Coincidence? Major Disney fan? One of you?

My daughter and I were having Chick-fil-a for lunch yesterday and my daughter, being a typical four-year-old was very excited to see a little baby sitting a few tables away. I noticed that the mom had one of those embroidered diaper bags and that the baby's name appeared to be Ariel. No big deal, right? Then, the mother started trying to get her son's attention who was playing on the playground. She calls him. She hits on the glass and yells, "Sebastian!" So, it would appear that her children are Ariel and Sebastian. Being a Disney lover, I smiled a bit to myself. I figure this is too much to be a coincidence, right? Or do you think it was one? Or, is it one of you?;)

Funny!

If they have another baby, what are the name choices? Scuttle? Ursula?

I actually like the name Sebastian.

Edited to add: In answer to your question - I would vote No on coincidence. Even if you weren't a Disney fan, you'd have to have lived under a rock not to know/realize Ariel & Sebastian are major characters in a Disney film. They aren't obscure names from a movie that few people have seen.

Let's just hope they don't go with Flounder!

I have a friend who was paranoid that someone would grab her kids so she never called them by their real names when they were in a store, restaurant or park.

Her son she called captain hook and her daughter she called sleeping beauty.

It was so funny to hear her son ask her when he was about 6 if she would ever call by his real name.

That is too cute! Both names that can stand on their own yet display the obvious affection for The Little Mermaid.

I have a neighbour who lives a few houses down from me who named her little girls Alice, Aurora, and Ariel. Alice is her step-daughter, and they didn't even think about the Disney connection until after they had Aurora. When Ariel came around, they just decided to roll with it.

My friend's four year old nephew is also named Flynn Eugene...:rolleyes1

Just wait until they are in school. The children won't let it go. It will be constant jokes.

Poor kids.

Eh there are more than enough weird names out there. Kids don't get harassed by their names to the degree people like you always threaten. Luckily.

I know kids named Ariel and Sebastian (not siblings) and have never heard anything about anyone giving them a hard time.

As far as it being intentional, who knows. Didn't Jennifer Lopez or someone name their kids Max and Emme which also happens to be the names of characters on a cartoon? I doubt that was intentional.

Apparently my childhood didn't happen? :confused3

Names are the easiest thing to pick at, if another 9 year old gets the notion they don't like you.

However:

I think, so long as the children are aged far enough apart that children in their grade won't know about the other sibling, it won't be so obvious to possible bullies though. Hardly anyone knew who my older brother was. I don't see a Sebastian getting picked on very easily, as it is a very common name. Ariel isn't as common, but it's pretty, so who knows.

With so many children being named uniquely, it'll be harder for bullies to use it as an excuse for bullying.

I spend about 100 days a year in classrooms and dealing with bullying etc. A name might be a silly thing to make fun of for a quick hit, but they are not the cause of constant bullying. Unless there are underlying issues. If your kid is named Pete and comes in unclean every day "stinky Pete" is a given.

An Ariel in a class if misspelled, made up names won't cause an eyeblink.

As someone who spent her entire childhood up until highschool being bullied, my name was one of the biggest bullying factors.

It's a boring name that everyone's mother has as a middle name: Lynne.

I was called a lot of things, the biggest one being called Leonard instead of Lynne, to make me feel like I looked like a boy instead of a girl when clearly I didn't. It happened on almost a weekly basis.

But I DO agree that Ariel probably won't be made fun of. But then, who thought someone could make fun of Lynne? ;)

I also recall in grade 8 the boys calling a Rebecca "Backseat Becca"... and THAT was a huge one, not a one-off tease.

This reminds me of something my dd told me. My dd16 came home from school one day last year and told me that she had had a presentation from the police at her school where they could ask the police officers questions about whatever they wanted. My dd said that one of the officers started talking about how they were bullied as a child because their name was Ariel and their best friends name was Sebastian! The thing is Ariel was a boy which probably made it a lot worse. I love names that are disney related but are subtle. I certainly would never name a child after one if the 7 dwarfs! But I think Ariel and Sebastian are cute. And if they had another boy they could always name him Eric!

Eric for a boy :)

Kids can make fun of any thing if they want to. I'm Elizabeth and this kid used to call me Lizard Breath.

Arista, Aquata, Adella, Alana, Attina, Andrina

Okay, I'll be the bad guy and admit it. If I was sitting in a CFA and realized a girl was named Ariel, I wouldn't bat an eyelash. A boy named Sebastian wouldn't get my attention. But if I saw a sibling pair named Ariel and Sebastian, I would have laughed. It's just ridiculous. When those kids are in school or even working someday, and someone asks, "What is your brother's/sister's name?" and they hear Sebastian/Ariel, they'll get laughs and a lot of, "You're kidding, right?"
