Drinks Around the World...are we insane???

I went to Epcot on January 17 and saw some of those custom "drinking around the world" t-shirts showing a list of Epcot countries with a check box next to each one. Not only was the list of countries not in alphabetical order, it didn't represent the Epcot geographical location of each country, either.

Not only am I baffled by one's desire to blow $100+ on drinks in one day, I'm bewildered by the fact that some of those guests participating feel the need to let others know that they're "drinking around the world." Should other guests congratulate them or something? Is "drinking around the world" an accomplishment on par with, say, getting a raise or passing the bar?

They're not passing the bar... They'd never complete Drinking Around the World that way.

DD will be 21 on our next trip and I'm definitely interested in sampling drinks from around the world, but I think we might make it a trip-long event, not one day :)

My son, DIL and myself have done it a couple of times. We first did beer around the world and combined that with snacks around the world. We did split the beers because I have problem drinking one beer much less all that would be needed. Sometimes, my son and DIL would get a different one at a country and I would sample both theirs.

The next time we did it we did non-beer drinks. Wine flights in Italy, France and German, to kill ya in Mexico, I think wine in Morocco and sigh - had to do beer in Canada and England, rice wine in China and Sake in Japan. We again combined this with snacking around the world and went sloooooow, enjoying each country.

We always do wine flights and to kill ya in Mexico no matter what.

My hint when doing this is make 2 rounds. Do every other country. I was doing well until I got to America, round 2, and had the Jim Beam slushy.

We did this last year during F&W. We drank around the world one day, then ate around the world the next. We got something to eat or drink at every kiosk on our passport. We were pretty proud of our completion stamp. We may possibly be luscious though. We will be going for round two in September.

Wow, some people have done it more than once! Color me impressed. Any tips for particularly delicious snacks to get with our drinks? I know there's a lot of amazing food in Epcot, but we won't have reservations anywhere so our snacks will have to be available at quick service locations.

For Food I would always suggest having a good breakfast and lunch. If you start when World Showcase opens you will be starting at 11am. You might want to scope out where you want to do lunch. I also like to stop at France to get food, the have a great bakery (YAY CARBS!), I also like the food in Morocco, you can also stop by Germany for a pretzel.

DGF and I gave this a shot. Started in Mexico, and she was done by Japan. We could have continued drinking, but it got to the point where we were half lit and didn't want to stumble around Disney World. During the whole experience we were a little tipsy by the time we got the the United States. We were definitely getting some eye rolling looks from parents, which is to be expected.

So all in all, go for it if you can handle a few drinks and don't mind catching some looks from disapproving park guests.

PS. Don't do the sake tasting, it'll get you a little too toasty.

Eh, whats it to you? Some people blow $100 on food, some on souvenirs, and others on booze. As long as they aren't getting drunk and bothering other guests, does it matter? I'm not sure those gentleman were trying to advertise they were doing it or to receive congratulations. Its like you have a problem with drinking. Besides, its a nice souvenir for them when they go home. If it made their trip magical, then thats what matters.

Eh, what's is to me? Well, to start, food and souvenirs don't get guests drunk. I'd prefer to enjoy Hollywood Studios without 5 drunken women screaming 120 decibels into my ear during A Frozen Sing-A-Long. I'd also prefer to enjoy Epcot without having to dodge drunken guests, stumbling around World Showcase, who feel that the only way to enjoy a theme park is to drink alcohol while there (or sometimes even before they arrive). Wow, dude...you drank 11 drinks in the course of X hours. You deserve an award and a few pats on the back!!!! Atta-boy!!!! I'm super-duper impressed by all of those check marks on that custom T-shirt you were wearing.

I don't have a problem with drinking--I enjoy a Stella Artois, a hard cider or a nice glass of Gevrey-Chambertin every once in a while. Do I absolutely, positively have to have alcohol while at Disney? No.

Alcohol + sense of entitlement having spent thousands on a DW trip = behavior that disrupts other guests' enjoyment of the parks

We are planning on doing this next summer. Both boys will be 21 and bringing a couple of friends, as well as DH and I. We will be in Epcot for 2 days so no need to do every country in one day. We have a spreadsheet with drinks we want to try. Tipsy Ducks in Love and the Grand Marnier slush. We have been trying our hand at mixology here at home so it will be nice to try the professionals' mix.

Skipping regular beers that we can get here at the store.

We are also traveling with DD18 and DS5 so we aren't looking to just get drunk. We want to try the beverages along with the foods.

There are also some drinks on the resort menus we are interested in. Thinking about making Drink passports as souvenirs versus the tshirts.

Oh, you mean like you have? If this was such a problem, Disney would crack down on it.
I didn't spend thousands, just $516 for my AP plus food and souvenirs throughout the year. I also don't get loaded in the parks. Therefore, I don't have a sense of entitlement. You see--it's not all about me and my needs. I don't absolutely, positively have to make sure I have a source of alcohol available once I enter a theme park.

Disney would crack down on it? Are you serious? Has Disney done anything about the mess left at River Country? Do cast members say anything to guests who are smoking outside of designated smoking areas? Crack down? Sheesh.

In my ideal world, I'd spread it over two days and alternate a drink and a snack in every country and then switch the next day. Although there certainly are some to skip, in which case extra pastry from France and extra maragrita from Mexico respectively!

Just got back from successfully completing drinks around the world, and I can confirm that it's a lot of fun and in no way disturbs anyone (at least when we did it). We kept to ourselves and just quietly took our time enjoying each pavilion. I think that's what I liked most about drinks around the world: not the drinks themselves, but how it kind of forced us to go through Epcot really slowly. We went hidden Mickey hunting, people-watched, explored all the little shops, and looked at all the cool buildings in each pavilion. Of course, you can do these things without drinking, but still I thought it was an interesting way to see World Showcase. There were definitely some rowdier groups attempting drinks around the world, but most of them had to quit around Japan. Obviously, if people on vacation have alcoholic options, some of them will abuse that, but it doesn't necessarily follow that anyone who drinks while on vacation is a problem.

Our next challenge is to eat around the world, and try all the best snacks in each pavilion! :thumbsup2

I think it is a great thing to do.
I did the monorail bar crawl last year with a friend it was great.
I just did not do it in Epcot because my friend was crazy about de food, and mix everything in one day didn't look quite right o_O

I completed DatW last year (though I did split about half the drinks with a friend) and it was a lot of fun! My BF and I are going this year. We're starting with breakfast at Akershus before the park opens and exploring a bit of either the pavilions or Future World first. We might actually start in France (they served champagne and mimosas starting at 10am at the bakery last year, but not so sure if that was an anomaly), and work counter clockwise to end in the UK. This would allow us to do lunch at Beirgarten, light dinner or snack in Mexico, and end everything at Rose & Crown (though, alas, there are no more reservations for 8PM).

There are EMH until 11PM in the park that day, but are EMH only for Future World?

Also, there certainly are obnoxious, entitled people in Disney who are that way stone cold sober. Some people are just entitled jerks to begin with and they'll probably remain that way if they're going on rides or doing DatW. It's pretty harsh to paint everyone as entitled who happens to partake in the DatW challenge, and not everyone gets loaded who does it. Some people are competitive and like challenges; I certainly do. That's why I have some other challenges during my trip like hitting 4 parks and 4 restaurants in 1 day (I'm calling it The Hobbit Challenge).
