Everthing you wanted to know about Uber/Lyft at WDW

Thanks for the great thread, Rob! I'm huge Uber proponent and have been actively lobbying to get Uber here in Buffalo! Looking forward to you setting the record straight on common misconceptions and misinformation about Uber that I see here frequently.

I'm a single female and also a frequent work traveler. I've used Uber well over a hundred times. Always sit in the backseat. Sometimes drivers strike up conversation, sometimes they stay quiet. I've never once had a bad or scary experience and would expect the odds of one occurring are about the same as they would be in a taxi. Cannot recommend it enough!

Agreed, another single female who has used Uber and Lyft in SoCal, DC, NYC, and Long Island so far. I intend to use Uber when I go to WDW next week. I've had all good experiences with Uber and Lyft drivers. I can't say the same for taxi drivers, especially in DC - a few nasty drivers who didn't know where they were going and tried to take me for a ride and charge me too much. Uber and Lyft cars are far cleaner, smell nicer, and sometimes drivers even have charge cords for my electronics or offer to plug in my phone to play my music. I love Uber and Lyft! I don't know how popular Lyft is at WDW, but a lot of my Uber drivers seem to drive for both companies.

Excellent thread, this answered a lot of my questions about where to find Uber at the parks! Thanks!

Plan on using Uber for our Oct trip. We are staying at Old Key West, and will be traveling to Universal. Does Uber pick up at the building our room is in or do we have to get to the hospitality house? Thanks in advance

About the promo code: its a backend discount so we see it and get paid for it like any other ride.

Okw: we can meet you by your building. Please do not wait in the bus stop, however. Same for other resorts where the guard booth is before the buildings such as cb, allstars, pop, port orleans. Coronado is the exception on that. We can only pick up at reception at CS.

We are considering utilizing Uber and dumping the rental for our next visit. Wondering if you could give an approximate cost for the following:

  • SSR to BCV
  • BCV to AKL
  • BCV to Downtown Disney (doesn't matter which side)
  • BCV to Publix (at the Watertower shops)
  • BCV to Millers Ale House (W Irlo Bronson Memorial Hwy)

Thank you.

See the first post, and a reminder from a mod a few posts down, no discussing of pricing allowed here

Sorry if this has been mentioned previously but you can look at cost estimates in advance on the app if your curious how much it will cost you.

Hmmm...now I'm wondering. I was planning on using Uber frequently during my vacation next month to go from AKL to the Food & Wine Festival at Epcot, but was wanting to get dropped off on the International Gateway side of Epcot. If what I'm reading is correct, I can't be dropped off at either Boardwalk Inn or Beach Club in order to walk into Epcot? What about the Boardwalk itself? Can I be dropped off there?

Really weird that they require a reservation or ADR for drop-off. Not like anyone is parking their car there and heading into a park.

They will allow you to be dropped off at Boardwalk Inn for certain. We were dropped there numerous times on our trip last month. Security never even questioned us
I don't see how they can as some of the restaurants on the Boardwalk don't even participate in the Disney ADR system
And you can't drop anywhere but at the Resorts, no cars at the Boardwalk

I have two possibly stupid questions re: Uber. (We don’t have Uber where we live and I’m really excited to try it when we’re in Orlando for our upcoming trip.)

1. If I have a promo code for Uber, can I use the promo code dollars to cover the tip? (i.e. if my promo code is for $30 and my ride is only going to be $12, can I tip $5 with the remaining promo code amount?)

2. Is it true that Uber drivers dislike it if we use them for short distances? Like from our Disney hotel to one of the Disney parks? (Or from our Universal hotel to the Universal parks.) I’ve been hearing mixed information about this.

Any time you privately hire transportation, it is a service, and if you receive good service you should tip. Is it required? No. Of course not. But you *should*.

A friend of mine is a driver at Disney as well (im serious, this really wasnt me!) and had a guest complain about a $90 cab ride plus $10 tip and a bad experience. The uber ride was under $30 and then the guy didnt tip. That person got 1 star on his rating from the driver. Dont be that guy :)

On a related note, heres the revenue model for cabs vs uber:

Cab: Driver leases the cab for $1000 a week (thats the orlando price) and keeps all the fare. Hes responsible for gas, but not maintanence.

Uber: We own our cars, and many have normal payments. We keep 72-80% of the fare based on service level. We pay for our own gas, repairs, and maintanence.

Did you really rate a passenger 1 star because they didn't tip you? Uber from the start has clearly stated drivers are not to be tipped. If you're driving and expect a tip then don't work for Uber. You're a driver, this is your profession by choice. Unless you're handling bags then what do you feel you deserve a tip for?

He said it was his friend driving but I totally believe it. A friend in Boston had a low passenger rating. She found out from a driver that it had to be because she never tipped. She didn't even know it was expected because it was advertised as cashless! If the drivers want tips it should be included in the app rather than penalizing passengers.

I thought Uber wanted cashless transactions for safety as much as anything. If some folks know the drivers have cash from tips it puts them at an increased risk for robbery.

We just got back from WDW and we used Uber twice, from Wyndham Bonnet Creek (right next to Caribbean Beach Resort) to the Boardwalk and back later. Both times the drivers just showed their ID's at the guard shack and said they were dropping off and were just waived thru, no problems. I questioned all our drivers about the attitude of Disney towards them and they all (4) said that it was improving greatly. My DD25 requested Uber on her app and vehicles were within 4 minutes of our location all 4 times. We never waited longer than maybe 5 minutes (if that long) for our drivers to arrive. DD25 messaged the driver our exact location at Bonnet Creek and the drivers picked us up at tower 5 main doors. At Boardwalk, they picked us up at the front entrance, where the taxis wait and where the valet parking is. Our drivers were all very friendly. We got picked up by a Camry 3 times and a Mercedes the last trip. The drivers all seemed fine with the short trip (maybe 2 miles?) and I did tip them each time. No one turned down the tip but were very appreciative of it. My only issue was with last Mercedes driver, who didn't know where she was going at all and stared at her app the whole drive which was kinda scary. She stopped and waited at a green turn arrow because she was staring at her phone. I just gave her directions to our hotel and tower and then it was fine. All in all, we really loved using Uber and DD25 and I will be using it on our W&D Half Marathon trip in 45 days. :)

That is a huge red flag. Is there a way to report this? I'm sorry she didn't know where she was going but surely Uber would not want a driver staring at their phone while driving

Thank you for this thread!
Gave me the courage to cancel my Alamo reservation. We've never gone without a vehicle.

I made reservations for DME, and using Uber for our transportation needs. Should save me some $$$ and the headache of driving. :-)

I think the lady in the Mercedes is new..Ive been hearing about her lol

As for the tipping thing, the person who put up the link didnt actually quote it. So i will:

"You don’t need cash when you ride with Uber. Once you arrive at your destination, your fare is automatically charged to your credit card on file — there’s no need to tip."

You do not need to, but that doesnt mean you should not tip or that it wont be accepted. As a general rule, you should always tip for good service..at a restaurant, in a cab, or in uber/lyft

1. They dont have a tipping option within the app for uber. Lyft, however, does

2. I dont hold it against anyone. Some nights thats all the rides are and its perfectly ok.
