wedding and we just recently found out a friend of ours is getting married the weekend after ours...in another state. So, Disney may be a no go after all which, I know at least YOU all understand, is a huge bummer. I also just saw that See Ya Reel Soon is there for FIFTEEN days and I got even more depressed.

That Disney Depression is real.

disney store.jpg

But, actually we've been doing this...

Okay, let's move on from depressing things and talk about OUR TRIP which was definitely NOT depressing!

So, I left off taking pictures of the carpet, ya know normal behavior. After Joe yanked me away, we decided we should probably go get our luggage. So, just to really show that we have never been Deluxe people (BUT WE ARE NOW, DON'T WORRY WALLET) we went to the desk in the lobby and asked for a luggage cart. And the guy said, "oh, we don't give luggage carts here." Um oh...okay. I guess we'll go drag our stuff in one by one bye thanks anyway... "No, we take your stuff for you. We're fancy here." :rotfl:OH OKAY THEN. Where have you been all my life deluxe resorts? I think we went and got the car and loaded everything on the cart and then they brought it all up for us. AKL'S SO FANCAY...YOU ALREADY KNOW. Don't stop reading - I'm sorry.

Once we were officially settled in the room (for our ONE night:rolleyes1) we did what anyone should do when staying Club Level. We took up the offer of the CM who checked us in when he asked if we wanted a beer or a glass of wine. We each got a Tusker beer and headed out to explore! At first, since we aren't fancy, we looked at each other like "uh...can we bring these free beers with us...?" "You ask." "No, you ask!" "No, YOU ASK!" "Fine, rock, paper, scissors."

I can't remember who lost but I think we both won when we discovered we could in fact go explore the outside of the resort with our FREE BEERS. Did I mention they were free? "Free" anyway...

I really wanted to go find that savannah overlook in the back of the resort by the fire pit. It took us a second to find it - this resort is huge - but eventually we did and were both amazed. I think this was the first moment we truly fell in love with this resort.

I also got to bust out my brand new DSLR that I got for a CRAZY price (crazy in a good way). I had played around with it a little before we left but I am definitely still learning how to use it, the settings, and how to take really good pictures with it. BUT even on the auto setting, the pictures were SO MUCH BETTER than any camera I have ever owned. And let me tell you, I've owned a lot of cheap point and shoot cameras...

P1000092 (Custom).JPG

That truck in the background was one of the private safari tours they do at AKL. I THINK you have to actually be staying at the resort to do it but it looked pretty cool!

Joe called his mom while we were down here and I continued to take a million pictures (no but seriously I think I have about a million of the animals, I was in awe). This was one of my favorite parts of the whole trip to be honest. It was just the beginning, we were at this AMAZING resort, a resort I NEVER though I'd be able to stay at, together, watching antelope, giraffe, zebra, and wildebeest, drinking awesome "free" Tusker beer...it was such a great time.

After hanging out down there for awhile, we decided to head back up for a couple more drinks and some CL snacks.

On the way back...

P1000093 (Custom).JPG

This resort is amazing. You can see part of the fire pit in the lower left of the picture. This is also where we thought (key word) they played the outdoor (other key word) movies that we were excited about. On the recreation schedule it said the movies were out by the Arusha Savannah Overlook by the Main Lobby so...this is where we thought it was. Tonight was The Little Mermaid and I had grand visions of us relaxing outside watching The Little Mermaid. Stay tuned to see if that happened...

Back up at Club Level, we each got two more Tusker beers and some snacks they had out. Joe also may or may not have grabbed us a couple glasses of wine - they were "FREE"!

P1000094 (Custom).JPG

P1000095 (Custom).JPG

Club Level, if you can't tell, is so amazing. I feel like we spoiled ourselves and now want Deluxe AND Club Level every time. It was so nice to have a lounge to go relax in. They always had movies or TV shows on, CMs willing to get you whatever you wanted, and lots of snacks and drinks. They had a little fridge with different pops, carafes with jungle juice, water, iced tea, a cappuccino machine, teas, tons of snacks...it was just so nice. While we relaxed here, we were trying to decide what we wanted to do for dinner. I didn't make any ADRs for this evening because I figured we'd want to hang around the resort and wasn't sure that we'd want to shell out the extra cash for a sit-down meal since our dining plan didn't start until the next day when we checked into ASSp. We talked about maybe going to Downtown Disney but knew that would take a significant chuck of time out of the evening that we wanted to spend at AKL. We were leaning toward just getting dinner at The Mara since it would be "cheap" and wouldn't take a ton of time.

Oh, at this point too, Joe also took the time to send a picture of me crying as we arrived on property to my mom, dad, and sisters. He's (NOT) a keeper.

We decided to walk over to Kidani at this point. The walk was really nice and easy. We went straight back to the savannah area and immediately noticed how much quieter and calmer it was over here compared to Jambo House. I don't know which one I necessarily like better but Kidani definitely had a more laid back feel to it. There were a ton of animals out. This huge bird, I'm not sure what it was, was chasing a bunny for a long time and that was really cute to watch. And then we got to see part of the opening scene from The Lion King.

P1000103 (Custom).JPG

"From the day we arrive on the planet..."

I actually didn't take too many pictures over at Kidani because we started talking to a lady who was over there. She was very nice and had moved to Orlando within the past year and worked as a server at one of the Orlando area restaurants. She also had a place in Michigan near where Joe's family has a cottage. She said she likes to just come to AKL and watch the animals. So, she wasn't staying there, just likes to come and hang out some evenings. She was also alone. Interestingly enough, we just happened to see her as we were looking over the balcony in the Club Level lounge the next morning. She was in the lobby...in the same clothes. So...she may have stayed all night watching the animals or...met someone. You do you girl!

The animals were acting really strange at one point and the lady said the same thing had happened the evening before right before it started raining. And, wouldn't ya know, two minutes later it started pouring. It was actually really cool to watch. Once it started raining we figured we should probably head back and get some dinner!

AKL looks so beautiful. It's on my list for must do's. I can't wait to see what you do for dinner.

Club level would be freaken AWESOME!! You have no idea how much I would love to do that. From your experience thus far it would be worth it. Its got to make you feel fancy for sure. Yeah, the wife and I are going to rent DVC points the next time we go for our sons first WDW trip. It should be epic!! I just wish the kid would start walking already so we can go... he's two months old and already refusing to listen to his dad. LOL!!
AKL'S SO FANCAY...YOU ALREADY KNOW. Don't stop reading - I'm sorry.
You are just funny! Keep it up!!

Just so that I can be sure that I'm understanding you properly ... you liked AKL?

In all seriousness ... the pictures look amazing! Between that and the free beer ... I can see why you fell in love.

Interestingly enough, we just happened to see her as we were looking over the balcony in the Club Level lounge the next morning. She was in the lobby...in the same clothes. So...she may have stayed all night watching the animals or...met someone. You do you girl!

Animals always bring people together ...

WHAT are Chick-N-Minis and why did I not know they exist?

They are only the most delicious breakfast items ever. They are little soft buns with a sort of honey glaze with one nugget on it. I actually had some for breakfast this morning. The amount of times I try to order them after breakfast is stopped being served is sort of embarrassing because I can never remember.

I have got to look into this. We rent DVC points occasionally but I have always wanted to try club level and this is a great option. The only problem would be is that I'm sure they fill up quick.

I also just saw that See Ya Reel Soon is there for FIFTEEN days and I got even more depressed.

Me too! I'm going on a trip for 9 days in December and it makes me feel like a failure as a Disney fan because I thought that was a lot.

This is also where we thought (key word) they played the outdoor (other key word) movies that we were excited about.

I sense that a pretty good story is about to come?

they were "FREE"!

Well, of course. It is a rule that while staying club level you must eat/drink the cost difference between that and the regular room cost. If they aren't charging then there is never enough.

We decided to walk over to Kidani at this point. The walk was really nice and easy. We went straight back to the savannah area and immediately noticed how much quieter and calmer it was over here compared to Jambo House

Good to know. We are staying at Kidani next month and I was a little worried about not being near Jambo house where the action is but I'm glad to hear it is more calm and the walk isn't bad.

She was in the lobby...in the same clothes

Interesting, I guess there could be a lot of reasons but that just seems odd.

Club level looks so amazing!!!!!!

On my last trip we were lucky enough to go on the Wild Africa Trek tour at AK so we were able to get wicked close to a lot of the animals and it definitely made my wife and I want to stay at AKL soon so we could see animals all the time.

. Interestingly enough, we just happened to see her as we were looking over the balcony in the Club Level lounge the next morning. She was in the lobby...in the same clothes. So...she may have stayed all night watching the animals or...met someone. You do you girl!

Dying over here :rotfl2:

You are making me want to stay at AKL so bad! I haven't really considered it before because of the time it takes to get everywhere and now with a stroller and the busses and well you get the idea...

Now that being said I totally get this deluxe snob thing you're talking about! I hate to admit it but I think I'm one! Which makes me a little scared we are doing our first value trip in just over 3 weeks!! I'm hoping we love it, if we love value we can do more trips and longer trips for the same money!!! I've never not stayed deluxe so I'm a little worried....

Also club level is my dream!!!

Ahhhh, basking in your excitement of fancy CLUB LEVEL status! :cool1:

We'll be arriving tomorrow & staying at Pop for 2 nights before heading to AKL.. your post has me so excited.. except no free beer for us! :confused3

LOL @ that woman with the same clothes on the next day.. :rotfl2: perhaps she slept on a bench outside near the Savannah!? Or met a 'friend' or something!? How bizarre hahaha.
