Expedition Everest Challenge 2015 - EEC 2015

Thank you! So does everyone do the scavenger hunt or do some op-out and go straight for the party? Is it just for fun or is there an advantage to completing the puzzles/questions? I know my teenager will enjoy the obstacle course but not sure about the scavenger hunt yet. :):)

The Scavenger Hunt is AWESOME! The way the course is laid out you can't skip the scavenger hunt. It is so much fun though! It was my first 5k ever!

We missed the registration for the race and we are going to be there that weekend. Anyone need a team member? Anyone willing to share the discount code for park tickets?

Just FYI, I just looked over the tickets and it looks like everyone with a ticket will have to verify that they are with a race participant when the tickets are validated.

I have been bad with my running lately. I started running in July 2012 (couldn't even go a 1/2 mile:worried:) and worked myself into the 2013 W&D 1/2 Marathon:woohoo:. Unfortunately, the motivation to run vanished after that race and I've let myself go. Now, I am 20 pounds heavier and back to where I started. I'm a little frustrated, but it is not going to get me down because I've done it before and I can do it again:thumbsup2.

I am teamed up with my DD9 for the EEC. She had knee surgery in January 2014 and had a LONG recovery. In fact, she was just cleared to start running in November. So, in preparing for this race, I am trying to find the best way to stay within the 16-minute pace without completely stressing my DD's knee. We've always done the run/walk method but I'm not sure how I should proceed. Before her diagnosis and surgery, she did one, untimed 5K fun run so she has a small comprehension of the distance involved.

That being said, I have two ideas for how to "train" with her...

1) Start with shorter "runs" (1-2 miles) with set intervals, like run 1 minute, walk 2 minutes, and see what her pace is. Then, tinker with the intervals until she can go the 1-2 miles with a pace under 15:00. That way, the extra mile can be covered in a slightly more leisurely pace if she runs out of gas.

...or...

2) Take her on the 3-mile loop around our neighborhood at her own pace, using the "run or walk when I feel like it" method, and try and improve the pace on each outing. This way, she can get used to the 3 mile distance and she will know how far and how fast (or slow) she can go.

I've been so concerned with how SHE is going to do, I've kind of forgotten that I need to get my own butt in shape. I went out yesterday and it was a little discouraging. Like I said, I've put on 20 pounds so my 12-minute pace is gone. I did 1.6 miles yesterday at a 13:15 pace. I had the dog with me and it was so cold so I am not disappointed in my time. I am disappointed that the 1.6 miles felt like it was all I had in me:(. I truly am starting back at square one. I'm right back at the "I can't believe I ever went 13 miles" point. I have to make sure that *I* can finish the 5K:lmao:.

I am not a trainer ,coach or dr- just a mom :thumbsup2 and I like walking the 3 miles, maybe every Saturday. And then start adding the run/walk. That way she is constantly improving instead of achieving a goal of time then creating a new goal. Plus, it would be less stress for her knee over the next 4 months.

Good luck! My DD7 wants to do the Jingle Jungle next year (she has done kids races since 2) but I am not sure...

Is there any way to register even though it is sold out? Our family just found out about this and we would love to participate

There's an app called "couch to 5k" that I used with my son last year, and am using again with my son and daughter this year (they are 11 and 9). It does a good job of training one up gradually. My son ran (and walked) the 5k distance last year with no problem (other than it was 45 degrees, IN MAY IN ORLANDO!!??). Crazy weather.

Another mom here with what worked for my daughter. We did the 10 miler in October. We followed Jeff Galloways plan and it worked very well for us. We are also doing this race. My daughter hasn't been running because of an injury. We will start running next week.

We will do 2 thirty minute runs/walks during the week outside or at the gym. Then on the weekends we will do a "longer" run. I will gradually build up to about five miles. Some weekends we will take a long walk in addition to a run just for "fun".

The motivation of a Disney run is very inspiring. She will do great. Good luck!!!

Wondering the same. I'd like to sign up if possible. I know they do charity entries and stuff for the bigger runs/races but dont know about this one. May be there for my birthday weekend now and would like to do it while there. If anyone knows, please post. Thanks.

My DD9 is the one who originally wanted us to do this race as a family. Now that the registration is looming (and training needs to begin), my DD11 is saying she doesn't want to participate:sad2:. In reality, I think she just doesn't want to train for it:snooty:. We were planning on registering as two 2-person teams...DH and DD9 and me and DD11.

What happens if we register as a team and then DD11 really decides she does not want to do it? I would get a KNO sitter for her and she would have to stay in the room while we go have fun. I just want to make sure that if one person on the team backs out, the other person is still eligible to run. I know that the fees are non-refundable, which would sting a bit, but I'd rather have her sign up and then back out rather than not sign up and decide she really wants to do it after registration is closed.

Browsing through all the pages from the beginning, thought I would answer this one...

Last year we were never asked where our team mate was, so I don't see why you couldn't just run with your DH and DD9. I would suspect your DD11 will not want to be left behind though, unless the KNO sitter is a lot of fun!

We had a blast last year, even with the rain and all. Can't wait for this year's event!

I don't think you need to worry at all. I recommend sticking with the run-walk-run method for training and racing. We did this event last year, one week after my partner was cleared to run after having knee surgery. Adrenaline goes a long way to help fuel you along! Don't be afraid to do short intervals. We usually do two min run-one min walk when we do 5k and 10Ks. This last weekend we went a bit crazy in the head, and did the Star Wars 10K using the 2:1, but also did the half the next day (the medals were too cool to pass up!). We dropped our pace to 60 sec run-30 sec walk, and we finished only slightly slower than usual! Our 10K average pace was 12:30 and the half was 13:05! (Not counting photo stops! :rolleyes1

The moral, I believe, is train without pain; do what you can do comfortably. For the race, take it easy to begin with, and if you feel good halfway through, or in the last mile, then pick it up. It's all about finishing and feeling good enough to enjoy the finish. Walkers can and do finish and have just as much fun as runners. This is supposed to be FUN!

Hey guys, I know the EEC is sold out, but I was wondering of it is possible to stay in a "wait line" or get "tickets" from people that gives up on their registration.
I'm just having the worst time of my life and Disney is always the best place to feel better, right? But as I'm going alone, it would be AWESOME to run the EEC!
Tks!

Legally, no.

The American Association for Cancer Research may still have bibs...there is a $300 fundraising minimum.

I wish we were able to trade or give our bibs away... I have one that I will likely not use (probably moving our dates) and I would love for someone to be able to use mine. :(
Oh! I'd love to buy your bib! :(
I think Disney should create a waiting list or something! :(

That would be so nice... they offered insurance on the registration so they must know its a problem! (I did get it, it was $7 and I will be trying to use it too so I am so glad I did... it just feels wrong that its basically a wasted spot now when someone else who really wanted to and could run it should!)
