Hey :)
So we sail in at the end of December and our passports expire in March of 2016. I have read some places will not accept it if your ( Canadian ) passport expires with in three months. Castaway cay and Bahamas are our ports, should I be renewing now? I don't want to take the chance but I also don't want to put out and extra $500 + if I don't have to before we sail :)

DCL will not accept it at online check in, it needs to be six full months.

Whilst most counties IE the UK and Europe consider a PP to last to its expiry date a few countries around the world want three or six months on it. As looking at each port and each cruiser is time consuming they gave a set rule of six months.

So renew it now as DCL will not allow it.

Thank you! I don't mind renewing but at the same time ticks me off, lol what's the point of the expiry date if it is not accepted 6 months before it expires. So instead of paying for a 5 year passport I paid for a 4 1/2 year passport!
Ok my complaining is done, Mickey says I need to go get some passport renewal forms!
It's a darn good thing I love that Mouse!

What occurs in the UK is they " add" the unused bit when you renew it, so if it has six months to run you get a ten year six months PP .

As a fellow Canadian, I agree. But you can now get the new 10 year (so really 9 1/2 years) passport for the adults in your party. Costs more money in the short term, but may be less aggravation.

It's the Bahamas govt. requiring Canadians to have a valid passport for 6 months following travel to their country. I know, we're just special :badpc: that way!

So let me get this straight......is this rule only applicable to people with Canadian passports. Our friends are from the US and their kids passports will be just under 6 months from expiring when we travel.

Non USA Citizens requiring a P/Port, if you are able to travel as a USA citizen on your cruise then its not applicable.

Sorry to sould like a dolt.....but when we do online check in, Disney will accept and put in their passport or will they need to bring along a copy of birth certificate?

If they have a passport, that's all they need. No need to bring the birth certificate.

I have a US passport. We were going on a Caribbean cruise a few years ago in November. Our passports were due to expire in December. I go a lot of flak from people saying it had to be 6 months, but when I put it in at online check-in it accepted it. (If I had been planning on traveling on any of the European trips I would have had to have had a renewed passport.) If the online check-in hadn't accepted our passports for the Caribbean cruise I would have had our birth certificates and driver's license, so really no problem. We traveled and when we got back I renewed our passports for 10 more years. Had no problem at port either.

If you are traveling to the US from a foreign country (i.e. Canada, UK, etc.) you DO need to have that extra 6 months, especially if you are going on a cruise to another foreign country from there.

To oversimplify -- think of your driver's license as trumping your learner's permit. Once you have your driver's license you don't need the permit. Your marriage certificate trumps your marriage license. Your passport trumps your birth certificate.

I have not found ANY reference on DCL's website that stipulates that all cruises where you need a passport must have 6 months expiry regardless of port. What I found was the following (the bolding is mine):
_____
In order to board the ship, all Guests are required to provide proper travel documentation. Guests unable to provide proof of citizenship will not be permitted to sail.
Passport Requirement
All travelers, including U.S. Citizens and all foreign nationals, are required to have a valid passport to enter or re-enter the United States by air.
Visa Requirements
In addition to a valid passport, many countries require an entry visa based on your nationality. It is each Guest's responsibility to identify and to obtain all the necessary visas before embarking on the cruise. Because requirements may vary, Guests are advised to contact their local Consulate or Embassy for more information on required travel documentation for all ports of call during the cruise.

Please visit our section on Travel Document Information for your cruise itinerary for the most up-to-date proof-of-citizenship requirements.
____

I find it hard to believe that they are requiring 6 months for everyone regardless of origin of country and ports visited just so that they don't have to check each individual as that would mean that they also wouldn't check for visas if they are required. If you are coming from a country that requires visas, they are certainly going to be checking that before allowing you to board.

HOWEVER, having said that, according to various Bahamian sites Canadians are required to have 3 months expiry upon leaving the Bahamas if they are travelling directly to the Bahamas (from Canada) but 6 months if transiting through the US which I presume would qualify when taking a cruise from a US port. Sometimes the standard rules for different countries provide an exception if it's a cruise but I haven't found any for the Bahamas. Thus, you DO need 6 months expiry but not because this is a set rule that DCL has instituted based on what they state on their website. If you visit the part of their site that pertains to Bahamian cruises it will simply tell you that Canadians need a valid passport. It is always up to the traveller to find out the rules that pertain to them and the ports they are visiting.

During the on-line check-in DCL will accept any gobbledegook for passport information. It does NO validation at all during this stage. They check the passport and expiry and visa requirements at the port, not on-line. Don't assume that, if you put in passport information during on-line check-in that it means that you've been checked and approved. I've put in nonsense when renewing a passport and waiting for the new number.

My youngest daughter's passport expires in November. We are sailing on the Fantasy next week. I have been assured by both my DU travel agent and DCL that it is fine. I wanted to wait to renew it until she turns 11 later this year bc that will then be the last child (5yr) passport I have to get for her-- at 16 she can get the 10 year version.

I am bringing BCs too mainly because my kids are internationally adopted by me as a single parent and they look nothing like me. I want to have proof that they are my kids and mine alone!

They don't require it from everyone, at least; they don't require it for US citizens.

Your username and description of the passport at 16 tells me you live in the US. The bulk of this thread is for Canadians. Not for Americans.

Today on the phone I was assured we would have no issues with our canadian passports on our cruise.
We leave in dec and our passports expire March 1 / 16.
I'm still nervouse because of all the conflicting info.

Keep the name date and time of the person who says its ok.

For important !! questions about passports you need to contact the Homeland Security office. The people who answer the phones at Disney Cruise Line don't always give correct information about Disney Cruises.

For the people from Canada you need to contact the office in Canada that is in charge of passports. You don't want to be stopped comming into the US and miss your cruise or a big hassle returning home.

Homeland Security from either country doesn't care that Susie from Disney said it was OK.
