Concierge tipping

For those recently off Fantasy/Dream and staying concierge--have they finally come up with some suggested tipping amounts (as they do with all other tipped positions) or is it still as confusing as before?

Leaving it it at your total discretion as to how much (or even if) to tip??

We just did our first concierge cruise on the Dream two weeks ago. There were no suggested amounts, just a section as part of the other gratuities charged to your account, only this was for your concierge team. The slip indicated an amount to be put on your ship board account according to number of people, including children, times the number of days to be added to your ship board account- just as other gratuities. We pre-paid all our other gratuities, so except for extra cash we add to the envelopes for exceptional service, we chose to tip our team in cash. There were envelopes for this on the desk in the lounge. We tipped according to our pocketbook and if we had used the team and had a big list of requests. We also tipped the bartender in the lounge and the server, in cash. So, since I had never done concierge before, I don't know if it is just as confusing- we just did the best we could and what we could afford. We felt they do deserve something, the service is very good.

Was this a 3 or 4 night cruise? As many of us all try and balance what tip level others do, what did you tip the concierge team, bartender and food server in the lounge? Just helps to see what others tip.

Personally I would look at either

$5/$10 pp pd,

Or

Consider the stateroom host / main server tip and then +\- from that.

I do read loads of flat tips $100 to $300 for a short to long cruise.

Always if you do not use them a lot, then reduce, if you use them a lot increase.

This is obviously from a classic ship, do we have to go to Guest Services to tip, or will the concierge handle it? I ask due to our upcoming family cruise on the Wonder out of Galveston.

Whilst that was from a classic ship it is now the same on the newer ships, they used to say you can give to them but some people are very embarrassed by that, so you gave the option to go to guest services, or ask the host in the concierge lounge to charge direct.

I have done both the difference is negligible between the four ships.

You do not have to go to guest services, if you prefer you can hand it to your concierge host.

Sounds like nothings changed.

I asked the question after someone posted they were told Concierge hosts opted to rely on tips rather than salary.

If true, one MIGHT think DCL would have some suggested amounts as with the other tipped positions.

I think as the service is personal and you can use them a lot or nothing at all a guide is hard, as my photo shows, " at your discretion" I can see why they do it. All the normal tipped positions have a basic service that is consistent. There is little variation on them so a guide is logical.

The parameters of concierge hosts and services are very varied, they now give some hints you will see its hinted at a per day per person amount.

I was totally unsure and we only upgraded at the port. They were super great and nice to us and perhaps I should have tipped more. We left $150 and the only reason I did that was someone else was leaving the same in an overheard conversation. There was no guidance whatsoever!

The service however can be different per stateroom per person, so if you use them less you could tip less, if you use them a lot tip more, it's difficult hearing what someone else's tipped to see if it relates to you in anyway.

While I agree that different staterooms can receive different levels of service, I believe that it helps to set better parameters by seeing it discussed on message boards like this.

Well--in my case the Shoreside did far more for me than the hosts on the ship. I severely over tipped the last 2 cruises and that won't happen again.

Should also add that the tips are shared by all 3 concierge hosts--making it difficult if you are trying to tip the one or two that may have helped you. In our case, we hardly even saw the one concierge host yet they shared equally in the tip.

MY suspicion is that DCL well knows that these hosts are extremely nice--to the point that you automatically like them even if they didn't do much for you. And then DCL trusts that people who are already paying extra $$$$ for concierge probably have more $$ to spend on a tip.

I debate slightly that the tips are pooled.

I know on the Magic and Wonder they are not.

I have heard cruisers nominate tips per host, ie.
$300 for Sarah,
$300 for Kemisha,
$400 for Julia.

At no point did the host taking those say they can't be done like that or will be looked, bar thank you sir.

If you do not nominate the tip on the new ships then it is pooled.

I think I undertipped but the concierge team received my largest tip! Out of everyone...Joseph (from Philippines) the assistant waiter was our favorite.

Never heard of the nomination process. We were told point blank (by one of the hosts you mention) that tips are pooled and no mention was ever made about a nomination process using the tip forms Disney provides.

Seems like most things they are inconsistent there were nominations accepted on my Fantasy cruises.

Don't you think tho they would make that known???

Especially if they agreed not to take a salary and work for tips??

And how did you nominate using the DCL tip forms?
