Southwest Carry on bags

My daughter is flying for the first time next month and we drive to Disney so this is all new to me.

My question...I have the carry on luggage information and I know she can have a second bag but I can't seem to find out how big that bag can be. Someone told me it must be able to fit under the seat, but how big can that be? And does that second back include her purse or can that purse fit into that second bag?

Sorry for all the questions and thanks for your help.

This information is on Southwest's website:

http://www.southwest.com/html/customer-service/baggage/carryon-bags-pol.html

They don't give specific measurements, but it has to fit under the seat. Use the size of a standard book backpack as a guide, or something which can be compressed to that size.

A purse is considered a personal item, so you can have a carry on piece of luggage and a purse.

Backpack is a good idea. I carry my purse inside of it as well as some snacks and reading materials.

One thing to note: whatever bag that does not fit under the seat may be required to be gate checked if the luggage compartments are full. This does not happen too often but if you have a "C" boarding pass it is a possibility. Make certain that anything you may need during the flight is in the bag that does fit under the seat.

SW site says: "Personal-type items include purses, briefcases, cameras, food containers, or laptops (case included). Pet carriers are considered either a personal item or a carryon item.
Southwest Airlines limits carryon bag dimensions to 10 x 16 x 24 inches."

No dimensions for the Personal Bag. So, others here HAVE used a standard sized back pack and it's worked out ok? Like the OP, we've never flown, but will be in Sept. I don't want to get to airport and find out that back pack is considered too big. :headache:

My husband and I both use the North Face "Borealis" backpacks regularly when we fly (which we do often), and never have an issue getting them under the seat in front of us, even fully packed. Pretty standard sized backpack, so you could check the dimensions on the website if you need to.

Thanks! :thumbsup2
4 of us have Adidas backpacks which are the same dimensions as the one you spoke of. So I guess we'll be OK using those.

Most airlines don't publish an actual measurement for personal items; I would guess because different plane types have different under seat sizes. However, United is now stating a personal item can measure 9" x 10" x 17." You could use this as a rough guide.

Hmm our Adidas Backpacks have dimensions of: 11 x 19 x 14 inches. (Similar to the North Face backpacks mentioned by a previous poster) I will keep a close eye on the Southwest site to see if they begin to publish a maximum size allowed for the personal bags.
