PTR: A Spring Fling on the Dark Side ...2 Muggles Celebrate in Diagon Alley!

Gina, I'm thinking about the manatee tour groupon...have never done a groupon before. It limits which times of day you can use it. Have you done much research on the whole thing? I am wondering if a mid day tour is going to be a let-down. (The groupon allows for a 10 am or 2 pm tour.)

Hi Gina, loving your report :)

We are back to WDW in August (usually go December or October) so I remember your trip last year and your tips on styling in the heat. So you decided to go natural with your hair, and I have to say mine will be decidedly curly (or is that frizzy) in the heat!

We are going to a Universal too and taking my nephew with us, it's his first visit so I hope he enjoys everything as much as we do. I know my DD is hoping for a bit of freedom, and that they can go off together in the parks.

I looked at the SW BOGOF offer but as we are from the UK we can't buy it :( so we might not be going this trip, it's still up in the air.

Looking forward to your next update:yay:

Did you say OCD? Love it...a girl after my own heart. Can't wait to keep reading especially after your trip since we are planning our 1st "surprise" trip ever to Florida! I've got so much to learn can't wait to come along for the ride!

Hey there, thanks for joining in!!!

I highly, highly recommend a product by Tresemme called Keratin Smooth. Not sure if you have it in the UK or not, but it is readily available in North America.....so if you can't get it at home, then plan to drop by a Walgreens when you arrive. Its magic in a bottle, I tell ya. Frizz is gone and smooooth is in. I love it for both my natural waves and when I straighten my hair. I use the spray version (it says its for flat ironing, but it also makes my curls happy :thumbsup2) but they also have the whole line of products to accompany it. Pair the Tresemme spray with John Freida's Frizz-Ease shampoo and conditioner and not even the August humidity can give you a bad hair day.

Here's what to look for with the Keratin Smooth spray:

That stinks that you were unable to take advantage of the SW AP offer. I adore SW, but the exclusions on their offers are maddening. Hopefully they will come out with a good ticket deal where you can squeeze in a day's visit at a good price. With our Universal APs and the kids' wish for a parks-free Christmas vacation (they are aiming for no crowds and lots of relaxing), we're not planning on SW or Aquatica at all this year....and its killing me  . Unless, of course, they extend some rockin' good offers at Black Friday that I just can't resist :teeth: .

I've been a bit tardy on my updates of late.....hope to have another one up soon (maybe even later today).

Welcome, welcome! Glad to have you aboard for the chat :goodvibes .

A surprise trip....how fun! Much as would love to pull something like that off, I know I'd never be successful......I am terrible at keeping a secret :ssst: .

Just a word of warning, Orlando can be rather addictive ::yes:: . We went on our "once in a lifetime" trip in January 2009. We returned in January 2012, then again that August, then again that Christmas.....needless to say, it won our heart and its become our go-to vacation spot. We bought two timeshares (resale, of course!) after our 5th trip, and this May vacation will be Orlando adventure #7 (with trips 8 and 9 planned for later this year). Yup, its a sickness!! (or an obsessive-compulsive tendency :rotfl: .... I will admit to either).

Feel free to chime in with your thoughts and questions as we roll along!

Thanks Gina, just checked and we do have the Tresemme keratin spray so will pick one up next time I'm shopping and give it a try. Are you saying you don't think the Fozzy bear look is any good then!!:rolleyes1

Ha ha! Let's just say I have had more than my share of THESE kinds of mornings on our 3 August vacations:

Thanks I'm sure I will have a million and one questions before our trip. The biggest thing is that we decided not to stay at WDW on park and spend all of our time there. Hubby just couldn't wrap his mind around that one. So I'm now learning about the universal parks, beaches to explore and other outings. Our son is a huge gator boys fan, so I'm reading into those adventures now:) We will still head over to MK and downtown Disney since they will be new to us as well.

Coming to you live from the white and frosty north :cold: (yes, we got MORE snow last night!!):

It has been a long and frustrating month, and I’m hoping the arrival of March brings us more sun, less snow, temperatures that don’t freeze bare skin in under 5 minutes, and better health for all. My cough still lingers (its better, but not gone). Jake finally went to the doctor last Friday, and he’s now on $300 in medicine (antibiotics, nose spray and a puffer) for a sinus infection that got REALLY bad before he sought assistance. Steve goes to the doc at the end of this week for the same illness, so I’m guessing we’ll have pharmacy run #2 on Friday night. We are so sorely in need of warmer temperatures….but arriving slowly with no dramatic and rapid thaws, or we’ll be under water as the snow melts.

We’ve also been crazy busy here at my office….its RRSP season and it’s been insane over the course of the month. Definitely good for business, but exhausting nonetheless :faint:. Monday, March 2nd is the last day to make deposits for the 2014 tax year, so things should hopefully settle down a bit after that.

The positive side is that time is marching right along. I can hardly believe we leave just 9 weeks from tomorrow….64 days! I’m starting to think of all the little things we need to arrange, and trying to get things in place now so I have less to worry about later. Many of you know that I devote a weekend day to my mom each week….it’s something we’ve done since my Dad passed away in 2010. With no driver’s license or car, she needs to do her banking, groceries and general running around, so we pick her up and take her shopping every Saturday or Sunday. We also use the opportunity to treat her to a good meal somewhere…..living alone for so long, she tends not to put a whole lot of importance on good nutrition. I always worry about her missing our weekly expedition when we’re away, but this time I can rest easy: Jake and Sweetie have offered to step in and take our place. Jake knows how she likes to shop (older folks have a certain “process” that they like to follow, and heaven help you if you change things up!), and he jumped at the opportunity to take Nanny out on the town. He’s even going to take her out to dinner. She is THRILLED….and truth be told, I think it will be good for all of them. I know Mom will be missing me, so he will be good company for her when she’s a little more lonely than usual. Surely Jake will be missing his momma just a little (please don’t tell me otherwise…not sure my heart can handle that) so it will give him some company, too. Knowing that is worked out is a HUGE load off my mind. Yes, I have a sister and a brother, but sadly they are no help. My brother is in the middle of a nasty divorce and spends most of his free time on disaster control (he’s the assistant GM for a large manufacturing firm here in our city, so his free time is limited at best). My sister is just a selfish beast :rolleyes2 and won’t help anyone unless there’s a personal payback which benefits herself, so expecting her to take over in my absence would be ludicrous. I will be sure to bring the boy back something nice to show him my appreciation.

We’ve also decided to forego using our Roam Mobility phone, and get the Telus US travel pack for our phone. Its $20 more for our vacation than Roam, but it comes with a wee bit of data (not that we need it, really) in addition to matching the unlimited calling and texting of Roam. The benefit to the Telus add-on is that both Jake and Mom will be able to call us for free (rather than it being a long distance call to our Roam number). Not an issue so much with mom (she usually waits for ME to call HER when we are in Orlando) but definitely might be a huge benefit for Jake. For his first time home alone, I want him to be able to reach me directly whenever he needs or wants….if for nothing more than to say “hey mom, all is well, the house is still standing and I haven’t had to call 911 even once” :rotfl:. That peace of mind will be money well spent.

We’re still watching rental car prices on a daily basis, but there’s been nothing but upward movement so far. I’m expecting (hoping?) to see some changes within the next two to three weeks. In the past, that 6-8 weeks out mark has been a rather sweet spot for rental prices. Our Dollar reservation at $165 is still the front-runner, and well below the current prices of $300+ :drive:.

We’re also tweaking our tentative “itinerary”. Nothing major, just a few minor adjustments here and there. I will try to share the updated plans in another post later today or tomorrow.

And finally…my Big Steve has already met the weight goal he set for himself back at the beginning of January. His hope was to lose 30 pounds before we travelled, and he’s reached that milestone already . I am so proud of that guy! He is down 2 pants sizes and is feeling simply marvellous. We continue to swim every evening, he works out independently on a daily basis (treadmill, elliptical, weights) and our healthy eating endeavour has become a rather nice new habit. I can’t say I have seen the same weight loss result as Steve has, but I’m sleeping better and feeling physically stronger…..I am woman, hear me roar! (okay, not really …..but I feel great nonetheless).

Steve-o was saying last night that he is excited about doing the strong man game again while at IOA, assuming it’s still there. You know those things where you hit the target with a hammer and have to ring the bell to win a prize? He did that on our January 2012 trip, and won me a flying dragon that has since taken up permanent residence in our rec room, a symbol of a man’s love for his lady. He was worried he would be too old and out of shape to win me a second stuffie on this trip, but I think his faith has been renewed as he continues to shed his excess pounds. One lesson we will take away from the last time, though…..don’t play so early in the day. Otherwise, you have to carry that sucker around for a really l-o-n-g time. Perhaps it will be a fun way to end off our time at IOA instead.

You got white stuff too? So did we...snow day but since we are hitting the #7 mark and we have to make them up I can honestly say I'm over them and this white stuff and ready for some spring showers :umbrella:!

Well you've covered some ground there Gina. I thought British winters were bad but we go into panic mode when we have a few inches of snow, we're not seasoned veterans. I don't know how you stand it. Hope you thaw out soon.

It's good your mum is sorted, she will enjoy the company of Jake and Sweetie, I know my mum loves to go shopping with my DD.

Well I'm looking forward to the pictures of you 2 svelte muggles on holiday :o I can't find the willpower, just sat eating a bag of sweets now as I read the Dis!

Aww great update. Yes, we are also the land of ice and snow. Sunny though. wind not fun either. Makes everything seem colder.

Hi Gina!

Yay found your PTR! I admit, I've been a bit lost since they switched over the boards to the new format.

Sorry to hear that you've been sick. It's that time of year I guess. Great news on the health and weight loss. Don't you love how men drop weight like that? ;)

We just got back from a quick February trip last week, offsite, with one day at Uni, one at MK and one at Seaworld. The Uni and WDW parks were SO crowded, omg, the worst I have ever seen them! But we still had a blast and getting out the winter made it all worth it, even if only for a few days. Now I'm eyeing the end of August for another trip, I guess I have forgotten about the extreme heat of last August. We'll see. Thinking onsite Universal this time.

Glad I found your report! Very excited to see all of the Universal days!

I'll skip the "showers" and go right to the "flowers" :flower:. Heaven knows we have had enough snow to provide all the moisture those seedlings should need to get kick-started again this spring!!

Ha! I doubt we'll get anywhere close to achieving "svelte".....but I would be totally satisfied with "not pudgy" :teeth: .

Here is what we looked like this afternoon. I can hardly remember what our black roof looks like....its been covered in snow now for a month....

My bushes are long since buried. You can still see one of them, peeking out in the foreground of this pic. The others are under there somewhere :rolleyes1 :

Hello, my friend, glad to have you reading along!

lol, I hear you on the August heat. While I'm so glad we're booked for less steamy months this year (May, October and Christmas), I'm almost a little sad that we're taking a pass on August. After 3 consecutive years, I feel like I'm missing out, lol! It may be hot (like the surface of the sun) and hair-frizzingly humid, but it still has its own appeal. Go ahead...take the plunge! Book it! ::yes::

Totally can't wait to get back to Universal. Its been soooo long.

Gina, I caught up on some of your earlier posts. Definitely visit 4 Rivers! It's very good BBQ. It is pretty moderaely priced, but you should look for Groupons or other savinsgs options. We have one near our home. If I hear of any deals, I will let you know.

Wow, three trips this year! You must be in planning heaven, how fun.

Are the later trips with your son and his GF, or another couples' trip?

I haven't done much research just yet....though I'm going to be SUPER interested in your experience, if you decide to go ahead with it. We wouldn't be doing one until our Christmas trip (since that's "manatee season", so to speak), and hadn't decided yet if we were just going to visit Blue Springs or book a formal tour.

Have you thought about posing a question as to the timing of the tour on the Orlando forum on TripAdvisor? I am betting you might get some good advice there. Manatees aren't nocturnal, are they? (wondering if that might affect the timing....if they're less active during the day). Or, is it possible that the tours only run at 10 and 2? (I can't imagine them starting earlier during the cooler months)

Do share what you find out, though, if you wouldn't mind. You will save me a lot of reading later this year :rotfl: .

Manatee's aren't nocturnal; but they're not really "active"....well, ever. They spend their time eating, sleeping, traveling to find a new food source/warm water (in the winter) and breeding. When I visited Blue Springs in January, there were over 300 there, and probably about 95% of them were resting on the bottom. We did see 1 that was rubbing/scratching his back on one of the stairways they have built for swimmers to get in and out of the water; and another that was trying to eat vegetation that was above the water. A few here or there that were swimming in and out of the spring area; but most were just hanging out on the bottom and coming up to breathe as necessary. I really don't think that going at 10 am or 2pm would make a difference in their "active" levels; since they really aren't all that active, and they pretty much stay in the spring all winter (or during the cold snaps). But that's just my 2 cents.

That would be awesome!! I have been keeping my eyes peeled, but haven't seen them on either Groupon or Livingsocial just yet.

Any idea how long of a drive it is from Universal? Or from the Vistana? I get the feeling its not exactly "close by".

October is another couples trip....almost a replica of May (Universal, Universal, Universal) but with Halloween Horror Nights added in (our first time! so excited!). We plan to maximize our shiny new AP's on our two adults-only getaways. Assuming the budget can handle it, we hope to book the RIP tour for our HHN night to get it all in (especially when our HHN tickets are free with our Premier AP's).

Christmas will be all four of us....and no parks, on request from the whole family. We will be doing the Orlando Eye, the Sea Life Aquarium and Tussauds (already purchased those tickets), and Wild Florida (airboat ride and animal park). As always when the kids are along, I'm guessing there will be a lot of mini golf (I'll be eyeing up Groupon in the fall for some killer deals) plus, if the weather co-operates, a day at the beach. A trip to Blue Springs to see the manatees might also be in order. The rest of the time, we plan to relax and enjoy the amenities at the resort.....the kids are super interested in the Scuba Academy in particular. And there will be shopping...oh yes, there will be shopping :faint: .
