AKA "I About Died From The Cuteness"

February in Ohio is really starting to get to me, and I'm finding myself thinking more and more about **SPOILER ALERT** our upcoming cruise this July. But I think I'm to the point where I've planned all I can plan for now (online check-in isn't until April), so in the meantime...I'm going to go back and reminisce about last summer's cruise. And post about it here. Good? Good.
With that said...ahoy mateys! Arrrr ya ready to set sail?! pirate:

The Cast: My husband, Will (29), and me, Shannon (30). You'll find me posting more on the general Trip Reports section of this site, but even more than that, I'm usually hanging out in Events & Competition under the WISH Section of the boards. I lurk on the cruise forum daily, though.

This cruise (4-night Bahamian itinerary on the Dream) was sort of a two-part celebration, for both our anniversary (which was actually in May - 5 years!) and for Will finishing his second semester of grad school (15 weeks of coursework for two classes crammed into an intense 5-week session - yikes! :faint:).

It was interesting planning this trip - this was my second-ever cruise, DCL or otherwise (my first cruise was in September 2013 with a fabulous group of ladies onboard the Disney Dream!), and Will's first. I feel like I'm to the point where I know how to plan a WDW trip pretty well, but when it comes to cruises I still think of myself as a total newbie. In September I didn't have to do much thinking - I was surrounded by cruising experts and just sort of followed them around and asked them what to do. This time, in our little group of two, I was the expert. No pressure or anything. Ack!

However, I am a chronic OCD planner and, like I said above, I am lucky to have friends that are DCL experts (including our Travel Agent) - their advice and detailed trip reports that exist on other sites were invaluable to me. So I got by. :teeth:

OKAY SO...allll aboooooaaaard!

Day 1: Saturday, July 19, 2014, Part 1 (Travel)

Will finished up his classes on Thursday 7/17 (and got all As, booyah! :yay:) and I worked as normal that entire week. We were also busy clearing out the entire upper level of our house, as we were scheduled to get our hardwoods up there refinished while we were gone (totally worth it, the floors look amazing). So between school and work during the day and moving furniture and whatnot in the evenings, we were beat. And the house was a freaking mess, which always stresses me out. To say we were ready for this vacation is an understatement.

We got up around 8 or 9 on Saturday, took the monster pup to camp, and then set out for the airport.

Hi buddy!
IMG_4939.jpg

After an easy drive that included stops at Bruegger's and Starbucks, we parked and headed to the Southwest counter. This flight was one of those "AirTran operated by Southwest" deals, so when I checked us in the day before, we were assigned seats instead of a boarding group. For whatever reason, I booked our flights separately - maybe I booked one on points and the other using cash? Something like that. This meant we each had our own confirmation number and had to be checked in separately. Even though it took less than a minute, we ended up with seats that weren't together. In fact I think Will was 8-9 rows behind me. Boo!

Oh well, it's only a 2-hour flight. We'll live.

Anyway...when it was our turn to check in, we got our luggage taken care of and the Southwest rep realized that we weren't sitting together. We said it was fine, but he worked his magic and next thing we knew...

...we'd scored a free upgrade to business class! Awwww yeah. Thanks Mike L from the Akron-Canton Southwest counter! You're legit awesome. :thumbsup2

We waltzed through security like big shot business class people and grabbed Arby's sandwiches to eat during the flight. With our newly elevated status :rotfl2: we were among the first people to board and the flight attendant came around to ask for our drink orders. I may as well have had the phrase "I have never flown business class before" tattooed across my forehead. "We get a free drink? An alcoholic one?!" :hyper: I'm classy like that!

I can't say I was really in the mood for booze, but it was free so I wasn't going to turn it down! :drinking1
14999663804_bd9fc6c676_z.jpg

Nothing like chardonnay from a plastic cup. It tasted terrible. Hooray for extra leg room due to sitting in Row 1 though!

I'm not sure if it was the booze or our somewhat-cushy business class seats or the fact that our pilot was awesome (okay, that's actually what it was) but this was the smoothest flight I have ever had. When we took off I barely even knew we were moving. Two thumbs up! :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2

Using the time while you are waiting for your next cruise to write a trip report about the last one is a great idea!! :thumbsup2 I am looking forward to read all about your cruise. Seems like you were off to a very good start with being upgraded on your flight! And since you rebooked, it seems like the rest of the vacation was also wonderful. ;)

Looking forward to the rest!
Thanks!!
Awesome start, way to score the sweet upgrade right off the bat!
Thank you! I know, that was an excellent start to the trip! First time that's ever happened to me! :)
I'm on board! Can't wait to read more!
Thanks for reading so far! :goodvibes

Seriously...I am SO ready for the next one. Too bad it's still 5 months away.

Yeah I probably gave something away saying that we have another one booked, didn't I?? :teeth:

Day 1: Saturday, July 19, 2014, Part 2 (Welcome Home!! Saratoga Springs Resort)

I forget what time we landed...1:30ish maybe? Woohoo, hello Florida!

We headed to the Magical Express area with our Magic Bands (for our one-night, resort-only reservation) and hopped in line. After a few minutes we were on the bus and en route to WDW! Yeehaw.

15621264752_e0a6bc6b53_z.jpg

Unfortunately we had to sit through DME TV on the way. After seeing this video a few times now, I have come to the conclusion that I...sort of hate it. In particular I can't stand the woman that hosts it. I can't put my finger on why - she also hosts the runDisney events and I don't care for here there either. It's totally irrational...but I just...ARG. :sad2: I swear I'm not a mean person...really. :teeth:

Uh, anyway. Bring back the old Magical Express video!

15596739296_969959b8c0_z.jpg

The bus stopped at Old Key West, and our resort was next...Saratoga Springs!

I'd been wanting to stay at SSR for awhile now. In 2011 we were almost moved there when our third-party DVC point rental place lost our reservation. In 2013 I unexpectedly ran through the resort area when I accidentally managed to hop on a DME bus headed to the airport...when I was really aiming to go to the ESPN Wide World of Sports. :faint: As I ran through the resort in a panic, I remember thinking, "Well gee, this place seems nice." So why not give SSR a shot?

I found a DVC point rental place that does 1-night reservations (our normal place does not) and secured a studio. Almost immediately afterward I realized that this was dumb. Will had suggested we spend that evening at Downtown Disney (my Annual Pass was still good but we couldn't justify buying a 1-day ticket for Will that would only get a few hours of use), so SSR seemed like a good idea. But as the trip got closer I found myself wishing we'd gone with French Quarter or Riverside instead. Only because it would have been cheaper and we'd stayed at both Port Orleans resorts before, so they would not have been new places to explore. Here we were paying more to stay at new-to-us resort when we wouldn't even be in the room for 24 hours...and since we were heading right to DtD we wouldn't even be there to enjoy the resort and its amenities. Duh. I'll definitely re-think that in the future.

Anyway, we were at SSR. Check-in was easy (CM with an iPad) and we were off to our room. I'd requested a room in Congress Park and we'd gotten it!

On the way out of Carriage House we stopped to admire this model of (I think?) the Fantasy.

15620430535_0e987ee085_z.jpg

Suddenly a CM was right there next to us and started chatting. It started off fine, but quickly we both realized that we'd walked right into a DVC sales pitch without even realizing it. The DCL model was right next to the DVC desk! We've thought about DVC before (well, me more than Will, I think :rotfl2:) and decided it's just not right for us, so that combined with the fact that we were just coming off of our travel morning...well, we got a little less friendly quickly when we realized what was going on. It was awkward.

ANYWAY, after escaping, we headed back to Congress Park. It was HOT out, and a long-ish walk. But hey, it's what I requested!

The room was ready, both of our Magic Bands worked...yadda yadda yadda.

I liked the decor in here.

15434423577_d0010fa3b0_z.jpg

I wish I'd zoomed in on the bedding. It had scenes from The Fox & the Hound (Will's childhood favorite).

14999672744_38442aea6f_z.jpg

SSR has a whole "hooray for Disney movie horses!" vibe. I dig it.

14999679774_804dcc1703_z.jpg

Peeking through the trees we could see the river.

15596750066_eaf45dc126_z.jpg

14999676104_0e609bcbc5_z.jpg

While settling into our room at SSR I realized I'd forgotten to pick up our Magical Express documents at check-in. I briefly debated just leaving things up to fate since I was sure they'd be hanging on our door by the next morning...but in the end we decided to head back to Carriage House and pick them up.

Took a quick look at the pool area on our way.

15596760066_8d3c122755_z.jpg

The day before I'd been on the phone with the Magical Express people trying to set up transportation back to the airport the next morning. DCL has transportation from Disney resorts directly to port, but from what I'd read and from what our Travel Agent told me, it sounded like catching the bus at the resort meant that we possibly would not arrive at port until, I don't know, 1PM or something? During online check-in for the cruise I'd secured a port arrival time of 10:30AM and was really hoping to maximize our time on the ship. I'd read about people setting up an early Magical Express pick-up the morning of the cruise, heading to the airport, and then grabbing a DCL bus from there to get to port earlier. Yes, it would mean more bus time, but it would probably still give us an extra hour or so of ship time.

So the night before we left I'd called Magical Express to set this up. They were VERY confused initially, since I didn't have an outgoing flight number, but once I'd explained what I was doing and why ("You know DCL picks up at the resorts and you don't have to go back to the airport, right?") they said I was all set with an 8AM pick-up time. The documentation of this 8AM pick-up time is what I'd forgotten to pick up at check-in.

15620452105_188681c828_z.jpg

Well, it's a good thing we went back. The SSR Concierge (mostly likely a CP who looked exhausted, and possibly sick) had no record of us having a DME pick-up for the next morning. And from the way she was acting, there was nothing she could do about it. I had a mini freak-out before hopping out of line and calling DME again. The DME guy confirmed that there was no record of our pick-up in the system (um, thanks for nothing DME person I talked to yesterday! :headache:) and said he set it up for us for real this time. Back in line we went, and this time Tired/Sick CP did find it in the computer and printed out the ticket for us. WHEW. I’m so glad we didn't just wait for the paperwork to get dropped off! I know we could have taken a cab to the airport or whatever, but STILL. Why pay for the cab when there's DME?

Once we had that sorted out, and my heart rate began to normalize, we headed over to Artist's Palette to grab a light snack.

NOW it's a vacation!!!

15596762126_960009167d_z.jpg

15434444407_23faa0a390_z.jpg

Snacks in hand, we headed back to Congress Park to drop off that Magical Express documentation. After what had just happened, I did NOT want to lose it!

15434446597_c806ebb27b_z.jpg

All the while I was texting with a local friend of mine to let her know that we were heading to Downtown Disney - hooray for meeting up with friends! :)

I'd requested Congress Park as our building because I thought I'd read that it was super close to DtD, and an easy walk. It's been long enough that I don't remember exactly why, but that walk seemed to take FOREVER. Maybe the normal path was closed? Maybe we did take the normal path and I just didn't realize it? But it felt like we were wilting out there in that heat - coming from Ohio, where we'd been having a very mild (awesome) summer, it was quite a shock to our systems! And this was juuuuust before that new dock/walkway to Downtown Disney was open. That would have been nice to utilize.

Day 1: Saturday, July 19, 2014, Part 3 (Downtown Disney)

We made it to Downtown Disney! Yay us!

First stop was Goofy's Candy Company. We walked out with 2 bottles of water - who goes into a candy store and only comes out with water?!

15617784141_b110769843_z.jpg

We also headed to the new Marketplace Co-op. Ooohhhhhh man. This place is dangerous! Disney Vera bags, phone cases, Dooneys (was REALLY temped to get the Small World Dooney)...I could totally see dropping lots of cash here (and I have since then!). :teeth:

Loved these plates.

15620456445_409381196c_z.jpg

We also headed into Ghiradelli for an iced caramel latte. This is sort of a Downtown Disney tradition for me - heavenly!
15434331168_2eb6a2d57e_z.jpg

Next up was the Lego Store. We always have to stop here! We both oogled all of the Simpsons Legos and - not gonna lie - took notes on things we wanted to purchase when we got home (we have a little Lego Simpsons army AND the house currently on a shelf in our living room). :) Our dog thought the Ned Flanders Lego figurine was a chew toy, sadly...

Dinner tonight was at Wolfgang Puck Express - I believe we got a 20% Annual Pass discount here?

Will got the pesto chicken sandwich:

15434451177_d591154c26_z.jpg

I got the pepperoni pizza. YUM!
15434865400_d3599bdedc_z.jpg

After dinner, we headed out and my local friend, her husband and her kiddo arrived! It was sooooo great to catch up with them, and this was the first time Will was meeting them! In between chatting (mostly about upcoming trips, my friend's husband's job - he works for Disney - runDisney and cruising) we watched their 2-year-old run laps around an open area of DtD.

All too soon, it was time for everyone to head out. We all said our goodbyes...including the kiddo, who bade farewell to the Genie that resides on top of World of Disney!

Say it with me, now...I about died from the cuteness! :) I was soooo happy to see them, and so glad that they were awesome enough to brave DtD parking/Friday-night traffic to meet up with us. Yay!

Now it was time to head back to SSR. We thought about taking the boat, but realized that at that time the boat only stopped in one area of DtD...waaaaaay over by Cirque du Soleil. Too far to walk. So we journeyed back to SSR on foot.

Bye-bye, DtD!

15620460915_b4fc38cef8_z.jpg

By the time we made it back to Congress Park, I was really craving a Mickey Premium bar - I mean, can ya blame me?! So we journeyed on to Artist's Palette.

NOM! Will agrees!

Alright, back to the room!
15000299483_07a684519b_z.jpg

We packed up, tagged our bags and got ready for bed. Embarkation day up next!

Love your TR. My husband spent some quality time with a Lego set and the Simpson's house is on a shelf in the office. Cant't wait to here more.

Thank you! :)

Yep, the Simpson's house is proudly displayed on our built-in shelving in our family room. And after some Googling we found a package that includes all of the Simpsons characters in Lego form. :) Excellent purchases.

Can't wait to read more!!! Wish we had some Simpsons Legos. Hard to justify Legos for mom & dad with a 4 year old & 3 year old in the house. We live on planet duplo.

I had no idea that there are Simpsons Legos!! I wonder whether my brother in law knows about this...

Seems like you did a lot of walking - but I think your many walks to the Carriage House from Congress Park made you think that the walk over to Downtown Disney is longer than it is. Of course I was there when the new bridge was open, so maybe it was because of the construction. But I can assure you that the Carriage House is further away from Congress Park than Downtown Disney!! Just in case you are thinking about staying there again in the future! We really loved walking over to Downtown Disney! :thumbsup2

We have no excuse for having Legos in our house, seeing as it's 2 adults and a dog...:rotfl2:
Joining in!

It was a long walk from Congress Park! And the new bridge was not open...it opened the week after we were there. Maybe we were missing some other route that was shorter, but we ended up walking to that path the runs along the main road to DtD and going that way. And it was HOT out that day, so that made the walk a little less pleasant than I'm sure it normally is! :faint: We're sort of wimps when it comes to the extreme heat though...good thing we were in Florida in July. :rolleyes2 :rotfl2:

Day 2: Sunday, July 20, 2014, Part 1 (Traveling to Port Canaveral)

This is a fabulous thing to see when opening the DCL app!!
15438097678_dc30041d19_z.jpg

I forget what time we woke up this morning...6:30 or so? Early. :faint:

But YAY, it's embarkation day!!! :yay:

After packing up the last of our stuff, we said bye-bye to SSR. Maybe we'll try this place again when we are in Disney for a longer trip.

We rolled our suitcases to Artist's Palette and got there at about 7:15 - right on schedule. Along the way lots of CMs were out touching up paint and watering plants. Knowing it would be awhile before we'd have lunch, we grabbed a couple of snacks (Mickey Rice Krispie treats and Chip & Dale's Mountain Mix...complete with M&Ms, just like you'd find in the mountain! :thumbsup2) and both chose the Bounty Platter breakfast, since it seemed pretty substantial. And coffee, of course.

15433822779_b1643344df_z.jpg

This may be the worst meal I've ever had at Disney. Biscuit was good, Mickey Waffles were perfect as usual...at this point it's been long enough that I forget why, but everything else was borderline inedible. I had practically the exact same meal at Sunshine Seasons in February 2014 and it was tasty, sooo...what's your deal, Artist's Palette?

At least they had this cutie in the gift shop!
15003234294_2974a2fbc7_z.jpg

One of my favorite Disney characters. He's precious. :) The cuteness...

After eating what we could stomach and making one last bathroom stop, we rolled our suitcases down the hall to the Carriage House, giving the DVC area the side-eye the entire way. Thankfully it wasn't staffed yet. We headed out front and our *motorcoach* was sitting there waiting for us - right on time! We told the DME driver we were on our way to the cruise area, and he said for us to wait for the second stop.

After a not-so-smooth DME ride back to the airport filled with DME TV :crazy2: the driver pointed us to the cruise line waiting area. We were there at maybe 8:50 or so and the cruise line check-in wasn't due to open for another 10 minutes. People were already lined up waiting to check in and porters were there ready to take our bags, so we handed them over. At this point we were marveling at how easy things would have been had we just stayed at the MCO hotel the night before, so that's what we're doing for this year's cruise. BUT - we're also adding a Universal day in beforehand! :yay: I NEED to see Diagon Alley in person, and we both NEED to see Springfield, so a Universal day is a must.

Once our suitcases were handed off we hopped in line. Soon we were checked in (needed our passports/birth certificates + picture ID for this) and were heading out to our bus!

15600302286_159d17d711_z.jpg

The ride began, along with the DCL video...and that video is AWESOME. :lovestruc :lovestruc :lovestruc It's just like the old Magical Express video, where the characters are getting ready for their trip (this time they are, obviously, getting ready to take cruise). Packing bags, getting the swimsuits ready, etc.

Basically what I'm saying is...I about died from the cuteness. :goodvibes I cannot put into words how happy this video made me. Love it.

We drove along and eventually got our first glimpse of the Dream from afar...no pictures, unfortunately. I tried to contain my excitement, but it was tough. She's a beaut. :lovestruc

Day 2: Sunday, July 20, 2014, Part 2 (Waiting to Board!)

The bus pulled in to Port Canaveral just as Disney's cruise terminal building was opening at 10AM...we seriously could not have done better with the timing that morning. Security was a breeze.

15438405100_b616b78395_z.jpg

We were maybe the 5th or 6th party to check in and got a sweet boarding group number - boarding group #2! Bam!

The CM welcomed me back and gave me my Castaway Club lanyard! Is it weird that I was pretty excited to get this?! :teeth: It's okay, be honest. I now use it to hold my work ID. :)

(Sidenote: I think it's interesting how DCL recognizes repeat cruisers, where WDW makes more of an effort to recognize first-time visitors. As a returning cruiser, wearing my CC silver lanyard, I got a LOT of attention from CMs - welcoming me back, asking when my last cruise was, what cruise number was this for me, etc. It was nice but I started to wonder if Will, a first-time cruiser wearing an old lanyard of mine from work, was feeling neglected. When I asked him about it partway through the cruise he seemed surprised and said he hadn't noticed it at all...but it definitely stood out to me.)

So now we had a little over an hour to kill. Will was very, very nervous for this cruise - the thought of being out in the middle of the ocean freaks him out, so much so that I'm still sort of surprised that he agreed to try it out at all. He must really like me. :) For some reason I thought maybe seeing the Dream up close would be reassuring to him. I'm not sure why - maybe seeing that it's big and solid, just like a floating hotel? Who knows. Anyway, we headed out to the observation deck and he was really stunned by the size of her. Pictures just don't do it justice...you just don't realize until she's right there. I'm not sure it eased his nerves any, though.

15438001467_f93f1c9ab0_z.jpg

15623998725_fa66485c21_z.jpg

The heat was getting to us, so we headed back inside after a few minutes. Since I knew Will was nervous, I found I myself was getting increasingly nervous in the weeks leading up to the cruise. I was really scared that he would be miserable the entire time, and I would feel sooooo guilty if that happened. This whole thing was my idea, so it had to go well so that he'd get as hooked as I am...hence the "schemin'" in the title of this report! :teeth: (I'm thinking this pressure I was feeling for everything to go smoothly contributed to my DME freakout the day before in a big way!) For whatever reason I was most afraid that he'd get motion sickness (why, I have no idea - he doesn't have a super sensitive stomach or anything), so a precautionary dose of Bonine while we were waiting in the terminal was a must. Thankfully neither of us ended up needing it at all for the rest of the week.

Doors are still closed...
15437877958_625f86da2d_z.jpg

I spent some of that waiting time taking tons of pictures of model of the Magic. At the time I was planning on a Med cruise on the Magic with some family members...sadly that ended up falling through. Luckily we have a back-up option! :teeth:

15437368889_b6efd2cbce_z.jpg

15600319176_672de1f5eb_z.jpg

That 11- or 12-night Mediterranean itinerary on the Magic is still my dream cruise...I'm hoping that'll work out for me and Will at some point.

15624858252_4b907b8110_z.jpg

Eventually the Captain came out to pose for photos!

Ahoy!
15003263134_fd52397898_z.jpg

I knew he'd most likely switch out with Minnie soon, but we didn't hop back in line for whatever reason. When Minnie did come to relieve the Captain of his meeting and greeting, she happily skipped over and patiently waited for him to finish with the current family.

Mid-skip:
15624869692_8e523ffd4b_z.jpg

Excitedly waiting:
15624870652_1e0a6ab3c2_z.jpg

Once Mickey was done, Minnie frolicked over to him, and they hugged and "smooched." :lovestruc And I about died from the cuteness...and kicked myself for not getting a picture!!!
