Members in the Military ( anyone die serving ?, Memorial Day Question)

My dad and I both served in the Navy, both my grandfathers split town when they knew they had kids on the way, so I dont know about them. No ladies served, (although my cousin did but not counting that)

Dad in the Air Force, FIL in the Navy, nephew in the Army, and Uncle in the Marines. None of them died serving, but my uncle was paralyzed. My FIL was in the Navy for 30 years. My dad, FIL, and nephew were not injured.

Both of my grandfathers served in the Army & saw active duty during WWII. My mom's dad was stationed in Germany, & my dad's dad was in Asia, if I remember correctly.

My dad also served in the Army & saw active duty during the Vietnam Conflict. He does not talk about his time spent in Vietnam much at all.

My father-in-law was in the Army for a time as well, but not during any wars or conflicts.

My brother-in-law (DH's brother) served in the Army for many years & had two tour of duties in the Middle East. He was in Iraq during the first conflict in the early 90s.

Go, Army!

IIRC, Dad, granddad, and great-granddad were all in the Navy, for varying lengths of time, and though none retired from the Navy, all were honorably discharged. Dad suffered several injuries in Vietnam, including (long undiagnosed) PTSD, for which he receives some disability now, but it was a very long road getting there.
One of our great-great (-great?) granddads fought in the civil war, so I know it goes back a long way in the family - I believe our generation is probably the first of dad's side not to enlist at all, though one of my maternal cousins spent several years in the Marines.

My dad was in the air force. His brothers and several nephews served in the army, marines and navy. My FIL was army, BIL marines. Niece's husband did several tours in Afghanistan and Iraq as did her brother. My dad's oldest brother was navy and died on the USS Yorktown in the battle of the coral sea. My brogher was named after him and has his purple heart. Let's remember all that serve or served and be grateful for our freedoms.

As far as I know, two great uncles served in WWII. I don't know what one did and the other was a rear gunner and that's all I know. He didn't talk about it, at all, so no one knows anything about it.

My grandpa, my dad (his son), and my uncle (his other son), were all int he Navy. My dad retired after 23 years of serving. My grandpa was in was in WW 2 and the Korean War. My dad served in Vietnam. My husbands dad and uncle were in the Navy. My husband was in the Marines for a brief time, but was honorably discharged.

Grandfather--Navy
Uncle--Army died WWII in Okinawa
Uncle--Marines
Dad--Air Force Vietnam
Brothers (2)--Army

We have a long history of people serving in the military in my family. My grandfathers were in WW2. Both of my parents were in the Air Force for 20+ years. an aunt and uncle were both in the Air Force. One BIL was in the Air Force and the other just retired from the Marines. My neice is enlisted in the Air Force and another neice is married to a man in the Air Force. And my ex husband (my sons dad) was in the Air Force and is now part of the guard.

thankfully there have been no deaths in my family due to military service..

My Dad was in the Air Force, grandfather was in the Navy during WWII, great-grandfather was in the Army during WWI, and my great-great-great grandfather was in the Union Army for the Civil War. Nobody (as far as I know) saw any battles, although my great-great-great Grandfather caught tuberculosis in camp and died of it several years after the war.

My father and his two brothers served in the Army in Europe during WWII. On my mother's side one uncle was in the Army in WWII, and his younger brother was in the Navy after WWII was over. My father's cousin's son was killed in action in Vietnam. I believe one of my mother's cousins made a career out of the Navy.

My brother and I were in those years where it wasn't required to register for the draft. A Marine recruiter kept trying to get me to sign up when I was a senior in HS, but there's no way I would have survived in a military environment. I finally met with the recruiter to prove to him that I wasn't Marine material.

My genealogy studying uncle said that like my great great father died n the Civil War. He was wounded and captured by the confederates and died while in their care.
