Malaysia Airlines Flight Missing ... Now reporting 4 Americans possibly on board.

Why is the United States investigating? Neither of the passengers that had their passports stolen were American, it didn't happen over US airspace, nor does it involve an American airline. :confused3

There are probably plenty of reasons for US to be involved.

I was just reading about the Air France flight that went down in the ocean. I didnt remember this but it took two years to find that planes wreckage.

They found the wreckage within a couple days, debris and bodies started to surface. It took 2 years to get the black boxes from the bottom of the ocean.

Ok. I disagree, but I'm not going to argue about it.

I hope the wreckage is found and the families are able to get some answers about their loved ones.

It was manufactured in the US by Boeing. The US government has the best experts. IF Boeing is found to be responsible, they may have to reimburse costs. They would probably try to get it back from the airline if they are found responsible.

They found some bodies and some debri in the initial days but it took two years to locate the main wreckage

When Air France Flight 447 went down in the Atlantic Ocean in June 2009, bodies and some parts of the plane were found within two weeks, but it took two years to locate the main wreckage.

CNN just said this one should be easier if it's in the sea, it's much more shallow than the Atlantic Ocean.

Add in that there were 2 passengers on board using stolen passports and it looks suspicious. One listed from Italy and one from Austria. (the stolen identities)

.

It is odd of 2 people with stolen passports from 2 different countries being on the plane at the same time are almost non existent.

True, but If it were a terrorist act, wouldn't a group would have claimed responsibility by now...generally speaking?

If it were a large terrorist organization yes, they would. But it could just be one or two crazies that worked together. Remember the guy with the bomb in his shoes? If he had succeeded, we wouldn't have known why that plane went down for a long time.

The shoe bomber worked for Al Qaeda, IIRC.

This is really not true at all. Kuala Lumpur, Beijing and many cities in that region are huge hubs of drug trafficking. The head of Interpol testified that they were tracking at least 6.7 million stolen passports in 2007.

It does seem odd that no one has claimed responsibility if this was a terrorist act. It seems that usually even groups that have no involvement in events pipe up.

This whole thing is strange. No distress calls, no wreckage...nothing but a few oil slicks that might have nothing to do with the plane.

As for the US involvement, I would imagine that a lot of countries are involved in the investigation. The US is just the one that we will hear the most about.

I'm sure any country that had a citizen on board will be involved in some way.

The American NTSB will be heavily involved because it's a Boeing plane, it was built in the USA, and is heavily used by US carriers, in US Airspace. NTSB also has what's probably the best lab in the world for this type of work.

And now there is a rumor of a third stolen passport on board from Russia. Who knows? I hope it's nothing but we'll see.

I heard on one of the news stations that China asked the US for assistance since we have the experts & the equipment.

This is such a sad story and reminds me of the British Airways flight that disappeared on the way to Paris in 2009.
