"You know he won't remember it" what do you say back?

Ya know what's funny? Disney is the only destination where people seem to ask this question. Do people not understand the concept of family vacations? As in, vacations with the whole family?

I remember being astounded when my MIL ASSumed that we'd be dropping our then-toddler off with her rather than taking him with us to Disney. Um, he's a part of our family, lady. Back off. Yet she never assumed that we wouldn't take him to other places we traveled to as a family.

Isn't that the truth!! Why would you take a baby or toddler to the beach where they can't get in the ocean, it's too hot to crawl, they might get sunburned ..... because your family is going there. But no one questions you when you say you are taking them there. I have many friends and family that vacation means - no kids, no matter their age. Kinda makes me sad.

I say either - "No, but I will."
And
"Well, there are a million things that could keep us from going in the future (disease, death, disability, etc.) and I am not one to let opportunity pass by."

We are heading back to our happy place at the end of January and this time we will be taking our then 2 year old for the first time!!!!
So excited!
But honestly I can't stand that everyone tells us that our son won't remember the trip.

To directly answer KTwiegs question...

What I would want to say: "You're an idiot."
What I would probably say: "So?"

This brought back memories. :) When I was a kid, I wanted to go to Disneyland in the worst way. This was long before WDW existed. I'm the oldest of four siblings. My mom was one of those "we're not going to Disneyland until everyone is old enough to remember it" people. When I was ten years old and she told me she was about to have another baby, my first response was "Well, there goes Disneyland for another ten years." She doesn't let me forget that. :D Fast forward many years. When my now 25 year old nieces and nephews were 3, my parents took the entire family to WDW. I'm not sure how much my nieces and nephews remember, but I have lots of fun memories. And quite of few of them are triggered by the pictures that were taken. And at age 62, I never have made it to Disneyland.:flower:

I'm 41, and here's a list of things I remember from before I was 5 years old:
1. The cold AC in the hotel Disney gift shop after running through a torrential downpour with my mom from the room.
2. Getting a stuffed penguin from Sea World on that same trip.
3. My brother puking in the ice bucket we took from the hotel for half the ride home in the back of the car and resting his head on his stuffed walrus from Sea World.
4. Pete's Dragon in the Electrical Parade.

And a million non-Disney trip things.

Do I remember meeting Mickey? Nope. But the fondness for WDW was planted early. I don't remember getting spanked in those early years either, but I sure grew up knowing for some reason I didn't want to get in trouble with my folks! Same with Disney. It left a deep-seated affection for the place, even if I don't have many vivid memories. I acquaint it with happiness. I also have pictures of me there at that age. One is on my fridge right now as a reminder that I'm going back soon.

So tell those naysayers that his mind may not remember the details, but his heart will remember the happiness. :)

I took our son for the first time when he was 16 months and it was FANTASTIC. He is now 4 and is fixing to go for his 4th time in 2 weeks. When everyone told me that I said the exact same thing as many others. I will remember it and will have many great precious pictures to show him when he is older of all his visits. At the age of 4 he loves to pull out all three Disney scrapbooks and looks in amazement at him meeting these characters over & over and can't wait to go back! Hope you & your family have a great trip. Disney is fantastic with little one's !

I tell people who cares cause when he is there he has a ball each time and each trip he has a ball for diff reasons. Live in the now. Don't worry about the future. That's what pictures are for. My 3 year old has been to Disney 6 times already. My 5 year old daughter is going on trip number 10 I think. They both didn't go till they were 13 months old. Ha they don't remember the first trips but man they had a great time and so did we.

I sometimes tell people we want to go and the kids are along for the ride. Lol

We took our youngest to DLR when she was 3. She's 7 now and doesn't remember that trip but loves looking at the pictures!

You will.
Babies don't remember anything but you don't just leave them at home all the time. You take them to see Santa, if that's your thing. You have birthday parties for them. You take them to the zoo. If you didn't do anything with your baby becuase they wouldn't remember it, we'd keep our kids in the house for the first three years of their life. But we don't, do we?

I tell them how magical taking a two year old is. Watching their eyes light up when they see the characters or a special parade makes me feel magic. I'll never forget the first time I watched my 2 year old daughter watching her first Disney electrical parade. Her face was beautiful.

Life isn't primarily about the memories. It's about the moments.

1. I'm going for ME.
2. He could. My daughter still talks about our trip when she was 2. Remembers stuff I didn't...
3. If he didn't, I don't care.

I hate when people say that!

We totally understand the magic of Disney, yet chose to leave our 15 month old with my parents to go on an adults only vacation to Disney. Taking our daughter at that age would've been hard. Fast forward to age 2- what an easy child she'd become. First trip was age 2, and it was magical. The photos from that trip are my favorite. She's 4 now and about to go on her fourth trip in October. She only remembers our prior two trips- but remembers the Polynesian from her first trip.

People irritate me to no end with this comment. Like many others, I say "I will."

We went when DD was 4mo, when she was 3yo and when DS was 1.5yo.

Each time I have fantastic memories: the first time when DD was 4mo, we have the BEST pictures of a little girl in line before us at Midway Mania making DD laugh (little girl was maybe 7...). I have these amazing pictures where she is full on smiles nearly as big as her face. She doesn't remember sure, but now that she is 7 herself, she loves to look back at all the trips we've taken together and ask questions.

DS at 1.5- we have a hilarious picture of him meeting Pluto and he has the funniest "*** IS THIS?" look on his face. Also wonderful pictures of him and DD dancing at the Move it Shake it dance party together.

DD at 3 does remember parts of her trip but not the small details. She remembers her first experience pin trading fondly. Will she remember when she's 23? Maybe... maybe not. But they were great family moments, in the moment, and great memories to look back upon.

And when it comes right down to it... unless the people complaining are the ones paying for your vacation, they have absolutely NO say and should really mind their P's and Q's.

I ask them (assuming they have children), when your child had his first birthday, did you have a party? Invite the realtives? Get a cake? And if they celebrate Christmas...For your child's first Christmas, did you take them to see Santa? Put up a tree? Buy lots of gifts for the baby? Did you enjoy any or all of this? Did it bring you joy and happy memories? Do you think that your child remembers any of this?

I have taken both of my girls at 2 years old, and honestly I think 2 is the perfect age for a first trip. The pure joy on his little face will make you forget about all the naysayers. Have a wonderful time!

No offense but I agree with them. But it's ok. You will remember.
