The short answer is yes. It can take 1-2 weeks for Disney to input your contract into the system and load your points. You used to be able to call Member Administration and get your membership number over the phone once your points were loaded. But Disney's policy has changed and you now have to wait until you get your membership packet in the mail to get your number. And it can take 2-3 weeks to get that packet.

We just got our member number last week for our first DVC purchase and this was our closing timeline:

Closed on 1 March
Confirmation of the transfer of ownership in Disney's system on 11 March
Received member number in the mail on 15 March.

If you provided you SSN on any of your closing documents so that it could be added to your DVC member account you could probably get MS to give you your number over the phone. We were never asked for my SSN on any of our closing paperwork so it isn't on our account. I tried a couple of times to get my member number over the phone and they said without my member number they could look up my account by the last 4 of my SSN, but since my SSN isn't on our account they weren't able to get my number and we had to wait for it to come in te mail.

How do you know when "Confirmation of the transfer of ownership in Disney's system" occurs?

Still waiting on my membership number, and looking for any confirmation that it is on the way.

Thanks!

Also wondering how to confirm in the Disney system before membership arrives

You call DVC about 10 days after closing, select option 3 on the phone menu to get to Member Accounting (not Administration, and ask them for your member number. If you aren't in the system, call daily until you are. Once you have your member number, ask them to transfer you to the group that can provide you with your access code for the web site.

I've purchased 2 contracts via re-sale, and i started calling DVC member services about a week and a 1/2 after closing, and they were able to give me my membership number over the phone. The actual mailing packet from DVC took forever to arrive at my home. I also checked the comptroller website to see if my deed was recorded.

Thanks for the info! Today I am at 14 days since closing and they still do not have my information in the system. Was hoping to book a trip by now. I guess I will be waiting another week. Thanks again!

I closed on 8/14 and have been calling every day since Monday to get my member #. Finally got it today, but the points are not yet loaded so I can't go online to do anything. They told me to call back Tuesday, but I'm going to call tomorrow and Sunday because I'm also looking to book a trip.

Did you get the information to set up your online account? There's no need to keep calling if you did. The points will show up in a day or so.

I have my member # but they told me I can't get the access code to register for the website until the points are loaded. They are still not loaded as of today. The person I spoke to today also suggested that i try again on Tuesday, so I'm guessing the people responsible for loading the points don't work on the weekends

When I called on Friday, they told me nothing would happen again until Tuesday. Also if I was not in the system by 3pm, then it was unlikely I would be added later in the day.

Good to know you are now in. Since I closed a day later, maybe I will be in by Tuesday.

That's interesting about the 3pm deadline. Good luck on Tuesday! Hopefully we'll both be getting good news!

Okay, so we closed on 8/25, but recorded on 8/29. Which counts as the starting point for the 10-21 days before we receive our member #? Also, there is a separate Welcome Letter? Or is that only if you purchased direct from Disney?

You'll get a welcome letter with your member number and a separate letter with the information necessary to set up online access.

The 10-day timeframe is a rough estimate, and probably is best based on the recording of your deed. The closing agent sends the information to the county and Disney, so, it seems best to base that on estimated receipt rather than the day it's sent.

SCREAM! :crazy2: Someone said waiting for ROFR was the easy part - the stuff that comes after is harder. Boy, were they ever right!!
