Mickey Pants on the Hub Grass!: A June 2015 Dining Report - Complete!

I think the #mickeypantswedding is an ingenious hashtag myself. Funny, unique.

Mickey Pants in the Hub Grass, I'm singing that to the line "Insane in the Membrane" from the song of the same title......just the chorus part cuz' there's some nasty words in that song ;)

Speaking of which, I must have those Mickey Pants.......I will have those Mickey Pants.

I'm a bit behind, but love your world showcase food and drink tour. Ya can't beat that avocado margarita and then beer and ice cream to boot.

Of course that fancy france ice cream can't compare to mickey pants on the hub grass. Ingenious name and idea!

Great update! Mickeys Kitchen Sink so adorbable.

It really is adorable!

Haha, it's way more fun than most!

You should definitely have those Mickey Pants. Might as well do it at least once!

Haha, thanks! Luckily, the French ice cream is different enough from the All-American Mickey Pants that we don't have to rank them.

We're nearing the end of this dining review, so I think it's time for a fancy meal! Kathy booked an ADR at the California Grill for Saturday night.

Before heading over to the Contemporary we had to make a stop at one of our must-do’s while at the Polynesian. Yep, we were heading to the Tambu Lounge! The Tambu Lounge always looks crowded because it is attached to ‘Ohana, but it’s pretty easy to get a drink. Plus, most people are waiting for their ‘Ohana reservations anyway and don’t linger. We were lucky and found four spots right at the bar.

Kathy and I both got the signature drink of the Polynesian...a Lapu Lapu! We of course got them served in the signature pineapple. These are nice and refreshing, but they can pack a punch if you aren’t careful. Plus, they go down easy.

Bob chose a sangria. It's your typical Disney sangria, but typical Disney sangria is good! He enjoyed it.

Jeff went with a rum and diet Coke.

We finished up our drinks and hopped on the monorail to the Contemporary. Once there, we made our way to the 2nd floor where we proceeded to check-in at the California Grill desk. We took the elevator up to the 15th floor and waited for our table.

I very much enjoy the atmosphere of the California Grill and love the decor. It has a casual and modern flair that I could try to replicate, but it would instead end up as a mish mash of stuff that didn’t look like it went together. Oh well.

They also have an incredible wine cellar and wine menu. Just look at all those beautiful bottles. It was a short wait before our pager went off and we were directed to our table.

We ended up at an awesome table with a great view of the Magic Kingdom and the Seven Seas Lagoon. In fact, I think it was almost the same table we had the last time we visited the California Grill. Although we’ve heard varying reports from Cali Grill since it was re-done, we have eaten twice since that time and both meals were fantastic.

We were given our menus and had a chance to peruse it before placing our orders. A few minutes after sitting down, our waiter, Chris, came by to introduce himself and take our drink order.

Kathy decided to try a cocktail. I don't remember what all was in this cocktail, but it did contain sake. She has gotten this before and loved it once again.

Since this is the Cali Grill, my dad and I chose a bottle of red wine. We chose the Silverado Cabernet Sauvignon. It was a very good bottle and we enjoyed it.

Jeff got a diet Coke. He looks excited about it.

To start, we ordered a couple of appetizers. Kathy and Jeff went with the Three-Meat Signature Meatballs. Kathy’s thoughts on meatballs. There was a bit of a kick to the meatballs. It was good, but a bit surprising as chimichurri isn't usually spicy.

I chose the Sonoma Goat Cheese Ravioli. This appetizer has something of a cult following, and I must say, it is earned. I have tried a variety of options over the years, but this was my first time trying this one. It was delicious! It has a creamy flavor that works well with the accompaniments of tomato and mushrooms. I would highly recommend.

Chris timed our meal very well, and there was a nice amount of time to finish our appetizers before we received our entrees.

Jeff and I both chose the pork two ways. This entree is one of my favorites in all of Disney. Partly because it is an all-around phenomenal dish, but also because I am a sucker for good pork. You will receive one piece of pork tenderloin and one piece of pork belly along with a goat cheese polenta and applesauce. The pork two ways was everything I hoped it would be and more. I cleaned my plate. Jeff also thought it was awesome.

My dad chose the bison striploin. He also raved about this dish.

Kathy chose another Cali Grill fan favorite, the Oak Fired Filet of Beef. She said it was cooked perfectly and loved the beef. It was served with a sweet corn risotto, which is right up Kathy's alley. Sweet corn is king in our town and this accompaniment hit the bar.

Once we were done with our entrees, they gave us the dessert menu. We decided we couldn’t finish off this great meal without a little sweet treat. Plus, we had a little time before the fireworks were set to go off. So, we ordered a couple desserts to share.

First, we picked the Warm Homemade Fritters. These are stuffed with bananas and topped with cinnamon sugar and served with a trio of dipping sauces. I believe the three sauces were peanut butter, chocolate, and maybe a caramel?

Our other pick was easy for Kathy. She is a sucker for anything strawberry and there was a California Strawberry Shortcake on the menu. It was a strawberry glazed donut, strawberry milk, macerated strawberries and basil, and fresh whipped cream. She loved this dessert.

My dad and I also ordered an amaretto to enjoy along with the desserts and fireworks. We had a perfect seat for the fireworks and enjoyed them before paying the bill.

Overall, we thought our meal at California Grill was wonderful. Chris was a great and personable server with good suggestions. In fact, everyone we interacted with here, from the check-in to the manager, were upbeat and personable. We will definitely be back. Funny enough, just days after our meal, someone posted a thread on here about their “awful” meal that very same night. I think that just goes to show you that everyone can have different experiences, even on the same night.

What a stellar review of the CG!! The dessert with the donut looks soooo sinfully good. I would like to return again for dinner there as we haven't been since 09.

Well, pooh......I exchanged our Cali Grill ADR for Citrico's. I'm not sorry as we've already been to CG in 2012....but I will miss the fireworks from there. It's all about trying new things, right? Those fritters look fantastic! I'm happy the meal was good, that's too much to spend for a mediocre meal.

We had a great dinner! I let Kathy and Jeff eat the strawberry dessert, but Kathy loved it. I recommend going back to CG at some point!

Finally catching up on your report, fantastic so far, so much fun to relive our trip!

Thanks! Glad you're enjoying it!

Oddly enough, Citrico's is one of the few places we haven't ever tried. I hear good things about it and should get there sometime soon!

fantastic trip report and will look forward to reading about the wedding :)

Thank you! We are looking forward to the wedding ourselves!!

For our last day at Disney, we almost always book a breakfast. Although our flights were not until late afternoon, we continued the tradition.

Our destination for this trip? Kona Cafe. I am a big fan of Kona because they feature one of my favorite breakfast dishes at Disney. We packed up the car and then headed over to the Great Ceremonial House to check-in. Kona was not overly busy that morning and we waited a few minutes for them to get our table ready.

Once we were seated, we waited a few minutes before our waiter made it over to our table to take our drink order.

Of course, we started with the press pot of Kona coffee.

Kathy and Jeff both ordered the much lauded Tonga Toast for their meal. They both thought it was good. Of course, it came with the strawberry sauce, which is what makes it great for Kathy.

Bob ordered the two eggs any style with sausage. He wasn't feeling any of the Kona specialties and went with this tried and true breakfast combo. He enjoyed it.

I chose the Samoan. It is a Hawaiian take on eggs benedict, with Kalua pulled pork (a sort of sweet and salty pulled pork), arugula, and hollandaise sauce. I normally love this dish. This time, though, my poached eggs were overdone. I really should have sent it back because one of the best things about poached eggs is that the yolks are nice and runny, and I love the mixture of hollandaise and egg yolk. But, I didn’t really feel like waiting for a new one.

I actually have mixed feelings about Kona these days. We’ve only had ‘meh’ service the last couple of times. It’s almost an odd mix of rushed and slow at the same time? We waited for a good 3-5 minutes after sitting down before we saw our waiter, and then he quickly took our order and was off again. We also waited a bit longer than usual for our meals. I don’t mind if we don’t see the server much throughout the meal, but when I do see you, I want to feel like you’re there for me and not just dropping by and moving on. However, the potential of Kona will most likely keep it on our list for the future.

Aw, so if you HAD to choose between GFC and Kona for breakfast, which would you choose? I'm a Tonfa Toast gal but love eggs too

We have a breakfast reservation there in about two weeks. I'm already have trouble deciding if I want the Samoan or the Macademia nut pancakes.

Nothing worse than an overcooked poached egg. The first and only time I have ever sent food back was on Mother's Day this year. My family took me to brunch and I ordered Eggs Benedict. The eggs were not just overcooked they were straight up hard boiled. I sent it back. Couldn't handle that kind of disappointment on Mother's Day.

Been lurking for awhile, but wanted to pop in and say thank you for the great California Grill review! I've seen some negative ones lately and was feeling uneasy about having a reservation there for my disneymoon at the end of the month. Your pictures and descriptions were so helpful and really made me look forward to this meal again. The strawberry shortcake, so delicious looking!

Kona breakfast looks really yummy too!!

First your Cali Grill meal looks great, especially those desserts. Gotta major case of the drools going on here.

And Kona and The Samoan, two of my favorite disney things. Agree our service has been spotty too, but pressed coffee, hollandaise, and a bloody mary usually make it all better ; )

The Samoan is my favorite breakfast, a must have on every trip!! I would have definitely sent it back, the glorious runny yolk is amazing!!

I feel like I keep hearing similar thoughts about Kona. I have a lunch ADR planned and keep going back and forth in my mind if I should change it or not.

Just caught up on this fun report!
Hey, next time we go to WDW can you plan all our meals and snacks? Pretty please?! Your picks look awesome.

Wow, the wedding planning all looks amazing. I think your "tasting" had more food than some other full weddings I've been too ; ) I'm presuming the tasting comes with the wedding price, but figured I'd ask so I can start putting away for my daughters wedding in 30 years. And how cool they can replicate items from F&W or whatever you'd like. Really allows you to make the wedding your own.

Mary hasn't answered this so I will, yes the tasting was included in the wedding pricing. Not sure that
would apply to all levels of wedding
