Stay Play Dine 2016 Calculation Thread

VALUE RESORTS
TICKETS: No Discount (no surprise there);
ROOM: $1.75 Off Rack Rate per night (no that isn't a joke!); (with the hotel tax this actually comes to $1.97 per night off at POP and $1.98 off per night at All Stars)
DINING: 40% OFF Everybody.

Test Bookings Looked at:
MANY!

I have added value resorts to the initial post

Hey Don...the weird thing it took me awhile to figure out was that the first person got a larger dining discount than person 2, 3, etc. Have you looked at that option happening at the values? I haven't pulled anything on values AT ALL yet so I could be wrong.

Random thought - Could you be seeing differences because you're hitting the $15 extra for more than 2 adults in a room? I've been working around that by using 2 adults and a 15-year-old, who is an adult for dining and tickets, but doesn't trigger the "extra person" charge.

I accounted for that when I had a 3rd adult. I'd invite you to check me on it in case I'm wrong but it really looks like it is 55% on the first person and 45% for each additional person off of dining.

Again, very preliminary, but I ran numbers for Boardwalk Inn, Water View from Jan 11-14 and Jan 10-14, and the best fit was 45% off dining and $53+tax off the room (normal rate is $518). I only looked at 2 adults and 2 adults+1 junior (15 years old). Not by any means definitive, just a data point for reference.

Wow - I don't understand what would be up with those dates but the website won't show them with SPD! It will show them with the other discounts. Sorry! Did you try to call and ask?
I'm glad to hear you at least ran into the same thing I did. I tried to call today but the hold time was over an hour and I was at work (I did make it 30 mins in) and the online chat people had no answers. Thanks for looking.

If I change the dates to the 2nd through the 8th it at least registers "no rooms available for this promo." The 3rd through 9th flat out fails on the search and goes to an error page, weird!

Disney has random blackout dates for different discounts. For whatever reason, one of the dates in that range is blacked out for SPD at Pop Century, most likely.

I'm not getting the same results, but at this point I'm happy to chalk it up to some mistake I'm not seeing in my spreadsheets.

For Boardwalk Inn, I'm getting 45% off dining, plus a per-night amount of about $53+tax.
For Animal Kingdom Lodge, I'm getting 45% off dining, plus a FLAT amount (not per night) of $48+tax, and no per-night discount.

I had a thought about the 55% for the first guest vs. 45% for additional - how are you sure that's an extra 10% off dining for the first guest and not an equivalent extra amount off the room? Both would be per-night, and the first guest has to be an adult, so it amounts to an extra $6.18 or so per night. I can't think of a way to distinguish between an extra discount on dining for the first guest vs exactly that amount off the room. Or am I missing a clever way to make that distinction?

My eyes are glazing over. We're very close. I'm calling it a night, and I'll figure out what I did wrong tomorrow. :)

Wow...Boardwalk Inn did me in. The formula I was using worked at Animal Kingdom Lodge and Contemporary Resort. I didn't try Boardwalk...something special going on there. It looks like Yacht Club may have a larger discount too. I might have been sloppy on the deluxe calculations because for many people in that situation the room only is the better offer (not a good excuse, haha!) I have to throw in the towel too for tonight, maybe I'll trouble shoot some more tomorrow. I added some info to the first post clarifying this.

To answer the question on the 55% on adult 1 vs. 45%...it just worked every time. The fact that it came to exactly 55% (no rounding) led me to believe it's a discount on dining and not a random $38.48 discount on the room.

See how these calculations work:

I figured how much you save on the dining plan with SPD in order to make it a better deal than a room discount for moderate and deluxe resorts, assuming your 55% and 45% is correct. If your room only discount is greater than the following savings, then room only is better. Otherwise, SPD is the better deal, assuming you were planning to get the dining plan anyway.

2 adults save 61.84 per night - so if you room only discount is more than 61.84, the that is the better deal.
3 adults save 89.67
4 adults save 117.50
5 adults save 145.32

so if you have 4 or 5 adults in a deluxe resort room, then you might be able to save more on SPD. If you have 3 or less adults, then room only might be a better deal.

2 adults, 1 child saves 71.27
2 adults, 2 children saves 80.70
2 adults, 3 children saves 90.14

the savings that I calculated are:
DDP
1st adult - 34.01
2nd adult - 27.83
child - 9.43

here is the savings for quick service
1st adult - 23.56
2nd adult - 19.28
child - 7.86

What are you actually saving?

Moderate & Deluxe Resorts:
DINING PORTION
Adult 1: Multiply $34.01 by number of nights
Other Adults: Multiply # of Adults by $27.83 by number of nights
Children: Multiply # of Children by $9.43 by number of nights
ROOM PORTION
Take number of nights multiplied by 1.125 and add to dining number above

Example - 2 Adults + 1 Child for 5 nights - Savings = $361.98
The calculation should be within $0.10 (variation due to some rounding).

Some Deluxe resorts may not follow this formula and have additional room savings - stay posted for more details.

Value Resorts:
DINING PORTION
Adults: Multiply # of adults by $17.14 by number of nights
Children: Multiply # of Children by $6.99 by number of nights
ROOM PORTION
Take number of nights multiplied by 1.75 multiplied by 1.125 and add to dining number above

Example - 2 Adults + 1 Child for 5 nights - Savings = $216.19
The calculation should be within $0.10 (variation due to some rounding).[/QUOTE

Your calculation is accurate - using your method the savings I got was just a $.16 difference. We are doing 7 nights at Pop (preferred), 2 adults, 1 child, 5 park tickets and the regular dining plan. Saved $302.51 / 10% off our original package price.

IS THIS THE DEAL FOR ME?

You may be asking that question - it's really hard to answer that. For my family it still is the better deal even with the lower discount than last year. We're staying at a moderate resort.

At a Deluxe resort for MANY people the room only will beat this hands down. At Moderate and Deluxe it is debatable and depends on eating habits and your party breakdown (adults vs. children).

For anybody who is used to free dining in the fall - this deal will certainly come as a shock - it is nowhere near the same value as free dining.
Just something else to add when thinking is it a deal...
If you have access to tickets some other way (I'm assuming tickets are a required part of the package). We have APs, staying Deluxe, we have TiW and it's only two of us. So it's a no brainer for the room discount for us. But even if one doesn't have APs, there are tickets from Undercover Tourist, etc.

Absolutely - another factor on the room only discount is you can book it through Orbitz and save another 15% (capped at $150) there. Booking a room only on orbitz, tickets on undercover tourist, and dining OOP can beat the SPD deal for a lot of folks.

Awesome - thanks for sharing the data point with us! That is encouraging!

Wow, your data/analysis is dizzying and brilliant at the same time. I managed to play around online and found a Disney Jr. offer which upgraded my POFQ room from Garden to Riverview and saved $60 for doing so. I'll take that instead of having to switch resorts and adding a dining plan to get SPD. I'll set my sights on the Sassagoula! Thanks again for all your info.
