Family and I recently got back from WDW.
On our very first day, fresh off of the Magic Express, we went to MK. The very first ride we went on was IASW. There were 2 people sitting in front of us, a young boy (11?) and presumably his father. As soon as we cleared the tunnel, they BOTH whipped out selfie sticks to film the entire ride. It was odd because they seemed to have ZERO interest in even being there! The kid, at one point, stopped paying attention but kept the stick up, recording mostly nothing because he wasn't even looking at where he was pointing it. I immediately thought, "Oh noooo, it better not be this way from here on out. I'll eventually hit a breaking point."
Luckily, we didn't come across that again until 2 days later when we went to hitch a ride on the train in Frontieland. The family in front of us took one out to take a picture, but the CM's working immediately called them out on it. At first they "didn't hear" the CM, but the CM's persisted and made sure they were aware. They would not start the ride until it was put away. The family was cool about it.
I saw more selfie sticks in a few days than I have all year. I didn't mind them too much until people tried whipping them out on the rides. I saw one family at a character meal use one so that everyone could be in the photo. That's nice. It gives you nearly the same photo, every time, but at least the person on camera duty can get in.
