Anybody from Alabama ? Help with Questions

No I did not know. You gave no indication that you knew anything but being high and mighty and judgemental on what I should do as a parent. Which makes your comment earlier even worse. You could have been helpful and show how much you knew about your state and why are you so proud of being from Alabama. But instead you chose to be rude.

So that choice is now yours. You can give me more information that I can share with DD to get her more excited about presenting Alabama to her class or you find another thread to be judgemental and trollish on.

:surfweb: I think you have plenty of information. My input is unneccessary. You can get back to working on your, er....your daughter's project.

As the mother of HS & college aged children, I found her response completely understandable because I think the project sounds ridiculous and I'm not sure I find it credible. I can vouch she wasn't trolling for anything. . . .

I have one child and she is 5. All I know is her school. I have not live through High School or College nor do I have multiple children. Other parents I know with children this age are at her school so I live in a bubble of what other schools do and what is credible or acceptable at other schools.

All I can say is she is graded on this project and this is the project we are faced with for this semester. It is a family project. It is up to her mom and dad to find the information. Share it with her. Get her excited about Alabama that she is excited to tell Alabama's story to her classmates.

I will admit that some of the questions are personal interest (like police hats) but we also do road trips and if Alabama sound cool enough to visit then I want DD to be excited to spend several hours in the car to get there.

This board is helpful because its worldwide. When her project next year is about a different country. I will probaby be back asking about the culture from an insider about that country. For right now, we are all about Alabama.

She will chose what she wants to talk about based on the information I can find. If its a coloring page, she will color it, and then glue it on the posterboard. If its a postcard then we will talk about the postcard, who it is from, and what the postcard is about. she will then glue it herself to the posterboard. We will then practice for her presentation enough that when she sees these pictures she knows the story. Five minutes is a long time for someone so young so I need alot of information.

There are several foods that are uniquely Alabama such as Golden Eagle Syrup, Golden Flake Chips, Dales Steak Seasoning. I am sure there are many others I just can't think of any off the top of my head. Alabama has a very diverse state as others have said from the Mountains to the Beach Alabama has it all. Weiss Lake or Lake Weiss (you see it both ways) is famous for Crappie fishing. The movie Failure to Launch was partially filmed in Cherokee County Alabama at Cherokee Rock Village which is very popular with rock climbers from around the world. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

Conecuh Sausage....yummy

THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Are there any current digging sites right now? These fossils and dinosaur bones that are found... do they go to one center or museum or do all the state museums share in the wealth?

You say the hidden treasure of Alabama is the gulf coast. Why?

Not sure how many dig sites there may be out there right now, but the scientists have recently figured out that Wetumpka (another Indian name) just north east of Montgomery was probably the site of a big meteor hit in the past. It is right at the last line of mountainous areas before hitting the river valley of Montgomery and going downhill to the beach from here. :) You might google it and see if anything pops up. :)

here are a couple of links:)

As PP posters have stated College Football is a HUGE deal here.

Your daughter is 4?

If she lived in Alabama she would be pledging Alabama or Auburn at this stage in her life lol

That is if her parents, grandparents, aunts or uncles haven't already forced ROLL TIDE or WAR EAGLE onesies on her since birth :thumbsup2

Since you mentioned Native Americans,
the state of Alabama recognizes 4 tribes
Cherokee
Choctaw,
Chickasaw,
Creek

If your parents are from Alabama you more than likely have one of these tribes in your Ancestry.

I doubt this will interest your daughter but there are 10 churches to every liquor store and there are no liquor sales on Sunday except in some of the larger cities.
We even have DRY counties where no liquor is sold.

I am not from Alabama but right next door and visit often. The best thing about Alabama? Gulf Shores and Orange Beach!!!! (JMO, of course)

White sandy beaches, beautiful water, delicious sea food, just absolutely wonderful!!!!

BTW, I cannot believe we have resorted to being snarky on a thread about the information on a state--but whatever.

OP, hope your dd finds lots of interesting information and really gets excited about visiting Alabama. Its a great state. :goodvibes

On our drive to take DS to Space Camp we went by a beautiful, old covered bridge. It was just lovely. It wasn't like it was advertised or anything, maybe just a small sign on the highway? But it seemed very old and really would be a beautiful postcard picture. If someone had a picture of that, might be something her dd would like.

Best BBQ huh? You say that but then the example you give is chicken with white sauce? What is the white sauce? is it gravy or alfredo like? Is Alabama BBQ only chicken or is other meats involved in Alabama BBQ?

Thanks for the info on food. I don't have anything under that category. I love history so my mind definately gears towards how things started, why, what was it like before this, etc...

Like I said earlier, I did not like Alabama barbeque having moved there from Texas. Alabama barbeque that I had was more vinegary with thin sauce, less smoked/slow cooked with a thicker sauce. And it was usually pork instead of beef. But then I moved to Montana where barbeque was hamburgers and hotdogs with bison burgers and antelope thrown in for good measure.

You can also throw in the Civil Rights movement, March to Selma, Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King Jr, etc because all of that was in Alabama, too.

We lived in Montgomery. I was surprised that it was so rolly/hilly having come from flat Houston area.

Nocclula Falls has a cool Native American story you can check out.

Also search Moundville Al archeological park. Interesting mounds and burial sites created by the native Americans.

The story of how Tuscaloosa got its name is an interesting but sad story.

.

LuvsJack, for Heaven's sake, PLEASE stop telling people about how wonderful Orange Brach and Gulf Shores are! It's supposed to be a secret! Shhhh! We need to keep this information to a need-to-know basis only. Do you not realize that our well-kept secret is getting more and more crowded every year?! ;). Don't you know how long the lines are at Lamberts? :rotfl:

OP, ignore what was said about the white sandy beaches, beautiful water, and delicious sea food. Matter of fact, Alabama has no Gulf Coast. Just keep going until you see Destin, Florida...I hear it's lovely.

Hope the project turns out well. While I don't live in Alabama, I have visited often and love it. It holds a special place in my heart and it's people are the absolute best!

:lmao:

oh. . .yeah, yeah, OP, she's right! No gulf coast in Alabama at ALL. Just follow the signs to Destin! ;)

TOO LATE! LOL

But don't worry. I hate the beach, water, sand, etc. I am a mountains girl. DH grew up in San Diego. Boy are we opposites.

According to native son, Charles Barkley, it's a lot like the part of Pennsylvania between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh . . . And remember to get her a banjo for her knee.
