Just home, my thoughts

just home from a week at disney and here's my thoughts. This was our third stay in 8 years, each time we stayed at a disney moderate. We are a family of 4, kids are 9 and 6. We are very mellow, quiet people, just sort of go with the flow. Our last 2 trips I had us booked solid. This time I booked our fp+ and that was it.

IMO, things have changed so much. Our time at the disney parks felt like we were being rushed along and herded, move move move. It was a bit much.

I put a lot of effort into making sure we had an Anna and elsa fast pass, dressing my daughter up, talking it up so she was so excited. And the whole experience was such a letdown. We arrived right at our fast pass time, we were the only people in the inner que, and the cast member came over and rather sternly told us we needed to make sure the autograph book was open, and the pen was ready before we met elsa. Twice. My daughter missed the instruction the first time since she was so enraptured with actually seeing the princess, and I was so busy taking photos of her amazed look I missed it. So he said it again, while reaching for the book in her hand to "help" her out. Once she met elsa she got less than a minute of her time before elsa was quite literally pushing her over to Anna to move her along. Another minute with Anna and the highlight of our trip was over. In less than 5 minutes total. It was a huge letdown.

Similar experience at the akerhaus princess meal. It wasn't terribly busy, but nobody really had time to stop really visit. I can remember our first ever character meal where we got probably a good 5 minutes with the characters to goof around and visit and take pictures. I mean for goodness sake, we paid a lot of money for the akerhaus meal to be rushed in and rushed out. The waiter was standing there wanting our drink and food order before we had even sat down. It was insane.

I wouldn't say I loved or hated the fast pass+. We got decent fast passes, since I stayed up til 2 in the morning to get them. It was hit or miss about how long we waited. Sometimes walked straight in, others we waited 20-30 minutes in line. We never hit the kiosks for more fast passes, because when we walked by them they all had lines. Stand in line to get a ticket to maybe not have to stand in line. No thanks. I tried a couple times to change things on the iPhone app, but it was really glitchy inside the parks. I never had trouble with it at home. Overall I liked the magic bands a lot. We didn't have any trouble with them.

We liked sdmt, my daughter and I liked it a lot. Toy story midway mania for us was meh. I wouldn't wait in line or scramble for a fast pass if we had it to do again. Buzz light years space ranger spin was just as good. My kids really loved the magic card game at magic kingdom (I don't remember what this was called) and the agent P adventure at Epcot. We discovered both of these by accident. If you have kids that like treasure hunt type games you should be sure to do these.

The food at disney has taken a big nosedive since our last visit. We didn't have anything all week that I would call good. Akerhaus was ok, everything else was mediocre at best.

I think we are probably done with disney for awhile. For us there was a lack of magic, and the magic is what always made the cost worth it for me. This time I felt it was more about moving us along, turning everything over quickly, quantity instead of quality. We vacation infrequently enough that I can't really consider spending significant money on a mediocre experience. It bums me out, but there it is.

So sorry that things were so rushed.

I've always worried (for years and over many trips) that our "next trip" would be the one where things were not as magical.
And, for years and over many trips, we kept finding extra magic... every single time!

But alas, I must say that our latest trip (this January) was closer to your recent experience.
And, I am very disappointed.

OP, I'm sorry the trip wasn't as magical as you had hoped.

You too, Robo.

I will say that our experience was similar, we always felt rushed and I was not impressed by the food. Although DH and I didn't feel the magic, watching the magic in our girls' eyes was totally worth it, and as you can tell my my signature we already have plans to go back.

Sorry to hear about the Anna/Elsa experience. We had the opposite. My dd is older (12) and they spent way too much time with her. I felt bad as I knew how many kids were waiting. But they kept talking with her and posing for pictures. But dd had a great time with them (even though she "thought" she was too old to see them :)).

It is disappointing when a trip doesn't meet expectations but I hope you able to find a little bit of magic. The food has continued to be a huge disappointment for us (and we aren't super food snobs). But I did find a good cupcake so that made me happy. I could skip Disney for a while but DD and DH keep insisting we go back.

We are going on a Disney cruise in April, spending 2 days for the first time at Disneyworld with my 3 girls. I am worried about the 2 days at the park for the reasons you mentioned. We booked our trip last minute and have been stressing ever since over not getting fastpass+ for a particular ride or not getting reservations that can accommodate a party of 6. Honestly, the preparation alone for 2 days has been exhausting and not what I remember Disney being like when I went with my family. That said, we absolutely love the Disney cruise . The character interaction is amazing and the kids clubs are fantastic - just thought Id mention it as a different option

Wow. We just returned and had about the same experience as you did. Were in THE WORLD for 9 days. We are rope dropper and park hoppers and have gone the last four years staring in February (my daughter is 10 now). In the morning, the parks are great, "old-school" Disney-feel to them. After that, it is mass chaos! The magic is certainly not gone, but the gleam is definitely tarnished. Overall, we had some fantastic experiences, but for the most part, the park feels like "an amusement park." I know that may sound strange because, well, it is... but with FP+ (which we really didn't have a problem with) lack of food quality, that "rushed" feeling through meals, meets, and even attractions, and mass and masses of people, it just doesn't have that "feel" anymore for us. I am not speaking for all, but for our family, $2000 in plane tickets, $3100 for resort room and tickets (stayed at Caribbean Beach resort) and $1200 for food quite a bit of money in the grand scheme of things. Don't get me wrong, we will go back, but we have already discussed a shorter trip, just to kind of get our fix and move on, but the days of the 9-10 day vacation our over for us. A couple of things that were really great: Staff at Caribbean Beach were OUTSTANDING. Most of the CM interaction was very good. The breakfast at BOMA was incredible. Some things that were really lacking: The busses were PACKED! Everywhere we went, they would just CRAM people in...it was downright scary at points. The food, for the most part, was really, really bad. Both restaurants and quick-services have really declined in the past two years. We did discover a gem in Columbia Harbour House in MK. Never ate there before, but it was a great lunch place. Chef Mickey's was filthy and the food was cold. The Garden Grill in EPCOT tasted like microwave turkey and macaroni and cheese, and don't get me started on Askershus...probably the WORST experience and most expensive experience we have had at Disney in the past four years! I don't want to go on a rant here, because we did have a really nice vacation, but there were so many walls and construction and just so much at Disney that just made it feel "normal".

OP, it sounds like your daughter is the ideal age to meet the princesses, I'm sorry it was such a disappointment. A vacation a WDW is very expensive and to feel rushed and unable to enjoy what you paid for is no fun.

I think the saddest part of your report is that seeing Anna and Elsa was supposed to be the highlight of your trip. Curious----how much time do you think each child should get with the characters?

I don't think that's sad or unusual at all, if you have a little girl. I'm expecting it will be the highlight of my two daughter's trip as well. I've heard numerous horror stories about enormous waits and I feel Disney could do a better job. Certainly, they could have an Anna and Elsa in both Magic Kingdom and Epcot to take up some of the slack.

Everybody values different things from their trips. If it's not a big deal to you, just be happy so many people are willing to spend one of their 3 FP reservations on this.

They could put 2 sets in each park and there would still be unfulfilled demand , but there would be a lot more satisfied guests! I think it's a shame that Disney doesn't do more to satisfy guest demand. I don't care about M & G's, but I love watching the interaction between the guests and characters. Obviously this is very important to a lot of people and I don't think guests should feel rushed.

I just spent 8 days through the Princess race weekend and 4 days after. I got many fast passes, but didn't use quite a few of them due to times that were given to me. Crowds were suppose to be between 2-4 the last 3 days and many of the rides had long lines by noon. Rides that use to be fairly empty are now always 30 or more minutes. It is a must to be there early or go to late nights.
I actually had a pass to see Elsa and Anna and have to say I didn't see any one rushed. They were both friendly to the children and even to me for a quick photo. I wanted a picture of my Frozen 5k medal with them. I am so sorry it wasn't the same for you.

I am so sorry it didn't meet your expectations!! :(

I also agree that "herding cattle" mentality is more prevalent than it has been in the past, but think that a total of 5 minutes from beginning to the end for any character pic/meeting is a lengthy time. When you think about it, at that avg percentage that is only 12 kids an hour. They certainly cannot meet the demand of visitors if they keep at that. I am prepared to be flamed, but oh well. jmo

I think longer stays (5+ days) tend to result in deminishing returns in terms of satisfaction.

I know for my family 3-4 park days is ENOUGH.
Get me away from the crowds (one of the reasons I stay off site) and out of the Disney bubble, which can be suffocating at times.

Agree 100% on the food, thats why it cracks me up people book a Bubba Burger 6months out. The food is mostly garbage and overpriced (another reason for offsite)

And count me in the "don't get M&G's with face people (who really look nothing like the cartoon)

We go every year in Feb too - and last year we had a less than stellar experience. For all the reasons listed above, the magic felt gone to us and was really not worth all the money we spent. We had told the kids at that time that we wouldn't come back for a few years. They are 12 and 9.

So we booked a DCL 5 day cruise for our winter vacation instead and we wanted to spend a couple of extra days in Florida. We gave the kids the option of Uni or Dis - and they chose Disney hands down (we have also been to Uni before). So for some reason, we agreed to one day in MK and one in Epcot. We had a blast! The troubles of last year were well forgotten and we had a super great time.

Maybe it was because we only did 2 park days this year - or maybe because our expectations had been lowered from the previous year. I don't know what it was exactly, but all this is to say that (while it's not the good old days and likely won't be again) - there is still good things and hope for good trips. Maybe taking a few years away is a good idea. Thanks for sharing your experience!

Uh oh...Garden Grill is one of the biggest things my wife is looking forward to. We did Garden Grill for the first time in 2000 on our honeymooon, and the food was delicious. We'll go no matter what because of the nostalgia, but sounds like we might be set up for a big disappointment.

I agree with everything the OP said. Our last visit was definitely the least magical ever. But I ADORE Toy Story Mania and could leave Buzz Lightyear!

We're going for 5 days and I can almost guarantee the one thing my daughter (5) will want to do most is meet Anna and Elsa. And I want to go now while that Magic to see the characters is still there!
