Selfie Sticks??

From that article above:

"Starting next Tuesday, June 30, when guests are seen at bag check or in the park with selfie sticks, a cast member will escort the guest to Guest Services where their stick will be taken and held until they are ready to leave the park."

PLEASE NO MORE SELFIE STICKS! I really cannot stand these things! As stated by PP they are intrusive, can be dangerous when the user is not aware of their surroundings, and also creates visual obstructions for others trying to watch shows, enjoy rides, enjoy park scenery, etc..

BESIDES, there are so many CMs and even fellow guests that are always readily available and happy to take your group picture if you politely ask and actually take the time to acknowledge people and interact with the people in your surroundings.

I work in DC and see these everywhere... and HATE them. Does WDW have rules against selfie sticks? Or are they everywhere in the parks these days?
I was just in disney and they have posts everywhere stating no selfie sticks on rides and I hope they ban these altogether.

A-men! How many parades have I watched through the screen of someone's iPad? And don't get me started on the fireworks!

So true and these people with IPADS have no issue with pushing their way to the front.
A side notr last trip I was standing at a good point for the parade with my camera on it's tripod and right before the parade got to us a women started pushing her way up to where I was and tried to get in front of me with her IPAD. To put it short she didn't get infront of me or others around me who were there early with me. Needless to say she wasn't happy and said some choice words that were laughed at.

Is it really that difficult to ask a passerby to snap a photo of you & your group?

Selfie sticks are dangerous, because users typically lose sight of their surroundings, and have hit others with them (myself included). This was especially bad at the runDisney races this year.

Yes it is that difficult especially when multiple people are in the picture. Having to ask someone take multiple pictures to get just the right one is a pain. And setting a timer was suggested too....Yea? So should i bring my tripod into the park and set the camera on that? Lol. Like I said, I am not the person getting in the way of anything nor will I use it while I am walking.

If Disney is going to ban selfie sticks based on the logic that they are abused, then they should ban "baby" strollers and electric wheelchairs as well. I agree though, when people are using them carelessly, then yes, they are a problem. But banning them completely just seems ridiculous to me.

Tripods are already banned in the parks. Strollers & electric wheelchairs are a mode of transportation, not a means of getting a photo, and already are not allowed on rides anyway, so that point is moot.

And I've gone to WDW with a group of people before, and have asked strangers to snap a pic of our group, and it didn't take any longer to get the photo we wanted. It was actually a nice conversation-starter, and we wound up taking a picture of them in return. It spreads pixie dust. If it came down to it, sometimes we had a PhotoPass photographer take the the pic. They're everywhere for a reason. And as others have mentioned in this thread, the selfie you're trying to achieve can just as successfully be taken with your very own arm if you really needed to get it on your own.

I really do not get your logic.

I can understand your point that you may not be the person getting in the way or using while walking, but a lot do. And unfortunately you have more in that camp then the courteous ones such as yourself.

Strollers and electric wheelchairs are completely unrelated. If you wanted a good comparison iPads like most of been saying here or even say the larger smart phones as people record on those during parades and fireworks. And if they did ban strollers someone would probably complain 2 years olds walk to slow and cause traffic. Ha!"

I guess I am in the minority and i hope that they aren't banned. I have a selfie stick and it is really good for group pictures. I'm not the person walking around with it up in the air nor am I blocking anybodys view of anything. But to ban a selfie stick would make no sense to me. Are they going to ban people from taking selfies as well? Cuz it is almost the same thing, just that the stick has more length.

This is how it SHOULD be, but as know it's always the small majority that ruins it for everyone. For me, as long as people only use them when they move over to the side of the walk way vs. using them right in the middle blocking traffic, or even worse, on rides, shouldn't be a problem. But the problem is not everyone is considerate of others. Though for me my biggest issue is with the texters and walkers, they are not watching where they are going so either they bump into you or they go so slow that you can't get around them.

Tripods are already banned in the parks.
They're not, only big ones. "Tripod stands or monopod stands that cannot fit inside a standard backpack."

https://disneyworld.disney.go.com/faq/parks/restricted-personal-items/

So a tabletop tripod, travel tripod, or travel monopod are fine, though I wouldn't call lugging a 3 lb tripod through the parks enjoyable. Pre-MM, I would take my GorillaPod into the parks because I can then hang it anywhere, and I have an IR remote for my camera so I can trigger it once we're settled.

To each there own I guess. I won't argue with anyone else on here because obviously their opinions are to be treated as the standard. But for me, until they officially ban them, I will always have mine on me.....but don't worry, I won't bump into anyone or block anybody's view. Never have, never will.

Article in local paper and all over the news today. Starting Tuesday, June 30 Selfie sticks are banned anywhere in the park. At the gate they will ask you to leave them to pick up later or return them to the car or your hotel. It is going to be enforced.
Now, if they'd only announce, "...and if anyone reports you for line-jumping, you'll be removed from the park and your ticket media will be voided."
