Hi All,

My husband & I are currently looking into purchasing a DVC. We've started to do a lot of research & have found it to be very overwhelming. Are there benefits to buying direct from Disney vs a resale from a broker ? I'm not sure if the following is true, but I was told by someone that if I purchased a resale that I would only be able to use it strictly for Disney related resorts and no other RCI resorts. Is there any truth to this ? Thanks in advance for all your advice.:)

You can use RCI, but not cruises, Disney adventures and I think it's called classic collection (value and moderate resorts that are used for non-DVC), which uses nearly double the points of DVC props anyway. It all depends on where you want to vacation. If it's only DVC resorts then go resale, I did. I saved $55 per point for AKV. Just a little or BIG something for you to think about.

You could still use resale points at RCI trade-ins, just not most of the other trade options such as the cruise or using your points at non-DVC resorts. These options are generally considered poor uses of DVC anyway as it would be cheaper to rent out the points and pay cash for the stay (in most cases). I'd suggest you take several months researching DVC before making a decision.

As mentioned earlier you can use resale points for RCI but from what I understand the choices are somewhat limited. DVC points have the most value at DVC resorts so if that is not your main objective DVC may not be for you.

Just starting your research can be daunting but hang in there. Lots of good information here and other places. Even if you decide you want to buy resale it might be a good idea to schedule a tour at the Preview Center at SSR during your next trip. You can get great fundamental information about the system and a low pressure pitch.

Keep reading and learning and it will become clearer. Good luck!

Hi!

DVC points purchased through resale cannot be used for items such as Disney Cruise Line (DCL), non-DVC Disney hotels, and Disney sponsored vacations.

Most will tell you these options are very poor uses of DVC points because the exchange rate offered by Disney is pretty bad. If you want to save money (which is the primary reason to buy DVC points), the best thing to do is rent your points out to someone (many DVC rental brokers offer to pay you $11/point to rent your points) and then use the cash proceeds to purchase items such as DCL directly from Disney.

Generally, purchasing DVC points directly from Disney is easiest.

Generally, purchasing DVC points through resale (i.e. a broker) saves a lot of money, often many thousands of dollars.

Each buyer needs to make the decision whether the money saved through resale is worth the extra hassle.

Hope this helps!

And that being limited is for everyone, not just resale owners. DVC doesn't offer its members a full RCI membership - they act as brokers. That means you work through member services to secure an RCI reservation and they only offer a limited number of properties.

If you want to trade, buy a timeshare that offers a full II or RCI membership.

Excellent advice DizBub. I wanted a dis timeshare, toured SSR, then purchased resale. I also agree with RCI info; nice to have as an option but probably better without dis brokering.
