Room Only Discount-upgrade to package

It's been three years since we've been to WDW, and things have changed a bit. I was thinking of doing a room only discount with UCT for tickets. But, then, I was wondering if I book with a room only discount what happens if I later decide to do a package? Since it looks like we might be dining quite a few character meals, it might be less money to do the dining plan. I had really wanted a Little Mermaid room at AOA, but they are not available for room discount. Many thanks in advance for help!

A room discount can be used on a package. The discount will apply to the room portion only, but can be applied when booking a package (pending availability). With that said, if you book RO and change to a package later, the RO will have to be cancelled/refunded and a package booked, requiring a new $200 deposit. Since RO and packages are different reservation systems, money paid toward one cannot be applied to the other. In addition to that, if the resort/room type you book is no longer available under the discount (or the booking window for the discount has expired) when you change reservation types, you will most likely have to speak with someone in guest services to make the change without losing the discount. CRO CMs don't usually have the ability to go from one reservation type to the other while keeping the same resort/room type if there is no longer availability, but guest services will be able to help.

Mickeynut1 Thanks for the info. Looks like I probable should book the package. Appreciate your response

Just an FYI, you can do a ticketless package (room and dining only) if you would still like to purchase your tickets through UT. Simply call Disney (or your TA) and when you book your room, ask to add the dining plan. This will make it a package and will require a $200 discount. You can do this with room-only discounts as well. You no longer have to add tickets in order to get a dining plan with rack rates or room-only discounts.

Also, packages have to be paid in full 45 days in advance whereas "room only" reservations do not have to be paid in full until arrival.

I'd just like to add that when I booked our upcoming trip, I did room only at first because that's what the discount was for. I didn't realize that it could be made into a package until the cast member pointed it out. I had planned on getting my tickets later from UCT or Disney until he mentioned the pros and cons. For me, the pros of having the pkg is being able to book fast passes 60 days in advance and if I need to cancel the trip prior to the 45 day mark, everything is refundable. If I were to get tickets separately I'd have to get them early enough and link them if I wanted to get fast passes. Also if I had to cancel the trip, room deposit would be refunded, but I would still own the tickets.

Didn't know you can get a room/dining package. Thought you had to have room and tickets direct from Disney to get dining. Very interesting.

I reserved a ticketless package last Monday combining the summer discount for a standard room at CSR and the regular dining plan without any issue. That type of package cannot be booked online, you need to call. I got our tickets with points (airmiles) and from UT. Only took a week to receive the UT tickets and were easily linked to my MDE.
