The Cabins at Fort Wilderness

We are planning a vacation and I had originally booked CBR for 4 of us. Well, my DD19 just came home from college and realized that she goes back a week later than she thought, so we quickly added her to our reservation. After some playing around, I realized, after adding her, the Cabins are only a few hundred more and thought, well why not?? Who knows the next time we will be able to do a family vacation.

Anyways, we have never stayed there, and I was reading that you can rent golf carts to get around.

A couple of questions:
  • Are they really necessary?
  • Can you rent prior to your arrival? If so, how? I can't find anything online.

Thanks!!

We stayed at the cabins last fall and golf carts are definitely not necessary. They looked like a lot of fun, but we got around the resort using internal bus transportation and bikes (we brought our own from home, but you can rent them).

The internal buses were very convenient and never crowded when we were there.

I always sing the praises of FW. There is so much to do for a family vacation. If I were planning on spending 90% of my waking hours in the parks, then I would not get the value out of FW that it offers. We spent about 2 1/2 days just at the resort, enjoying the pool, riding our bikes, visiting the horses, and hanging out at the playground and the beach.

Do you have 5 adults? That might be a little trickier, depending on your size. We had 2 kids and 3 adults and we were comfortable. I actually slept on the bottom bunk and it was fine for me, but I am a fairly small person. Keep in mind that you only get 2 double beds and a set of bunk beds.

We loved going to the campfire at night and watching fireworks on the beach, too.

It is a great resort and I highly recommend it, if it fits your family's needs in a Disney vacation.

I think a lot of people rent golf carts from an outside company that is cheaper than the Disney one, but I don't know much about that. There are some good threads on this board about it.

The bedroom has a double bed and bunk beds. The living room has a double-size Murphy bed. If you are all adults, you could fit 2 in the double bed, 2 in the Murphy bed and one in the bottom bunk. I slept in the bottom bunk last time we were there, and it was perfectly fine. But if someone in your family needs to have a double to him/herself, somebody else would have to be on the top bunk. That wouldn't work for our family members. You would have to decide based on your family shapes and sizes.

Depending on the height of the person, an adult can sleep just fine on the top bunk as long as they are okay with the climb. I am only 5' tall and I was able to climb up to the top bunk and slept just fine at the age of 33, I still could now at 38. My 5' 4" mom slept just fine on the bottom bunk. I think as long as the people sleeping in the bunks are 5' 5" or under, they should be fine sleeping in the bunks.

We loved the Cabins when we stayed there, but it is years ago now. One time we did have a golf cart and one time we didn't. I don't think you need a Golf Cart, but it was convenient to have.
Good Luck

The golf carts are a blast and were my kids' favorite part of staying in the Cabins! We rented from Kenny at Tee Time and he was awesome. He was about 1/2 as much as renting directly from the Fort. I texted him when our plane landed and he met me in the parking lot.
Have fun!

we love having a golf cart, didn't get one first trip, and kept saying every day that we wish we had... We always get one now if staying at the cabins, 5 or 6 trips now.. there fun too have, no waiting on internal buses, plus it can be a long walk if you are near back of loop to bus stops... We really enjoy just driving around and looking at the area...

We just came back from an 8 day trip at the cabins. We have thought we would probably rent a golf cart for a day or two when we were at the fort more. However, we actually found the internal buses to be extremely efficient and so we didn't rent one. We never waited more than 10 minutes, and the vast majority of the time we waited less than 5.

Getting to the Magic Kingdom by boat was really fun and very quick. The buses to the parks in downtown Disney were also timely and not at all crowded.

We really liked the space of the cabins and especially having the outdoor deck space. We had groceries delivered and were able to relax and have a leisurely breakfast or apps and drinks in the evening while our younger kids slept. The whole atmosphere was a nice relaxed break from the hussle and bussle of the parks.

We requested a room in the 2100 loop so the main pool and campfire were a quick walk. We actually walked to the settlement/dock area took. It wasn't far.

No, we have 3 adults (DH, DD19, and myself) and 2 children (DD14 and DS10).

Wow, I've been reading nothing but good things about him!

Did you ship groceries from home, or use a service like Garden Grocer? How does it work with fresh produce/eggs/meat with delivery? We generally head to the parks as soon as we get there, so i worry about food sitting around.

Thanks for all the tips and advice! Looking forward to this first stay at the cabins.

Seeing I'm not familiar with this resort, would this be the "best loop"? I tried to view the map on the WDW website, but it doesn't list loop numbers.

Thanks!

If you are driving, you don't really need to splurge for the extra cost.

We had 2600 loop. Directly across from the pool.

We did have groceries delivered from garden grocer. We actually packed snacks and sandwiches a few days and ended up spending a lot less on meals than I thought we would. My kids preferred to eat a quick sandwich or heavy snack over waiting in line for a quick serve lunch.

We stayed in two cabins with ages ranging from 5 to 80 plus. There were nine of us in the cabins, five in one and four in the other plus two people in a campsite. We did not rent a golf cart and just used the internal buses. No one had a problem and the only transportation issue we had wasn't even with the internal bus. It was when we got to the dock to take the boat to Magic Kingdom and one was just pulling away. My son took out a quarter to get duck food and he and his soon to be five year old stepdaughter patiently fed the ducks until another boat came. So, sometimes not getting some place quickly more than makes up for things.

I checked into offsite golf cart rentals. They are much cheaper, but they can't bring the carts to you anymore. You have to hitch a trailer to your car or perhaps borrow their truck to drive the golf cart in yourself.
For those of you with experience with the cabins, do we need to bring our own dish soap or is some provided? Also, is there a bus to MK early in the morning for those with pre-park opening breakfast ADRs? We're going next week, and I'd love to find out some info in advance. Thanks for your help!
